The 501/601 are based on a Kyocera MFP without a stapler, so Ricoh didn't have much of a choice on that one. Agreed that its a disadvantage against other A4s, so with Ricoh you will either have to sell the C401 with a finisher or an A3 MFP for the foreseeable future.

In a way its already gone to the internet and away from the outside sales rep........at least for stand alone printers and A4 devices. If all someone needs is a printer or an A4 to be used for basic printing,scanning and copying.....face it, they really don't need us already. If you've been at this a long time you probably remember the days when you sold a lot of A4 machines to small offices. 20 years ago if you needed an A4 you called a copier dealer. Those days are gone for the most part.

John, The PrintCopy Tool compares pretty favorably to Plotworks. I attached two documents to this post. The Product Support Guide lists differences between the two products. The PowerPoint has screen shots of all the settings in PrintCopy Tool. I hope this helps.

In addition to Ricoh, HP, Kyocera, and Xerox all offer a few A3 SFPs that are in the 50-60ppm range.

Czech, I got nothing for you, well, may have something. Every opportunity is different, all depends on the time of the month, we're I'm at with revenue for the quarter or the month, if I can hold MSRP with a certain account. I taken the position (Commercial), that all my A4 devices will be priced at MSRP. A3 devices 21-40ppm would be 1,500 to 2,500, and 3,500 or more on everything else. Just a guide line that I try and follow. I'm not in the Major account business, maybe some other P4P'ers...

Across the board, I probably average 12-15% margin above whatever markup management puts in before my "Sales Cost" is published. For printers & desktop A4 devices, I just want to get a bunch of them in the field running pages & making money, so I sell most of them at my Sales Cost. That recurring revenue stream & volume in numbers is more valuable than making a few extra dollars on the hardware. On larger A4 MFPs, I'll typically have a 20-25% margin, because I typically propose...

In about 5 placements, I've been able to take customers from existing A4 color devices and put them into one of these models for not much more than what they were paying, the high cost of A4 color consumables was the key when the user was making about 1,000 color pages per month along with 1,500 or more black. The low price cpc is an advantage with the Ricoh models. I have used a few of these systems as seed models, meaning that they take the color unit and commit to the lowest possible...

I havn't seen one placement of the frontier in my territory yet. But that doesn't mean they aren't out there. I see the whole copier industry making a shift to A$ devices in the next 24 months or less, they have too. Price is the driving factor, I've heard it all about A4's, such as "A4's can't hold up to heavy volume", oh yea then why do I see laser printers with hundreds of thousands of prints on them and they weigh under 100lbs? Heck, I just came from an account that has 180K on a Ricoh...

I'm with Art. I think the A4 systems are in the market to stay and soon everyone will have them. Samsung will also have A3 systems within the next 18 months to be able to offer them with the A4's on bids and tenders. We shouldn't forget old HP when we have this discussion...they still collect more clicks in NA than any other manufacturer and they are seriously getting into the managed print business. It seems to me it is going to come down to who is going to gaurantee the client the toner on...

I think this is the big change over the last 15-20 years. If you think back, there was a time that you could buy an "off-brand" (not Xerox, Canon or Ricoh) and be really disappointed. They just wouldn't do the job. That's not true anymore, at least for level of machine 90% of office users need. Sure, we may beat the other players on some specific uncommon features, but if they just need a MFP to copy/scan/print, you'd be hard pressed to find one that couldn't accomplish that.

Interesting approach to the sales process. Strikes me the next promo is for 10% below sticker price...of course unlike cars, manufacturers don't put a sticker price on MFP's to advise the public what the price is supposed to be. At this point we find the margin we are able to obtain on most sales of hardware barely covers the cost of sales for the product...any business profits come from services bundled around the hardware, either connectivity plans, support plans, supplies for colour etc.

Did Panasonic make their A3 MFPs for anyone else? Were they ever sold under a non-Panasonic label? The color units have a "Fuji" look to them and earlier A3 color units were also sold as Xerox WorkCenters and were from Fuji.

