Interesting thoughts, Thank you p4p. I have sold Canon for 20+ years. Many years ago they listed the imageClass line (MFP's under 2,500 dollars) and the entire scanning line and Wide Format line. As such I stopped selling those products as I have always been compensated on hardware gross profit and there was none. In a way its already gone to the internet and away from the outside sales rep........at least for stand alone printers and A4 devices. If all someone needs is a printer or an A4 to be used for basic printing,scanning and copying.....face it, they really don't need us already. If you've been at this a long time you probably remember the days when you sold a lot of A4 machines to small offices. 20 years ago if you needed an A4 you called a copier dealer. Those days are gone for the most part.

John, The PrintCopy Tool compares pretty favorably to Plotworks. I attached two documents to this post. The Product Support Guide lists differences between the two products. The PowerPoint has screen shots of all the settings in PrintCopy Tool. I hope this helps.

Across the board, I probably average 12-15% margin above whatever markup management puts in before my "Sales Cost" is published. For printers & desktop A4 devices, I just want to get a bunch of them in the field running pages & making money, so I sell most of them at my Sales Cost. That recurring revenue stream & volume in numbers is more valuable than making a few extra dollars on the hardware. I know everyone is just ball-parking it here but these questions are really hard to get dependable answers for. Most sales reps do not know what the dealership markup is prior to establishing sales cost so a 20% markup might actually be 40% from cost. The other is the compensation package. If there is compensation based on clicks or a click incentive, GP becomes less important. My payplan changed this year from being GP based to being revenue based. Consequently, I just sold a 22 unit deal...

KIP 800's are doing great!!! Every single customer that has demoed it has ordered one. We have installed 6 and all are running great with no issue, we another 12 on order. Only bad part is it is taking weeks to get them. We may never place a "new" monochrome machine again.

We are getting $.03 per sq ft. That is less than the monochrome machines, this is why I don't see us placing anymore new monochrome machines. We will place some refurbished ones to the customers that have to go low budget. Not only that it blows the Oce Colorwave away. We have a customer who makes these 20 ft full color GIS aerials that cost him $21.00 each to run on the Oce (his numbers not ours) we ran them on the KIP at a cost of $1.76.

Wow!! 12% reduction in sales... I know it is the smaller half year but that seems really light. Something seems to be wrong with the $'s. 50% operating profit would kick off a celebration large enough for all of us to hear.

Use a router to create a mini wireless network where the copier is the only thing connected. Velcro the router to the back of the copier. Name the router's wireless Copier. Plug router into copier with patch cable. You can get a wireless router on-line for less than $20 these days.

The biggest challenge I see is that you have to sell so much more to make the same money you have in years past. It used to be that if someone needed duplexing, or stapling, or speed, etc. they had to pay for higher scale equipment. Now they can get for $3,000 what they used to have to pay $10,000 for. It used to be that everyone was a profitable prospect. Now only the upper 20-30% represent a potential revenue capable of earning over $1,000. Even solution sales are hard to build profit in...

Wow. No poll answer regarding the rep’s activity…interesting. Over the years I have learned that if you work hard and SMART, you’ll hit your numbers. I also think that there is a condition that affects a lot of sales reps in virtually all industries. It is a type of an iron deficiency disorder. I think this is the big change over the last 15-20 years. If you think back, there was a time that you could buy an "off-brand" (not Xerox, Canon or Ricoh) and be really disappointed. They just wouldn't do the job. That's not true anymore, at least for level of machine 90% of office users need. Sure, we may beat the other players on some specific uncommon features, but if they just need a MFP to copy/scan/print, you'd be hard pressed to find one that couldn't accomplish that.

Obviously, each county/municipality has its own tax rates. Good suggestion but expensive for a 20 copier install. ShareScan is a hardware add on level of technology to support and maintain that I was hoping to avoid. I was looking at eCopy Paperworks but this law firm has approx. 500 PCs. At around $180.00 per workstation this gets very expensive. Plus I am unsure if the law firm would move away from Adobe PDF. The eCopy Solution is not exactly cheap. With ShareScan, all of the Connectors and 5 year M&S on 20 copiers located in six cities, the extra cost is approx. $200k. I need 14x Black 65 cpm and 6x Colour 65 cpm at approx. $200k. I can pitch the $400k but I do not have six independent dealers with any techncial support familiarity with eCopy Share Scan.

The Chinese YUAN has only marginally changed in the last 12 months compared to the USD. I have read on CNBC that this could be as much a result of Chinese Govt manipulating their currency on the world market to be undervalued to encourage exports.

It would seem that it all depends on where you structure your profitability. Since Ricoh is a Japanese manufacturer and sells its product to the US Ricoh company and then US Ricoh sells it to a dealer or direct, the profits can be structured to be very little if any in the US and very profitable in Japan. Ex: cost to manufacture is 10, sell to US mfg. sales concern for 20, US concern sells it for 22, dealers or direct sell it for 24. The cost of goods to the US is high and the profits remain...

Something to think about as well, adding to what was mentioned by Mega. The Japanese division is making the bulk of their profits on the manufacturing of toner. That is the money tree for them. They sell to Ricoh USA and they work through their channels to distribute the boxes. The ultimate goal is to “place the box” Ricoh USA makes their overhead by the profit on the box moving it to the Dealer and other channels. We all know the duty cycles are bull. If one manufacture say they have a duty cycle is 100,000 on a 20 cpm machine, all the others have to follow suit. These numbers have been off since I been in this business. i.e. 28 years.

Ricoh and Canon both say they are number 1 in the US and they are both right depending on how you are counting. Canon includes its desktop MFPs that sell in retail and Ricoh includes all MFPs priced above $1,000. Both include products that sell through any channel, but Canon has far more retail products that skew sales share in its favor. By Ricoh's math, it is number 1 with a 23.1 US share, followed by Canon. Ricoh also stated that it had the #1 color mfp share in 2009 (7 straight years)...

Some great points in this thread. In the end all of the main copier products do the same thing...they put toner on the paper, fuse it and offer a collection of ancillary tools which in many cases are more important (like scanning) than the copy function anymore. Duty cycle is a calculation where you take 22 business days per month x 8 hours x 60 mins x XXppm. Then subtract out service calls and PM's, then you have your duty cycle. There may be a little more complexity than this, but that is basically how you get the Duty Cycle. You can usually divide this number by 10-20 to get the recommended monthly volume.

On average, business computers are replaced every 5 years. That means (on average) 20% of all computers are replaced each year. If you did NOT charge for reinstalling drivers, you would need to employ someone (or several someones) full-time to drive around reinstalling print drivers on every client's computer they just replaced. It seems those customers most unwilling to pay are also those most unable to accomplish simple tasks such as reinstalling a print driver on their own. Funny story:...

Montecore, I have spent many years in sales and began networking our systems almost 10 years ago. Currently, I handle all of our connectivity and solutions for our company and I have connected and troubleshot hundreds, maybe thousands of computers. I agree, a technician can and should be able to resolve this problem. However, first it is necessary to identify the problem. This requires ruling out what it is not. Of course, hindsight is 20/20. If I tell you this story, it seems simple.
