I guess I will add some. Our dealership has not furloughed anyone at this point in time. Of course all sales and admin are working remote. We've had a few orders trickling in and my hat goes off to those that have been able to secure those orders.

Re: Gas Price Check

JasonR ·
The Theory in general is that the large U.S. Companies sacrifice their profits (which can be determined by looking at the price of a barrel of crude vs. the price of a gallon of gas) around elections when they are wanting the existing party to stay in power. The price of crude may also fall some, but the amount that the price of gas at the pump drops is significantly higher than can be attributed to the slight decline in crude. As far as it being "near the election" I'd say it is very near...

First is this your actual reply to the account looking at thoseToshiba products listed (455 & 305)? If yes and they have a great history with the Toshiba product, telling them there a "bottom dweller" would make anyone think that you're only wanting to sell them what YOU'RE offering. The models they requested are older models of Toshiba and who knows if they've worked well for them or not. Also if you research the Okidata product, most of their MFP's are based on the Toshiba platform now...

Actually, I did not mention that I am offering any equipment to them. I'm not even sure where they are located, I'm not looking to sell them, All of the recent MFP's that I've seen at the shows have pretty much the same GUI> I do remember something about a more robust partnering with Toshiba/

FYI: Toshiba, overall, is in the top ten for R&D Spend-to-Sales ratios. "Bottom dweller" really is not a fair use of words. With any device manufacturer, product is only as good as its dealer support. Get references if need be. RE: maintenance; The asker is talking B&W devices not color. Regardless, get the maintenance. Fewer spikes in copy quality or hardware issues because you'll make that phone call to fix rather than putting up with poor copy quality, etc. for fear of how much it...

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck then it must be a duck. Toshiba's market share over the last ten years in the US has always been at or near the bottom of the pack, thus they are cellar dwellers, bottom feeders, in the US market. Stories like this burn my britches too. I think of all the times our tech support has stepped to the plate when I, wearing my sales hat, painted myself into a tech corner. The contribution value of competent and reliable tech support can not be over-emphasized and never taken for granted. Too many sales reps rely on tech support to close a deal for them, and simply walk away. Not only is it unethical, it is just plain dumb to alienate technical support. Thank you for sharing this story,...

Ricoh MFPs use 2 bit depth technology with 4 shades per color, vs. Konica's 8 bit depth with 256 shades per color. The Konica color engine (which came from the Minolta side, noted for their color technology) handles color better because it is built to. (What I see when I look at print samples of the same photo: the Konica color looks crisper and more "full bodied"; the Ricoh color looks blotchier and pixelated.) If you have a exacting graphics or marketing client, you can't just skate by.

I think those rates are low based on what we sell our contracts at but I know everyone is in a different market. The extremely low rates don't seem to get thrown around our city as often as others. We keep most everyone around .013-.017 for b/w and .08 or higher for color.

Hey Greg, Absolutely. My only rebuttal is that the word content is so subjective. Do you write lengthy, 1000+ word articles, or do you focus on writing shorter articles you can post 2-3 times per day? For SEO purposes, either can boost your ranking in Google. The golden rule of SEO is that Google rewards good, original content. Black hat SEO will boost your rankings in the short term, but eventually Google's algorithms will catch on and punish your ranking. On the flip side of content,...

Re: Is the time right for MFP Manufacturers to only offer...

Not just color. We could see a big consolidation of speed bands too. If certain manufacturers can make low cost 40 and 50ppm engines that retail for under $4,000 do we really need to have 25ppm engines that retail for over $5,000?

Re: Is the time right for MFP Manufacturers to only offer...

txeagle24 ·
If they offer them for the price of black & white units, yes. If they try to have the same price point as current color systems, they would lose out on price to any manufacturers that continue to make b/w only systems. Additionally, they would have to have a multi-tier billing system for color so as to not scare off people that have intentionally stayed away from color. The industry billing systems (e-Automate, OMD) would need to make that easy to manage & bill as well.

Re: Is the time right for MFP Manufacturers to only offer...

Agreed that the cost of color would have to be the same as the current black systems. I for one would like to only offer color, I think it would be better for the industry. I also believe that the color machines don't cost that much more to make the black systems. I'd bet that the margins are the 20-25-30 ppm nlack systems are huge from the manufacturing side.

The question I asked the most is where they were from, after getting a response I would then ask if they have a plotter or ask if they've ever seen a white board before. I would prefer that the software -- ANY third-party title-- NOT be bundled with the hardware. My sales reps would prefer to be able to configure the software proposal the way the client needs it instead of having to offer it a certain way because it comes preconfigured that way. And speaking with my Purchasing manager hat on, too many preconfigured options is needlessly confusing (the CL7000/CL7100, for a prime example).

Re: Color Cost Per Page for 2 Cents, Are You Crazy?

JC ·
Sorry, Art, this will not happen. If you spread the cost by charging more for black and white, some would buy it and only run color. It's already expensive to run black only on a color device, costing 2 to 3 times or more than on a monochrome Production machine. And even at a penny for service and supplies, monochrome margins are low on color production units.
