We've had very little success with them in the years we've been a dealer. They run well but they are a hard to move item. Support from the manufacturer was non-existent but they are making a renewed effort now in that regard. Just doesn't seem to be much of a market for a real expensive really really fast machine with marginal image quality. We still do well enough with their duplicators and the supplies for them to stay in the game. I just don't think the Comcolor products are priced right.

Jason, Wow, that KM C6500 is ancient. It's all about the media. Does the customer run (or need to run) coated or heavier stocks? The C75XX series may suffice. However, it tops out at 256gsm and crawls when coated stocks are throughput. The C750 offers you superior quality, registration and efficiency (at a higher cost). Also, the C750 offers a more powerful front-end option, additional finishing options etc...

Top three points I make when against Kyocera. #1. Take them color samples from your device and any Kyocera because the color output is sub par on all units. If you don’t have access to one look in your crm for an account you co-exist with Kyocera in. Or the next time you have a knock out make some samples and keep them in a binder. If color quality is important to the customer it will be a win. Another point is showing them you get what you pay for, meaning 3 tier color is what they have...

We definitely are not out chasing them but we are much more versed talking about them and the benefits of buying them from us rather than the big box store. It has led to some very nice MPS accounts for us this past year. I don’t have a final count but I believe we added about 3 million new clicks this year from printer sales. Aside from RISO's SF5130, all of their duplicators now come standard with a network card for network printing. However, printing from MAC OS requires ordering a Mac Driver which requires a license key ordered from RISO - doesn't cost anything to order. Also, RISO's Mac Drivers are always behind with current Mac OS versions. They haven't released a driver compatible with OS X 10.15 even though it's been about 6 months since 10.15 was released. Sorry I'm late to the party.

Across the board, I probably average 12-15% margin above whatever markup management puts in before my "Sales Cost" is published. For printers & desktop A4 devices, I just want to get a bunch of them in the field running pages & making money, so I sell most of them at my Sales Cost. That recurring revenue stream & volume in numbers is more valuable than making a few extra dollars on the hardware. The whore'ing of the machines is getting worse and worse. Eventually the stupid Japanese presidents of the brands are going to be sitting around in a room somewhere trying to figure out why this industry went to sh*t and what do they do to fix it. I know everyone is just ball-parking it here but these questions are really hard to get dependable answers for. Most sales reps do not know what the dealership markup is prior to establishing sales cost so a 20% markup might actually be 40% from cost. The other is the compensation package. If there is compensation based on clicks or a click incentive, GP becomes less important. My payplan changed this year from being GP based to being revenue based. Consequently, I just sold a 22 unit deal...

Ricoh hasn't even made us aware that those systems can do that.... I don't ever hear of anyone talking about the tiered rate. I wonder if, for once, everyone is on the same page and wants to keep it at a full page of color cost regardless. I hope it stays that way.

JS, I am doing this for many accounts. The value prop for the customer is the ability to browse to folder from the MFP. I mention none of the other features unless asked. We install to the customers server, I build in 3 hours of pro services and then bundle the entire cost in the system. My selling advantage is that with my system you can browse to folder from the MFP easily. Art

The Epson thing is a joke. You can buy it on-line for less than you can buy it from Ricoh and so can your customer. I've got a customer right now who is at end of term on a 48 month lease on a LW426 and I have no choice but to go back to them with the exact same machine......oh and my cost is now higher for that same machine thanks to Plotworks (which gets thrown in the garbage). Would love to have KIP now.

nice, I guess you can make a pretty good argument for color when there is a decent amount of color plotting that is produced, right? What is the estimated cost per square foot for color?

We are getting $.03 per sq ft. That is less than the monochrome machines, this is why I don't see us placing anymore new monochrome machines. We will place some refurbished ones to the customers that have to go low budget. Not only that it blows the Oce Colorwave away. We have a customer who makes these 20 ft full color GIS aerials that cost him $21.00 each to run on the Oce (his numbers not ours) we ran them on the KIP at a cost of $1.76.

