Re: A Few Copier Vignettes from the Late Eighties & Nineties

Art, You and I are from similar professional backgrounds and times. We started in 1980 selling Sharp and Juki typewriters. Everything sold near MSRP. Then the fax boom came and we caught that wave perfectly. We sold Ricoh thermal faxes for full list ($2995.00). The only issue was cash flow; we sold them faster than we could order and purchase them. Copier Maintenance agreements went from .022 up to .035 and did not include drums, developer, toner, fuser rollers or lamps! Also, like your...

Print out a configuration list for each device Ask a user what they like most about the system and then ask what they dislike the most Ask a user what paper sizes they are printing or copying onto Anyone care to add anything else??

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sharp Corp rejected an offer by Samsung Electronics Co. to buy its copier and printer unit as part of a deal that will see Samsung invest $110 million in return for a 3 percent stake. "We did get a proposal from Samsung, but we declined," said Sharp spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama. She would not say how much Samsung offered and why Sharp refused. After failing to advance far enough toward a manufacturing process goal, Sharp says that it will miss a March 29 deadline to receive the second half of a $120 million investment from chipmaker Qualcomm. In December, the ailing Japanese electronics maker said it reached a partnership with U.S.-based Qualcomm, which agreed to invest $120 million in a project to jointly develop display panels. Attached is a useful Excel tool, that service departments will stand behind, no matter what marketing indicates. On the 60/75 engines, they are only spec'd to run up to 34lb bond through trays 1-3, and 43lb bond through the bypass. 43lb bond does not even equate to 110 index, as marketed, only 90lb index (just). This ahs been a bone of contention. Hope it helps. Cheers, Jim.

The 1060/1075 sales brochure states "110 lb. Index" through the bypass. The Operating Instructions manual states: 14-34lb. Bond from Paper Tray; 14-28lb. Bond from Bypass; 57.6lb Bond from Bypass with Thick Paper selected.

Thanks for the link Art. The pricing listed in this post is SIGNIFICANTLY below cost on all the products listed above (C900, Finisher, PerfectBinder, RingBinder, etc). If this pricing post scares the competitors to Ricoh and helps drive down costs on competitive units for the p4p community ... then great. Realistically, no one will ever see that pricing on the street for a Ricoh c900. Why would Ricoh price themselves closer to the Xerox 700 or KM 6500 when on the productivity side the c900...

Yeah, the specs say 90lb index through the bypass which would mean manual duplex, but customers hear only what they want and will soon be putting plywood through and complaining that they were told it would work. We have decided to show what 90lb index is to our customers and make sure they know that there is a lot of terminology related to paper, (index, bond, cover, bristol cover, etc...) it would be nice if we could have one standardized term. Also, brochures and reams just list 48lbs.

when you say thick paper i hope you mean no more than 43lb. bond. any heavier will cause your fuser to shred up just like the 3800. most spec sheets say 90lb. index is the max weight but 90lb. index translates to 43lb. bond.

i am not aware of a color product where there is no bypass option available. as for canon i have a customer with the canon and the are quite a few issues with the box i would worry about those. i do believe you can get a bypass option for your 2238. although the max weight there is 43lb. bond.

The 3800 series and the smaller 224/324 share virtually the same fuser and its inability to run much more than 20 lb bond. We cover it in a maintenance agreement but running photo paper or any coated paper voids that and they pay for it.

I was lead to believe it is a Ricoh design. The product manager from Japan was here last week and was quite proud of that fact that it was a Ricoh OEM. The printer has preformed flawlessly for us and we have tried to break it. Envelopes, cardstock, glossy/coated, out of spec stuff, it ran it all. We have been burnt before by the 204/305/306/Cl5000 junk so I am always skeptical about the Ricoh line when it comes to anything but 28 lb bond or less.
