Good post. I agree that enthusiasm is critical in the area of leadership. I also agree that good management is critical in driving progress...which can ultimately result in transformation. However, we differ in the idea that someone is either an enthusiastic leader or a good manager. The most effective and enduring leaders I have worked with have also had very strong management skills. They were not necessarily the ones in the trenches on a daily basis...but they possessed an understanding...

Re: The A4 Challenge or Opportunity

In my experience A4 machines are as much or even more hassle than an A3 machine to install and train which I do myself for the customer but my income off of the sale of the A4 device is a fraction of what it would have been had I sold an A3. Beyond that most A4 machines lack a document feeder built to handle the page volumes of walk up copying and scanning my customers do. At the end of the day I have to make a living so I spend my time on A3 opportunities.

Without a value statement that goes beyond copiers and even mps at this point --- people will be selling at cost, because they are transient, non-professional, and either don't have or have confidence in their skill set. The Trick is to work with companies that aren't in the market to buy copiers---I guarantee that their are other challenges that they are facing and trying to overcome...When you do this you can sell at retail, because there is no competition and you earned that commission.

Re: IKON steals University of Kentucky MPS contract from Lexmark!

I don't find this story surprising at all. Lexmark is a printer company that lacks a complete competitive product line. Ricoh has a complete product line to fit a major university from production machines down to desktop printers. You can bet this was a very profitable deal for Ricoh. I don't even think low bidder would be an issue regarding Lexmark given how weak they are on any product beyond a desktop printer. Loyalty would be the only thing Lexmark would have going for it in this...

I wasn't really considering the one-and-done deals. However, in this day and age where we have printers and document management as well, even the smaller companies may have additional revenue opportunities in them. But for the most part, I was referring to accounts that have future opportunity beyond just the replacement of the machine you sold 3 years ago.

Not necessarily a good thing. Its just one part of its new "ecosystem" of information and communication technologies that go beyond print. I could see this tech having a similar impact on meetings as GotoMeeting or Webex did when they came out, which I use a lot. Who knows if Ricoh has the tech or vision to make it work. They are just saying they are going to try. I could see this being a good fit for armed services, government, major corporations, and distributed mid-size corps.

Let's look at this from the leasing company perspective. Many of these entities will file for bankruptcy, therefore much of this debt will have to be written off anyway and the losses go far beyond any single community as you well know. I feel like a lot of the historical advantages of being an Agent (lineup range, leads, etc) have been undermined by moves by Global and the Xerox dealer division in recent years. Not a bad business model too if you can do it, don't want to deal with a service division/overhead, and reach Xerox's quotas. You can also combine it with Xerox's dealer programs to go beyond some of the limitations they put on Agents.

Yoda, you need to not be so quick to throw around the "ignorant" and "dumb" labels. Just because something is true in your tiny little world does not mean it is universally true. It is still not in the best interest of the customer (in most cases), which should be our primary concern. That brings me to your next, supposedly obvious, observation. With extreemly aggressive service rates and a duty cycle of 150k per month (and unlike other manufacturers Konica has a history of meeting their spec) this product is going to kick out a great deal of production units, as well as a few creative units. Ricoh just is not a player in color beyond the printer. The 6513 is just the most recent in a series of failures in the mid space. As far as color printers, it is allways the cost per page and flexability that makes these limited.

Our industry is in bad enough shape without such a mandate. I rarely do 60-month terms and when I do its because its what the customer wants or its what they've already had. I would also add that the equipment is having no problem making it to the end of term. If anything, the problem I am facing is the equipment is running so well that the customers take the buyout at the end of the lease and keep the equipment for years beyond the original lease term.
