Re: Perspectives on Riso
We've had very little success with them in the years we've been a dealer. They run well but they are a hard to move item. Support from the manufacturer was non-existent but they are making a renewed effort now in that regard. Just doesn't seem to be much of a market for a real expensive really really fast machine with marginal image quality. We still do well enough with their duplicators and the supplies for them to stay in the game. I just don't think the Comcolor products are priced right.

Re: The End Of The Day With Ray! Don’t Screw Up Your Defining Moment
I've got shut down customers asking how we can help them because they can't operate. It sucks for us but it sucks way more for them. I have "suspended" an MA for one because they asked" no cost no expense". I was lucky enough to get my PPP loan in on day one, approved and closed. I live to fight another day but I don't think things will change all that much. Americans are not going to change everything because of Covid 19, I may be wrong (wouldn't be the first time) but this is a major...

Re: It’s The End Of The Day With Ray! 2020 Who Will Educate Endusers
HI Ray and Happy New Year! The A4 Revolution will not happen until those A4 manufacturers provide A4 print devices with the A3 cost per page model along with advanced scanning and finishing. You're right that's there's only a small percentage of users that need 11x17. However 11x17 is only part of the picture with end users needs. Larger document feeders, and stapling is still a requirement in many offices. As you know we could debate this until 2021 or longer, but the end game is advanced...

Re: Copier Parts & Accessories China Tariff Starts in 9 Working Days
I am glad to hear that you are working in the copier industry so that I know that you have "skin in the game". There are very many players in the copier/ printer industry each with their own strengths/ weaknesses when faced with a trade war. Each player will have a different tolerance for how much money they want to loose to maintain market share. I definitely would not expect a uniform response. Multi line dealers will have more options to select from than single line dealers and brand...

Re: Are Step Leases ethical business practise?
Disclosure, disclosure, disclosure is the name of the game. I've not run into any step leases (yet) but know they are out there. I make it a policy to go over the T&C's of the simpliest lease agreement with the customer so that they understand full well. Can't tell you how many customers who were sold by former reps had now idea what the terms of their lease. To some it was a big surprise. Honesty and plain language is the best policy.

Re: Emailed request for quote????
This is a very good question Fisher. You are right this is becoming more common as prospects do not want a sales pitch they just want facts & numbers. Then you give them for what they ask. They really don't care about a solution they want the bottom line. Many of those places will give you ONE shot only so you better come in with some good numbers since you will not have a 2nd chance. Otherwise it comes down to a price war then you really lose because the last person they talk with in...

For starters, everyone is happy to say they are happy with their current provider to get you off the phone! Believe nothing of what you hear and half of what you see is something my father always said, doesn't make much sense but he always said it! Selling today is a lot more complicated than years ago. When I started, you would whip out the yellow pages, pick a type of business and just start making cold calls. The pitch was simple something to effect "Hi this is so and so, and I'm calling...

Re: Feedback on Canon C2020/2030 Models
That would not surprise me. The problem is all the major accounts use up the available inventory then when there are 24 units before your order. Then you get in a waiting game which could be a problem for your customer especially when it is needed ASAP.

Re: Comments on the Canon 1730/1740/1750 Models
The Ricohs have been slow sellers is not because of end user needs or wants. Basically ours is a quota/revenue driven business from the top to the bottom. The preferred compensation model for commissions is that of a revenue based plan with commissions. Why have a GP driven comp plan for your sales people when your Dealership or Branch has a revenue based quota plan from the manufacturers? It just doesn't make sense. With that A4's from Canon, Sharp, Ricoh, and KonicaMinolta has presented...

I thinkk Ricoh is really holding back on the SP5200 because of this Canon series. In a GP sales model a sales rep is in heaven selling these two untis. Don't get me wrong regarding revenue but GP based models is where it is at. I havent been impressed with some models from Canon lately, however, I think they have gotten it rigth with...

This is an interesting topic. I'm confused as why copier dealers/mfg think we can manage networks? Why don't we just get a lift and do car repair too? Or while we are at it repair game consoles, watches and diswashers they all have some kind of computer in them. This is a totally different Industry and there is little to no cross synergy. ASK HP!

As I said earlier there is no synergy, you had to completely start from scratch except for maybe billing, the overhead is incredible and let me guess none of them work on MFP's and the sales people don't want to sell it because its a PIA for little return. Next, let me guess, (if its not already) will be a quota on MNS tied to MFP payouts. If you sell $30k MFP's with no MSN Commission rate is X% if you sell some contracts it is...

Re: Ricoh Dealership in Minnesota will buy.......
Independent Dealers will never compete successfully with any Direct _BS branch on price. The _BS Branch has shown that they are willing to run their branches at a loss for years! We must sell at a profit, IMHO they should (Legally) have to also sell at a profit (Don't get me started on dumping). If you work for an independent dealer and you are trying to compete with a _BS Branch (that sells your product) on price then you are playing into their hands, and you are going broke. They can...

Re: NEC Corporation of America Announces Closure of Document Solutions Division (DSD)
One other thing to note is that the OEM business is still important to vendors like Konica and Kyocera. Even after losing Oce and IKON, which hurt, Konica OEM'd its MFPs to Olivetti, Muratec, (NEC), Sindoh, etc. Meanwhile, Kyocera OEM'd through Olivetti, (NEC), etc. A few more exits like this and the manufacturers will have to considering leaving the OEM game, impacting economies of scale, and likely pricing/costs for their own brands.

Re: How do you feel about the industry?
Yes...all this "you have to provide solutions" talk is all fine and good but it's still a numbers game. However, you have to make each call effective by getting information that will help you someday get in the door. What they have (or who they call for service should tell you what they have), whether they own or lease, are they 100% satisfied, and who makes the decisions. Your questions can't come across as an interrogation or you won't get any info from the receptionist. But if you are...

Every evening to put together their next day. Never...never come into the office and not know what you're doing the minute your feet...

Re: Gas Price Check
I agree with the conspiracy theory moreso than the Democrat/Republican theory, because BIG OIL knows that if they can throw enough $$ into the game, then they can do whatever they want, and they will. BIG OIL does not want to build any new refineries here in the US because they would not be able to control their profits the way they are now. Everyone has their hand in each gallon of gas that is bought. State taxes, Federal taxes, Local taxes, Exise taxes, everyone gets a piece of the pie.

They've told you to sell, sell, sell... advertise again and again... push hard... and then get up the next day and do it all over again! Why? Because...

Re: Email from Canon P4P'er "Ricoh Direct Pricing"
It is sad that Ricoh has laid open the market and is allowing the direct reps to compete in current RFG business. The direct operation for Konica Minolta has been put on notice that if they walk into a current KM customer, then they are to turn around and walk out the door. That's from tRick Taylor himself. That doesn't mean if you're a duel line dealer and have non Konica Minolta equipment in there, then it's fair game, but KM is trying to protect its dealer side.

I do believe that classy Independent Dealers can (and do) win against due to providing excellent Service. That is because IKON and RBS fall short in this area. Yet, the game board is now changing, due to Ricoh's strict focus on supporting IKON and RBS at the expense of Dealers (yes with better 'pricing') and economic factors today, more and more business will erode for Independents. Meaning, at the very least, Independents will need to drop their pants and earn far less profit, far less to...

The DF is not going to be as heavy duty as the copier based products, but for many offices this is not an issue unless they do a lot of scanning. The user interface reminds me of the touch screen on the Lexmark MFP printer based products and is extremely simple looking. This will appeal to a lot of purchasing type buyers.
