We've had very little success with them in the years we've been a dealer. They run well but they are a hard to move item. Support from the manufacturer was non-existent but they are making a renewed effort now in that regard. Just doesn't seem to be much of a market for a real expensive really really fast machine with marginal image quality. We still do well enough with their duplicators and the supplies for them to stay in the game. I just don't think the Comcolor products are priced right.

Art, Thanks for comments it's conversation which starts change. There is way more applications for A4 MFPs than those few applications you suggest. The large disruption will be from those who can isolate the realities of the customers needs and sell based on those realities. Declining Marketplaces are disrupted when the old way continues delivering to all the market's customers the same way they did before the decline. The old way needs to focus on the realities of over 80% of the market...

All excellent points. My son (35) asked me the other day about Carvana and my thoughts about them. The first thing that came to mind is warranty, and service. I guess the question becomes (at least for me), what will be the relationship with the dealer for service and warranty when you bought the car from Carvana? Why should the local dealer expedite service, parts or put you at the top of the list for support when you did not buy from them?

I think more and more companies, our industry and others are separating the service department from the sales dept so much that each will be required to stand alone if necessary. We are still a dealer but we have not sold a LEXMARK in quite a while. They eliminated the MPS Elite program we were own, or at the least removed us from that program. I never had anyone ask about the security due to the Chinese ownership but it’s a great point. Honestly, I have found their support, to us at least, to be very subpar. Our support from brother has been phenomenal the last 2 years. Most of my printer clients are replacing the lexmarks with the brothers as fast as they can.

Is it just me, it seems that the general rule of thumb for the copier industry to end users is "the take or leave approach". Meaning, come hell or high water we're not going to change the way we bill, the way we support, or the financial solutions that we offer. We charge on an hourly basis for any connectivity support beyond the first 6 months of a system being installed. We have tested a program where clients can have it included in their contract but have received little interest in that.

Art, We charge an hourly rate for onsite, 1/2 that rate for remote support. We offer it as part of the Service Contract, as well as a separate block time (5, 10, or 20 Hours). Vince

We charge for IT support, we sell it in block time agreements. For hardware, we'll take care of anything that is related to the mfp device, if we find that the fix was not related to an issue with the mfp device, we will charge time and material for the fix.

This may be true of a commodity (like envelopes, or coffee, or even a PC) but copiers, really MFDs require a lot of attention, both before and after a customer buys it. I suspect that you are retired from the copier industry and do not have to earn commissions each month to support your family. As an active sales rep, I do not have the luxury of hoping that things will run their course when I have budgets and quotas to meet each month. The people who are going to be adversely effected will be US copier sales reps with a higher cost of goods.

My KM rep and his boss were in the office yesterday and I asked him why he didn't show any interest in this opportunity and he said because you are buying at the lowest I can give you right now and there is nothing else I can do from a support part. He said he gave it about a 3-5% chance of winning the account based on what he read and what he could do. So some clarification first. PaperCut absolutely does support Mac. In fact, it is the only cost recovery/print control solution that I know of that actually installs in an all Mac environment. (Server and Client) It also is the only solution I know of that installs in a Linux environment. So both of your issues are solved with PaperCut. I included the install guides for Mac and Linux to get you started.

Got it figured out. In talking with Ricoh tech support they had me downgrade the Java software to work with PD5. When I loaded PCS (PD6) it did not track scan's and I had forgotten to put the newest Java back on the card. Did that this morning and all is well.

they are typically user customized in the application. For example a law firm printing to an HP 4000, when they print a letter it's always in dup or triplicatel; right? So the program is set up when they select to print, a letter that they get: 1. a print on letterhead 2. a print on plain paper 3. a print on colored paper 4. an evnelope. I always run into this when replacing printers, because it never is configured to do the same thing, and i have like 30 legal secretaries wanting to kill...

They are using Timberline, a canned accounting package, so there's no functionality within the application to do this currently. You do have a really good question there though... what were they doing before?

Jason R: No, i never created this app for any of my customers.....I do not know if they app Art is working with has Macro Support, it was just something from my memory bank. I am not possible if that is a MS Office feature only, but am pretty sure that these types of things can be built in other apps as well

I have good relatioship === but employer is a little big... I am positive that equipment is dirt cheap, lease rates are bumped, but just like any other company, overhead to run a company has to be built in somewhere...Business's are in business to make money.....Even Non PRofits..... Interesting approach to the sales process. Strikes me the next promo is for 10% below sticker price...of course unlike cars, manufacturers don't put a sticker price on MFP's to advise the public what the price is supposed to be. At this point we find the margin we are able to obtain on most sales of hardware barely covers the cost of sales for the product...any business profits come from services bundled around the hardware, either connectivity plans, support plans, supplies for colour etc.

So far it looks like Xerox has a well developed direct-to-enterprise MPS program through Xerox Global Services (XGS). Good suggestion but expensive for a 20 copier install. ShareScan is a hardware add on level of technology to support and maintain that I was hoping to avoid. I was looking at eCopy Paperworks but this law firm has approx. 500 PCs. At around $180.00 per workstation this gets very expensive. Plus I am unsure if the law firm would move away from Adobe PDF. In the end, for me, for this quote, eCopy Share Scan is likely the best solution. It gives me a single solution for the required features of...

The eCopy Solution is not exactly cheap. With ShareScan, all of the Connectors and 5 year M&S on 20 copiers located in six cities, the extra cost is approx. $200k. I need 14x Black 65 cpm and 6x Colour 65 cpm at approx. $200k. I can pitch the $400k but I do not have six independent dealers with any techncial support familiarity with eCopy Share Scan.

In he end my RFQ deadline was Dec 30, I decided Good Lad gave me the best advise and I pitched eCopy ShareScan. There were so many technologies going on in this quote that eCopy was the only solution that brought it all under one vendor besides my copiers. To paraphrase, "keep it simpler,stupid." I have run into a similar situation like this where we did not have full functionality after installing the driver on a server and pushing it out to the clients. It is usually a problem when you are working with an ERP type program as you mention. The only way you can fix it is to have some type of script written to that program or load the driver on the workstations. We loaded it on the workstation but only had to do it on about 15. Hey all. I am one of the support reps from Ricoh for PPDM. The product is FABULOUS. The roll out has just started in the field, really, and we are learning the product. The only real problem we have been having is with the server. Those have been IIS issues, not PPDM issues. Also, watch for firewall conflicts. The product allows for BATES stamps, scan to almost anything, and 99% OCR. Once it is up, it appears highly stable. If it crashes, removal can be tricky, but we have a fix for that.

I've uploaded the doc file. Also, tech support did provide some very detailed information to me via email that I just reviewed. The main difference is that they are scanning via IP which doesn't account for the possibility of the IP Address changing.
