Your Printer Just Got a Little More Secure
Newswise — In 2011, a small group of university researchers working on securing embedded devices caught the attention of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T). That effort has since evolved into a one-of-a-kind technology – called Symbiote – that Hewlett-Packard (HP) recently licensed from Red Balloon Security, to protect its printers from cyber attacks. The Symbiote technology will be integrated into HP’s LaserJet Enterprise printers and...

Conerns Over Chinese Manufactured Printer
I thought this would be a great topic for discussion since I'll be writing a blog in the near future on the subject. I would like to use comments that are posted and will give credit to those that will post. I know we have had a couple of discussions already, but would like to see if we can add some additional content. What would be your top 3 concerns for printers and copiers manufactured in The Peoples Republic of China (Red China)?

Re: Conerns Over Chinese Manufactured Printer
1. The Chinese government is attempting to hack the US daily. I would have a legitimate concern what is built into the the chips within the device. Not being paranoid, just thinking of real concerns. 2. Support. With support bad enough with some US based suppliers I would assume it would leave a bit to be desired. 3. This is not a concern but a question. Would the Chinese undercut other manufacturers and in turn they would be forced to lower prices?

Re: Conerns Over Chinese Manufactured Printer
The Ricoh GSA contract has labeled the copiers as "G" (government) devices. It's my understanding that these devices are manufactured in Japan. The reason is that the USA will not accept device manufactured in Japan. There's got to be a reason for that. It's my bet it's what John eluded to above "legitimate concern" over the chips that are being used. The USA government will also not accept Hauwai manufactured phones for the same reason. Makes you think why some of the largest companies in...

Re: Conerns Over Chinese Manufactured Printer
The Chinese gov't via military intelligence retains the unchallengeable right to demand of any Chinese corporation whatever information it desires. These new state security laws came into effect in 2018. It is unknown what would happen if the Chinese military demanded the same of a multi-national corporation manufacturing in China. Chinese culture is such that if the Chinese military could not get the information that it wanted via the front door of a multi-national it would simply pressure...