In my opinion, what the dealer was funded is not material. That is between the dealership and the leasing company. If it truly is insurance to cover just the device you either insure for the amount necessary to cover the debt should something happen which would be sum of payments plus the residual value or insurance to cover the replacement cost. However, most office equipment is covered under a blanket policy covering all building contents.

There is an all inclusive cpc charge for the Erasable Blue toner. The cost per copy analysis suggests that if on a 60 month lease you do not expect the the customer to erase more than 210,000 pages (3,500 pages per month) you can forget the parts cost and charge the same cpc as for Black at around $0.010 per page with a decent profit. Yes I have sold a couple of these. For the price these are fantastic. My service manager is impressed which is hard to do. Dual side scanning is a definite selling point. The cost per page is going to be higher of course. I would say in the .015 black and white and .11 color to be safe (depending on your market of course). Not as good as say the 6535 per say but the machine is less than half the cost. If the run more than a couple thousand a month I would move them up to the 6535cidn. Let me...

So some clarification first. PaperCut absolutely does support Mac. In fact, it is the only cost recovery/print control solution that I know of that actually installs in an all Mac environment. (Server and Client) It also is the only solution I know of that installs in a Linux environment. So both of your issues are solved with PaperCut. I included the install guides for Mac and Linux to get you started.

So, the Oki or Teriostar 1040 is one page per minute faster than the Ricoh. Oki wants the user to replace the corona wire cartridge and the process cartridge. I believe the process cartridge is the drum. Now, the memories come back, if an end user scratches that drum, it's on the user to replace the drum which is going to be a very pricey item. In about 5 placements, I've been able to take customers from existing A4 color devices and put them into one of these models for not much more than what they were paying, the high cost of A4 color consumables was the key when the user was making about 1,000 color pages per month along with 1,500 or more black. The low price cpc is an advantage with the Ricoh models. I have used a few of these systems as seed models, meaning that they take the color unit and commit to the lowest possible...

I can't think of any way to duplicate a page (that's not just a driver/print setting/printstream issue, that's wholesale re-creation of a page) without getting a package that will do much much more (and cost more than you want to pay). How about setting up two printers with different default settings and having them print twice? If they aren't willing to pay, they either need to be willing to take extra steps or relinquish this request.

Hrmm, well, sure they are. Notice it doesn't say anything about Service or Supplies, we can assume those are either at their normal rate or slightly elevated. It doesn't say anything about lowering the lease rate on this MFD you are buying at "cost" either, so we can assume those are also either at normal or slightly elevated. If we also assume that their sales will increase by X amount due to the promotion, the only loss they could expect from this is if X amount of additional revenue...

Without a value statement that goes beyond copiers and even mps at this point --- people will be selling at cost, because they are transient, non-professional, and either don't have or have confidence in their skill set. The Trick is to work with companies that aren't in the market to buy copiers---I guarantee that their are other challenges that they are facing and trying to overcome...When you do this you can sell at retail, because there is no competition and you earned that commission.

There were many questions I had, but the real question is define cost? Does cost includes overhead , sales commissions, taxes,dealer salaries,gas, lights, heat. You know all the expenses that's goes into running a company. That is cost. Not want the dealer accuracy pay for the equipment.

Interesting approach to the sales process. Strikes me the next promo is for 10% below sticker price...of course unlike cars, manufacturers don't put a sticker price on MFP's to advise the public what the price is supposed to be. At this point we find the margin we are able to obtain on most sales of hardware barely covers the cost of sales for the product...any business profits come from services bundled around the hardware, either connectivity plans, support plans, supplies for colour etc.

Let the leasing company bill it and that way the customer has an "audit-proof" deduction that can never be challenged by taxing authorities. Like business insurance and taxes on earned income, it is what it is, a cost of doing business that everyone HAS to pay. If another company says its included, force them to divulge the amount (often difficult)IN WRITING - yours will be on each bill.

