Re: Tidbits from Print '09

Shaja ·
Neal, thanks for the recap. Count me as one of the naughty no-shows. I've gone almost every year for the last 11 years, registered for this year, and at the last minute wasn't able to get away. I'm always fascinated by the marketing at the shows, and sounds like Kodak had an extremely interesting angle.

I agree with both Neal and Mike, if the administrator feels they're an integral part of the team they wouldn't have contemplated a "Friday end of month" vacation day. Here's where the rewards/prizes from sales contests and extra spiffs come into play. I once gave our order administrator a TV/VCR combo unit I had won. You can order in Friday lunches, bring in bagels and donuts - everyone wants to be appreciated for the job they do especially the lower paid ones. Don't make it a habit BUT...

I agree with Neal being different by just paying attention to the client works. Direct's game plan is to turn everything to a price deal. Peel the onion back and we all uncover a wealth of opportunity to beat direct. It takes time but you have to know where to play and where to back away.

Still hanging around $2.40 here. Right, 'cause you think it's a good idea to support Chavez and Middle Eastern countries by continuing to send them billions of dollars to fund their interests and a bad idea to spend some money on American technology to break our dependence on them.

Re: Political Speeches

JasonR ·
I totally agree with Neal and Chuck! First, as Neal mentioned, the States were initially envisioned with much more power than they are today. The Governor of a state was a more powerful position than senator or even President (except in terms of foreign relations and war). Next, as Chuck said, I really enjoy speaking with people who totally disagree with me. I want to hear your viewpoint, I want to know how you made your decisions. I want to learn about you and how you feel and examine my...

Who said there's nothing wrong with the prisoners? I said the US government said that 80 needed to be released, not that every one of them was some "innocent victim". Officials have mentioned the 30 figure, but they've never been able to say who those people were. The names they have provided haven't been working out so well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_released_Guantanam...y_returned_to_battle

Art, You must know that we all wish nothing but the best for you. It seems at first blush that your situation has dramatically improved for the better. I today's marketplace there is simply no room for those dealerships that want to just get by. If they aren't willing to provide their sales force with the resources they need to compete in today's world then they will go the way of Century. Far too many dealerships are still run by men that sold typewriters to make a living and can't...

Jomama and DScott, I agree that both keeping machines clean and customer knowledgeable is Key, along with performing PM's on schedule. I guess everyone (including me) is a bit hesitant to put a NUMBER to the question of jam frequency that is acceptable. We all have SOME equipment that will "go PM to PM".Let's remove the top 10% of the performers, and remove the bottom 10% of performers, and come up with a jam frequency #! You go first, and I'll give my rule of thumb. I am pretty sure Neal...

These can be all over the place. I dont think you can put a number on it. But if my back was to the wall I would say that a less than 30cpm machine with no connected components whuld not require more than 2 service vists between PMs. I would be on the case if a machine was...

Re: Feature Article for February "BuyerZone.com Friend or Foe"?

"Poking the bear" I realize that most of the users of this site are sales reps who make their living off of commissions. This means what I'm going to say might not go over well, but I don't mean any disrespect. I hope this comes across as what I meant it to be, a "devil's advocate" approach to the issue. I'm not espousing this view as much as trying to explain them. First and foremost, Sales Representatives provide a valuable service for the customer by exploring the needs of a company,...

Thanks for the defense Jim! =) Neal, thanks for your reply, it's what I was looking for =). I do feel that a large part of our industry is going toward the "Walmart" approach (lowest cost gets the deal no matter what) and it makes me sad to see it. I'd guess for now, those wanting consultants will seek them out, those wanting lowest price will get it despite our best efforts.

Re: Konica Minolta and 140lb index

I got the weight information that I quoted above straight out of their spec sheet and Product and Sales Guide; it also was discussed during our sales team's launch training. It bears out with what our service team is seeing. I do not see anything in Konica's materials for this model series about t-shirts. Must say it surprises me that anyone tries to put t-shirt transfer materials through a laser printer or copier anyway, since the transfer material is fused to the t-shirt fabric with an...

I have used FM Audit, Print Audit and @Remote. Neal is right but I think we have spoken about that before. My results have been a bit better with FM Audit than Ricoh's lab testing but I spoke to Mark Pollack (sp?) about the FM Audit test and he told me it consistently missed 60% of the printers on the LAN network. They all have their quirks and they all only give you volumes - not costs. I need good data gathering tools as I do about 12 assessments a month now. I couldn't find anything...

Thanks for the input. I didn't ask them for their records for their expenses in the last year and this is an excellent idea. I think I can get the deal based on the fact that everyone else seems to be proposing 11 x 17 capable laser printers that will put them over $3k and I should be well under this. The COG analysis should be useful. However, since I didn't have a volume to give you this is kind of speculative. I think Neal is right. I need to get a more accurate idea of their volume. I...

And a great two cents it is! At our dealership we needed a way to combat direct branches selling at or around cost to incumbment accounts. None of our accounts would argue about $30-$0 more per month than the competition becuase our service is great. However when the cost difference is $100 per month less our quotes, we can not compete. We have not stopped selling Ricoh, however we are using the Sammy's to keep existing clients where the volume and the need is right. Some will love the unit...

Re: c450 and microsoft publisher

Art Post (Guest) ·
(from Shaja) Neal, I'm assuming the problem is the subset stapling with the mail merge? The C450 doesn't know how to separate each newsletter after the merge creates one big document? If that's the case, two ideas: 1 - PrintShop Mail, which will allow you to break the job after X number of pages for stapling and finishing. PSM requires PostScript, so be sure to use the PS driver and not the PCL driver. This may be the better solution because of how PrintShop Mail handles the ripping of files...
