Re: UPDATE 3-Canon buys Dutch Oce for $1.1 bln, fights Ricoh

Art Post (Guest) ·
Tokyoamsterdam: Japan's Canon plans to buy Dutch copier and printer maker Oce for 730 million euros ($1.09 billion) as it tries to return to growth after the global downturn and fight rival Ricoh. Copier and digital camera maker Canon and Oce said in a joint statement on Monday that Canon intends to offer 8.60 euros per share, or 730 million euros, for Oce's outstanding shares. Canon's offer follows little over a year after Japan's Ricoh, the world''s largest copier maker, bought US office...

Very good points Art. The only print production (as some would call it) would be 85, 95, 110ppm. But these are more large departmental units. Mostly it is the 85ppm that is being pushed. There are only a few major players when you get higher than that. The very low end has always been a issue for them. The only item would be the AR-208 unit but that little Ricoh desktop will blow that away. Then there is the issue that some of these low end units can only be purchased from a distributor that...

They could be going to more of a master distributor type of model. It is way less expensive for them to support 4-5 big wholesalers than 3-4-500 dealers across the US. The dist then has to give tech support, parts dist etc. A few years ago they pushed all the smaller dealers doing less than $500K anually thru distributors. This may be their long term master plan....... But who the heck knows?

A Sharp P4P'er PM'd me this today (alot of stuff here from a tech MB) There had been rumors circulating that Panasonic was in dire straits. Some rumors said that Panasonic was getting out of the game altogether, some said that Panasonic would continue to make SOHO machines, but was dumping the commercial-grade WORKiO line. Some said Panasonic was just dumping printers. All of these I discarded, because Panasonic just recently announced two new WORKiO models, and will be shipping new color...

FWIW, we haven't been a pandealer for many years now, and can still order parts, anything we want.. . . from MSC. What is MSC? I just got off the phone with Scott, my (former) sales rep. Apparently Panasonic cut 15,000 jobs nationwide (last day is end of February), and dumped all but the top handful of dealers. Those employees who lost their jobs can re-apply, but the "new" positions will be far fewer. Here's what I know so far: -If you have an existing Parts account, you'll keep it. Whew.

As an independent distributor, we have sold some of the Samsungs over the past year and a half and found them for the most part to be a disappoinment. I believe Ricoh is targeting the same SOHO prospects we were when we began implementing the Samsungs. Along the line of Vince's thinking, recommend that they sign a separate service agreement from the lease & that they ask for a clause that allows them to terminate the Service Agreement if satisfactory service levels are not delivered. This gives you a better shot of being able to get the service back if they are unhappy.

Xerox floats the idea of buying HP on the same day that the Fuji Xerox/ Xerox tussle seems to be resolved. Does that sound like a coincidence? I think Art hit the nail on the head when he said "In addition they would not have to purchase MFP's from Fuji Film in the future." I think this is Xerox's way of letting Fuji Xerox know that they do not hold all of the cards.