Haha, Thanks Shaja....I did some lurking on PrintPlant too Looks like the keys are quality output, reliability, and availability of service techs. Big advantages of the copier-makers' presses are price, size, and operator payroll cost savings. overall though it looks like the copier makers' presses are not replacing the indigos and iGens of the world. More like they are replacing lower-end light production systems.

Thanks Montecore, That makes sense from a business standpoint. I'm still having a hard time with the math though. If you are trying to figure out the effective purchase price, but only know the monthly lease payment, # months, and lease rate - do you have any ways to figure out the purchase price? 0.0302 percent of $6,200 is $198 so that only adds up to $6,339. But if you subtract $6,537 by $6,339 then you get $198 again. Suggesting that the purchase price is roughly 2 times the total lease...

The eCopy Solution is not exactly cheap. With ShareScan, all of the Connectors and 5 year M&S on 20 copiers located in six cities, the extra cost is approx. $200k. I need 14x Black 65 cpm and 6x Colour 65 cpm at approx. $200k. I can pitch the $400k but I do not have six independent dealers with any techncial support familiarity with eCopy Share Scan.

With Riso making a push in offering Print-to-Mail solutions, perhaps it would make sense for Pitney Bowes or Neopost/Hasler to acquire them. Pitney hasn't come up for air since they acquired Print, Inc. several years ago in order to gain valuable service & supply contracts with no obligation to sell hardware. Acquiring Riso could be the same type of acquisition, & I believe the Riso platform is the type of low-cost, high-speed solution that could complement PB's automated mailing...

It would seem that it all depends on where you structure your profitability. Since Ricoh is a Japanese manufacturer and sells its product to the US Ricoh company and then US Ricoh sells it to a dealer or direct, the profits can be structured to be very little if any in the US and very profitable in Japan. Ex: cost to manufacture is 10, sell to US mfg. sales concern for 20, US concern sells it for 22, dealers or direct sell it for 24. The cost of goods to the US is high and the profits remain...

Something to think about as well, adding to what was mentioned by Mega. The Japanese division is making the bulk of their profits on the manufacturing of toner. That is the money tree for them. They sell to Ricoh USA and they work through their channels to distribute the boxes. I have a handful of these small accounts that bill between $500 & $1,000 but those are the ones where the cost-justification is more difficult, since I.T. doesn't spend much time troubleshooting such a small fleet. In these cases, it typically comes down to managing the fleet for a little more than they currently pay just for consumables.

On all current Toshiba copiers with HDD, 128 Bit AES Encryption is offered standard but it has to be turned on by a Service Code. The cost is that it somewhat slows down the copier's performance. In my experience, 128 Bit is rarely turned on when I inform the customer of the trade off. Maybe I should just turn it on in the future and not tell the customer. The optional DataOverwrite kit is very rarely purchased by small Commerical customers but often by Gov't & Schools.

Are we on the same wave length here?? Usually a 3-5 means that service and supplies are provided for three years, after three years the customer then has to pay for service, thus raising the cost to them. ie: $100 per month for 60 months includes 3 years of supplies and service for 100K, after the third year or whenever the supplies and service expire, the rep will come back in and refi the remaining 24 months with a new 3-5, they can usually sell this at a lower price that what the customer...

In Nova Scotia, Canada we are no longer allowed to dispose of copiers by taking them to the landfill. We must pay a local moving company $30.00 per hour (or send our tech to their premises) to disassemble the copier into it glass, metal, plastic & electronic components. These components are then placed in different bins for recycling. It can take approx two hours. I tell customers that technically, it is THEIR lease and they are responsible for the return. However, that the unwritten rule is the person who secures the business should return it for the customer. If you know a machine like that exists, add the cost to your quote and make sure that it is known that you will return the machine for them.