This leads me to ask if there is any brand out there that is really good with printing onto glossy paper? I mean a fuser is a fuser no matter who makes it I thought, but maybe a certain brand fuser has some kind of advantage? And taking it further, why? Is there a different substance being used in the materials, ie: pressure or hot roller or maybe the toner adheres to the paper better with some brands, and if so what is in the toner that does that? Simply handing over a copier's HDD removes the OS within the copier making it unuseable. Plus there is some labour to remove the HDD and reload the firmware onto it. At least $200 - $300.00 total vs turning on 128 Bit AES Encryption at the start - Free. Going forward, we format the HDD on all of our own brand copiers we remove. For competitors brands, where we do not know the Service Codes, we can only inform the customer of the risks.

Not much here in Jersey, not many dealers left, however with direct now getting into A4, I'm sure we'll see many more. I'm a little concerned that there's been NO A4 Mono except for Sammy, there is a need but Direct seems to be only launching color A4.

There is no specific volume which will become infliction point of cannabalisation...it we be based on the Vendors' being able to educate the customers. Most(over95%) of the current print/copy volumes is only A4, hence there is a strong point in A4 eating into A3 market. It is propelled by serious ATL work done by companies like HP. Colour quality and reliability has improved a lot over the last few years, so even a one generation old colour copier is very much in demand. I'm looking at a break point of around 10k/month, at that point, at least at my dealership, a3 is a lower tco. They [the samsung rep]say when you look at total volumes, 11x17 only accounts for like 3% of the global print volume. What I've seen is that its not accurate to extrapolate that only 3% of customers need it, it means that there is a wider group of customers that use it outside AEC, but they do a tiny amount of it. The most important question to ask is "how much do you copy 11x17"? If the answer is none, then the next question is "how often do you print 11x17"? When the answer is quite often, well A3 is then a no brainer, however if the answer is rarely, then I'll bundle an 11x17 laser or ink printer. Based on under 10K per month, A4 will save the customer on the TCO over the term of a 5 year lease.

Ricoh and Canon both say they are number 1 in the US and they are both right depending on how you are counting. Canon includes its desktop MFPs that sell in retail and Ricoh includes all MFPs priced above $1,000. Both include products that sell through any channel, but Canon has far more retail products that skew sales share in its favor. By Ricoh's math, it is number 1 with a 23.1 US share, followed by Canon. Ricoh also stated that it had the #1 color mfp share in 2009 (7 straight years)...

OK - this is starting to smell like corporate finger pointing. If Ratio.de is closed, who is operating the US office (financially)? And who is providing plotbase PM? (Still available) There seems to be a cloud of secrecy around this mess. It's as if Ricoh's not satisfied with pricing themselves out of wide format. Now they have to prove what corporate moron clowns they are by playing 3 card monty with a key component. BTW, Graphic Enterprises says they can still order the plotbase controller...

When you say you take a copier to a customer for a demo... Is it a Conditonal Sale? I will do this but only on the terms of if the MFP works as described you agree to buy/ lease that same unit without any further demos. I have seen too many potential customers do the Vendor merry go round with six copier vendors to get free copiers for several months. I have seen too many RFQs where a customer has to get three quotes and you are unexpected lowest bid. They ask you in for demo but never...

A couple of thoughts based on my lengthy experience with both Sharp and Ricoh. Ricoh is far and away a better product. No doubt about it. As stated above buyers buy the dealership and the relationship with the sales rep in my experience not the brand name on the front of the box. Take it from someone who spent years explaining to customers who "Gestetner" was that had never heard of them........and now "Lanier". Yes, I agree, we only picked up the Sammies for monochrome no color, we've stuck with Ricoh for that. I just hoping Ricoh doesn't screw it up with higher cpp than the A3 color machines.....something is telling me that the A4 color will be higher, however I hope I'm wrong. If A4 color price is higher than A3 color, that leaves the door open for someone to develop a color A4 with A3 cpp pricing.
