Re: Hiring Sales Reps - what are you hearing
Surprising there are no replies yet. I would figure this to be a "hot" topic. We recently found one in the age demographic that will work out. He has more than a 45 minute ride, has closed a few orders already. Maybe you need to show them $500 at the interview and ask how they would like to get that $500, by working a week or trying to talk you out of it. After reading your thread it seems that neither of those "salespeople" have the "desire" to compete, yet alone the determination to "win".

No, Art. You're spot on. I haven't had many jobs outside the industry, but the majority of the old guard is so proud of the way they've always done it & receives so much validation from other dealers with the same mentality (via BTA, CDA, SDG, et al) that they often refuse to admit the need to change until it's practically too late. There are ideas & concepts that I brought up 3-5 years ago that were considered to be "interesting but not really necessary" that we're suddenly latching...

Re: Ricoh & Epson = "perfect together" NOT!
I do find the Ricoh's to be very reliable. What they need is speed though, IMO. Have worked with a steel maker on some projects and he has 4 big Oce's that run all day long, 5 days a week. He loved the 3406 but said he would have to buy about 8 or 10 of them do the same work the 4 high speed Oce's run. He wouldn't bite on the 7140's either.

Re: A Few Copier Vignettes from the Late Eighties & Nineties
Art, You and I are from similar professional backgrounds and times. We started in 1980 selling Sharp and Juki typewriters. Everything sold near MSRP. Then the fax boom came and we caught that wave perfectly. We sold Ricoh thermal faxes for full list ($2995.00). The only issue was cash flow; we sold them faster than we could order and purchase them. Copier Maintenance agreements went from .022 up to .035 and did not include drums, developer, toner, fuser rollers or lamps! Also, like your...

Re: Copier Parts & Accessories China Tariff Starts in 9 Working Days
I read past the "bill" description too fast. A bill is not law, it is, I think, just an expression of unanimous opinion by the Senate. Somewhere in the news this week, I read that Kyocera intends to increase production of A3 copiers in China by expanding a current factory. I am sure all copier manufacturers plan 10+ years into the foreseeable future and cannot worry about politicians who could come and go every four years.

Re: UPDATE 3-Canon buys Dutch Oce for $1.1 bln, fights Ricoh
Found this on the web today:: By Pavel Alpeyev Nov. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Orbis Funds, the asset manager that opposed takeover offers by Warren Buffett and Citigroup Inc., rejected Canon Inc.’s 730 million euro ($1.1 billion) bid to buy unprofitable Dutch printer maker Oce NV as too low. Canon’s 8.60 euros-a-share offer “significantly undervalues” Oce’s assets, and Orbis doesn’t want to sell its stake of about 10 percent at that price, the Bermuda-based manager of $20 billion in assets said in a...

William Mitting, printweek.com, 23 November 2009 Shares in press manufacturer Océ are trading at a slight premium to the 8.60 euro a share offer from Canon, indicating the market anticipates Canon may be forced to raise its bid. Last week, Orbis, a 10% shareholder in Océ said that it believed the bid "significantly undervalued" Océ, despite a general impression that the bid was a strong one in order to deter a counter bid from Konica Minolta. Re: Does your Copier Service Contract still reflect 1970's Analog Copiers?
Over my 15 years as a Sales Manager to 23+ independent dealers, I have seen many situations where dealers simply has far too simplistic service contracts that had not been updated ever. They mostly involve billable Pro Services, unstable Power Supply, two competitive vendors trying to flip each other's Service Contracts and Fuel Surcharges. (I have a large geographic territory with lots of driving.) I once sold two connected copiers to a law firm. They decided to upgrade from Novell 5.0 to...

Our demo room is probably the envy of every dealership around- its like a new macintosh, unashamedly modern in appearance but your not afraid to play with it.. compared to other showrooms that are more like an apple II - all the current products (except seg 1) and all of the software we'd sell is ready to go.

Re: Does any National Copier Vendor still have their own in house leasing service?
In Canada, I have the strong impression that GE is trying to get out of the "small ticket" copier leasing business. Just last month, we did a Balance of Payments on a GE lease with a differnet leasing vendor (MCAP). Once we were funded, we gave the customer a cheque. The customer promptly paid GE. GE came back this week asking for a $400.00 Premium fee for early contract cancellation. The customer refuses to pay it. As this fee was not documented anywhere that we can find in the original...

Mid Sized Dealer. Sad but true, we eat it the majority of the time. We give it away. I personally spend about 5 hours a week on the phone doing IT tech support or on web-ex webbed into customer's PCs fixing IT issues instead of selling equipment. Its frustrating but we've never found the right place to draw the line between being the nice guy and when to charge the customer without upsetting them.
