First is this your actual reply to the account looking at thoseToshiba products listed (455 & 305)? If yes and they have a great history with the Toshiba product, telling them there a "bottom dweller" would make anyone think that you're only wanting to sell them what YOU'RE offering. The models they requested are older models of Toshiba and who knows if they've worked well for them or not. Also if you research the Okidata product, most of their MFP's are based on the Toshiba platform now...

Actually, I did not mention that I am offering any equipment to them. I'm not even sure where they are located, I'm not looking to sell them, All of the recent MFP's that I've seen at the shows have pretty much the same GUI> I do remember something about a more robust partnering with Toshiba/

FYI: Toshiba, overall, is in the top ten for R&D Spend-to-Sales ratios. "Bottom dweller" really is not a fair use of words. With any device manufacturer, product is only as good as its dealer support. Get references if need be. RE: maintenance; The asker is talking B&W devices not color. Regardless, get the maintenance. Fewer spikes in copy quality or hardware issues because you'll make that phone call to fix rather than putting up with poor copy quality, etc. for fear of how much it...

TimB: Thanx for the comment! I believe you with the top ten in R & D for Spend to Sales ratios, but I don't R & D being conducted for copiers not like Canon, Xerox, KonicaMInolta & Xerox. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck then it must be a duck. Toshiba's market share over the last ten years in the US has always been at or near the bottom of the pack, thus they are cellar dwellers, bottom feeders, in the US market. However, the customer was asking which is the best. By rankings in the market place, the top seven do not include Toshiba. What are the best options to getting around an "evergreen" clause in a prospects lease contract? Specifically, if the clause renews the contract for 1 full year & they missed the timeframe to provide written notice to cancel? Is the prospect obligated to make every payment? Is there a way for me to win the business without having to refinance that full year of "evergreen" payments into the new lease? Your input would be appreciated. --Garrett

Hello Garrett - The dreaded "Evergreen" clause. This clause has caused many problems customer and dealers over the years. Depending on your situation, it may be tough for you to get the customer out of the contract early without some significant work on yours and the customers part. Based on your comment of "win the business", I am assuming that you are not the original dealer that put the customer into the lease with the an "Evergreen" renewal clause. If this is the case, there is a good...

Re: Canon Business Systems Pulling a Ricoh

Yes Keith has a branch in our area but we don't run into them that much. Yes we stuck it out with Ricoh for as long as we could. We really took a hard look at the dealer/manufacturer relationship when the ikon merger happened and we saw pricing in our area that was worse than we see now. What broke the camels back was when we asked for support from Ricoh to gain some of the canon accounts that we had engaged and Ricoh told us point blank to walk away from the deals because we would never win...

I whole heartedly agree with what some one said before about selling the value of your company, service and the relationships. I've also told customers point blank I cannot compete with the directs price so if that's all that...

Makes me wonder what may happen. From my talks with muratec, of course I'm not in a high position of being in the know, it sounds like the label presses will become their go to product and eventually the mfp's will be less important to them. I figure the way Samsung treats everyone else in the tech world they would be laughing all the way to the bank with their billion, and then laugh all the way to the bank buying a company with a more whole product portfolio.....look at what they do with apple. Larry High Schools nor College teaches students "how to work your ass off". I'm a firm believer that you can't coach nor teach someone how to work hard. Knowing how to work hard is one of those innate characteristics within people that only comes to fruition when that person has the passion or drive to succeed. I've seen it time and time again, you can't teach someone how to work their ass of. The either want or don't want to. With sales, we understand that in order to win, we need to lose.

Art, Agree 100 % with you. It boils down to will do versus can do. Great coaches are so critical to sales success. Athletes flourish when coaches align with their talent. There is so much to learn from coming in second. As sales reps we can't win every deal but we sure can learn from them. Cam Newton, I do not doubt his ability, desire, determination and quest to win... Very good write up Larry. The statements are 100% right on that coming in second gives you nothing but the next phone call, door knock etc could be a win for you. I do want my sales reps to be pissed off and mad when they lose a deal. It tends to show me they really care. I personally get very upset when I lose a deal and I don't settle for second place. I am a sore loser when it comes to sales and I want my reps to be that way as well. I don't want to hear the BS "well there's always next...

Old Glory/Jason, Exit interviews are a fantastic way to truly engage and understand win/lose situations. So easy to get pissed off and move on, human sales nature. Stop and think about all the other things you leave on the table your dealership can support. A true sales professional wants to know why. This is how you improve. All too often the classic is "lost because of price" no you were outsold! Winning is a great way to find out what you did well so it can be repeated over time.
