In my opinion, what the dealer was funded is not material. That is between the dealership and the leasing company. If it truly is insurance to cover just the device you either insure for the amount necessary to cover the debt should something happen which would be sum of payments plus the residual value or insurance to cover the replacement cost. However, most office equipment is covered under a blanket policy covering all building contents.

To be on the safe side, I always give my clients the MSRP on the equipment as the number they should provide to their insurance company.

txeagle seems you may have the best answer, just quote them MSRP and we should be safe. We just went through one of these where the copier was damaged by fire and was covered under the BOP policy. The insurance company paid the stream of payments plus the residual. I'm always somewhat concerned when I have to quote a price to the customer and then that customer uses that for the value of the equipment to the leasing company. If you sell at or above MSRP due to significant GP or because a buyout was involved, I would quote the Stream of Payments of the hardware + the buyout, excluding the portion of the monthly payment attributable to Service/Supplies in the case of a bundled lease/service agreement.

Tx, ty for this this. I don't bundle MA/Supplies. I just don't want my customer to get jammed in case there is a loss. We've had quite a few losses here in NJ with the storm from a few years ago. I'm just looking for the right thing to do for customers who opt out of the leasing companies insurance. I'm somewhat skeptical of giving them stream of payments plus residual, may open up a can of worms.

So, the Oki or Teriostar 1040 is one page per minute faster than the Ricoh. Oki wants the user to replace the corona wire cartridge and the process cartridge. I believe the process cartridge is the drum. Now, the memories come back, if an end user scratches that drum, it's on the user to replace the drum which is going to be a very pricey item. Disclosure, disclosure, disclosure is the name of the game. I've not run into any step leases (yet) but know they are out there. I make it a policy to go over the T&C's of the simpliest lease agreement with the customer so that they understand full well. Can't tell you how many customers who were sold by former reps had now idea what the terms of their lease. To some it was a big surprise. Honesty and plain language is the best policy.

Our agreement says the same thing. Otherwise, no one who can utter the phrase "I never got the bill" ever has to make a payment, or we must send all invoices certified at extra expense. At a MINIMUM, you owe $311.15 EVERY MONTH. Pay it EVERY MONTH, whether you get an invoice or not.

In the traditional "copier" world, prior to putting machines under contract we would inspect them, perform service to bring it up to spec and bill the client. I tested it yesterday on an old Ricoh 3245c. It worked well on a PDF brochure aside from the fact that it didn't apply duplexing. On a Lease Agreement out of Word, it was a total debacle, not even close to being correct. I believe it split into 8 pages.

I think we all struggle with where to draw the line. The point I make with my Sales force, as well as with my customers is if you come in one day and you can't scan to email, but it was working fine yesterday the customer perceives this as "my MFD is broken" because one or more of the functions have stopped working. We default every color device we install to black & white. Are we losing some revenue on CPP contracts as a result? Of course we are. I think we're talking about the same thing in different terms to a certain extent just using different examples. Do the newer printers/MFP's still print black using all colors if "Color" is selected in the driver? If so, then you're right that they would spend the same regardless of the type of contract. If only the black cartridge is used to print black even if "Color" is selected in the driver, then they would spend far more on a toner-inclusive agreement than if they were not under...

To say that start-up supply costs are "lost" is not accurate and if your dealership is charging that "cost" against the G.P. of the deal, the salesrep is getting ripped off! It really isn't any different than selling supplies and getting paid via invoice in 30-60 days (which many dealerships actually pay commission for). The supplies get paid for in the subsequent clicks. This all assumes that there is a maintenance agreement that includes supplies of course.

Here is a sample version of a Wells Fargo lease agreement. This agreement shows the renewal payment term is 90% of the original payment amount. It should also be noted that there is notice clause from between 60-120 days and a restocking fee of $250.00.

If you're looking at the SP4310, this uses the same cartridge as the SP4100 & SP4110. I have a client with a mixed fleet for SP4100's, SP4110's and SP4310's, and we have been supplying them with MICR cartridges for several of these as part of their MPS Agreement for over 5 years. I don't understand this, GIS Dealers are the largest purchasers of Sharp devices. heck most GIS dealer sell more Sharp that Xerox to boot. Either GIS is demanding an agreement that is not profitable for Sharp or Sharp suddenly has another revenue source.

I get no comp for maintenance, however I will get a comp on supplies if I don't sell am maintenance agreement, go figure. Over the years I've gotten pretty good with selling service agreements, but there was also a time when I did not sell them. So, I guess I'm know back to selling the standard warranty and supplies. My goodness this is so simple. People in this industry are so ignorant sometimes it hurts. Ouch I'm in pain. You are aware that most dealers have an agreement with lease companies that after the first three months of renewals the over pay is split 75% (for the dealer) and (25% for the lease company)? Shame on you Leppert you absolutely know this or should or get out of the advice business. Secondly shame on any rep that allows a lease to get anywhere near less than 18 months left on a lease.

I agree with your first point, but on the second regarding the time at which to upgrade a customer, you're leaving a LOT of money on the table by rolling in that much buyout with each upgrade. If the customer is paying $1,000 per month, rolling in 18 payments could cost you up to $18,000 in revenue and profit. I don't know how you're paid, but that would make a big difference to my paycheck. I know there's a greater risk of competition getting in the longer I let the lease ride, but if I...

I would like to see service departments that will work with sales when it comes to old devices that are being supported after 8 years or so. Our service is not cheap and that's not a bad thing, however at some point in time we need to tell the customer that either we won't offer a ma agreement, and or even a break and fix.

Art, After 8 years I would think they are already paying for a new copier and service. Wouldnt a TCO saying the new is the same price as the old work? Yoda: We have many systems that were purchased from the leasing companies in 09, 10, and 11. Many of these systems are wide format system and we're still servicing them after 7,8 & 9 years. You old employer will not be able to completely stop you from making a living in your field. In fact the more restrictive the non compete is the less likely a Judge will be inclined to honor it. Can you post the non compete agreement (just sanitize the names on it). I have heard of a Judge who allowed the ex employer to pick a very limited area (NOT New England, but maybe Boston proper) this leaves many other territories available for a Sales Rep to work.
