John, The PrintCopy Tool compares pretty favorably to Plotworks. I attached two documents to this post. The Product Support Guide lists differences between the two products. The PowerPoint has screen shots of all the settings in PrintCopy Tool. I hope this helps.

Re: Memjet Color Printers to the Rescue?
This is pretty impressive, but has been around for several years. There have to be significant issues that have prevented adoption. I suspect that clogged nozzles are a really expensive problem for intermittent use machines, and imagine the level of ink wasted keeping them fresh. Folks throw a fit about a $600 print head for a Canon plotter and it's guaranteed for a year. I see a limited market for this.

Hi Art, I agree. Ricoh needs an entry level 4 D/min system. I have always thought Ricoh should take thier gel sprinter technology and develop a plotter around it, instead they rely on Epson to fill this void. They seem ready to concede the 4 d market to Oce, Kip and the plotter cometitors. I wonder if it is the aftermarket that drives the decision. With a 4 D-Size per minute you are generating less clicks and less aftermarket revenue. Perhaps they want use limited dollars to develope higher...

The AEC market is in the dumps, however more and more of my clients are opting to buy the 240W's and 2400W's from the leasing company rather than spend for a 6ppm system!! Ricoh will be introducing a gel plotter in the summer, and oh my, the gelsprinters were the worst and I hope these are very different. The piezo print head is not geared for low volume users.

Personally I think it's ugly! It is much needed but I'm more in favor of also have a 24 plotter too. We still have nothing that can compete in the $10K range for Architects or Surveyors that want an MFP but only need 24x36 output. The retail on this system is about $15k.

Just browse through the brochure and documentation for the Canon. The user interface on the MFP is weak. Its a plotter with a scanner (probably a Contex) added. The Ricoh MFP has our standard user interface. Anybody who has a Ricoh MFP of any kind can walk up to this new machine and know exactly how to use it. Would be interesting to see a Monster Garage featuring the two products.

Yes, that's the nice thing about the Canon system you can hook it up to any of there plotters. So if you have a customer looking for high end graphics you a graphics plotter if the customer is AEC you go with the 700 series.

There are no laser based wide format color systems out there from the major manufacturers. If there are, they are price prohibitive. What your customer would find would be a couple of systems to meet his or her needs. Oce has a TCS400 system which is a separate scanner, controller and printer. They can scan the color document and direct it to print on the inkjet printer. No doubt an expensive output solution because it is ink based. Probably looking at the $40,000 range for this one. SNMP connection between the Client PC and Server PC is blocked. Just turn off the firewall on the server PC, or have the IT guy allow an exception for port 161. You can still print from the Client PC, even if you get the SNMP message, just can't be certain whether the plotter is on line and ready.

My mailers are going out the last week of March! I am going to put a cost justification spreadsheet together for those customers who plot over two hundred times a month. I figue the cost for a d size (architect) plot is close to .13 per square foot. What are your thoughts on the .13 per square foor for a typical HP Plotter. Art

Has anyone seen anything in writing on this model (brochure, pricing, etc.)? I just spoke with Savin and I'm told it is being launched in two weeks, so I figure there has to be info available somewhere. I have a bid due today and would love to include this model (the client is preparing to purchase a plotter for a satellite office along with several MFP's). I am waiting on a reply from Savin, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll let you know what I find (if anything). Brian

Thats one of the biggest cost is for outsourcing the copies. Another is the cost to produce a drawing on a plotter compared to the cost on our system. John and I spoke the other day and we believe the savings is .45 - .65 cent savings per "D" size drawing. Any others?? Art

I haven't delved into the world of connected wide format very often in the past, so this is all new to me (but the FW240 has me psyched on breaking into this market) Also, am I right in my assumption that plotters can only produce line drawings with no fill or gray scale? Brian: Here we go. When calculating cost of the HP plotters there are two main costs associated with these systems. Paper and Ink. The ink is liquid ink the same type used in ink jet printers. I have calculated and done some very good guessing and have arrived at the cost of .07 cents per square foot for the cost of ink on an average HP plotter. Based on a "d" size drawing which is 24x36 or 6 sqaure feet. The cost for ink is about .42 cents give or take for more or less coverage. I think the...

Chops Not sure if I can help I haven't sold a system with Plotworks yet, what I can tell you is that I did beat a KIP 7900 without plotworks using the web batch print tool that comes with the system. Are they an incumbent KIP user? If not I would focus on brand of Ricoh, the quality and the ease of use. Show them how to scan to dropbox from the MFP panel, better yet focus on the document server these maybe to areas that you can win with. Everything that I've be told about plotworks is that...

we lost due to "little things" the owner wanted that KIP does: Like color scanning to print directly to a Canon color plotter, SEEING a watermark you create and import onto a print job prior to printing, and (mostly) overall processing speed on a problem multi-page PDF they had that the KIP printed faster.

This is an AutoCAD function and should work with any HDI or windows base printer. As long as everyone is using the same plotter or printer (they are). Example: when you create a MS word document and print it out, then, save the document. You also save the printer setting with the document (8.5*11, landscape, margins, layout…) this is the PC3 file. This file can be placed into other files as a default printer setting.

Well, Since I'm alone on this one I'll answer my own question in case anyone else does come across this. Apparently the 2 shades in vector graphics under the plotter settings is the fix. For the life of me couldn't figure out what the "black and white" button does because it didn't change a thing? Tip my hat to Ratio for making things easy!

BigMac, I think you are in good shape here. The Ricoh has the following advantages. Copy mode is a 6-1 speed difference and higher copy quality on the Ricoh. Scanning will be much better on the Ricoh. How do I know, because I have tested it against the HP. One roll feed and only a 150' roll at that. Do they really want to change paper that often? Ok, 1st, that plotter status should always say that unless you have AutoCAD loaded on the PC. It isn't actually an error, it's simply telling you you don't have AutoCAD installed so it won't process DWG files. I *think* it is totally unrelated to your issue. I think Bandit has the answer, using the 300dpi driver should make it work. V-tec, the version of *reader* is not the problem, it is the actual version the PDF was created in, not viewed or printed from. I also install and reccommend...

I disagree. Most law firms and many insurance companies still have a commonly re-ocurring need for mixed size originals. I am currently working with one European shipping company based in NA that wants to do do mixed size originals with a mix of A3 and A4 documents. I say it cannot be done as the paper is all of different widths. I am hoping that my unscrupoulous competitive vendors will admit to the same..... not likely!!! They want the sale today! Please advise.

A3 (11 x 17) and A4 (8 1/2 x 11) can be run at the same time with auto paper select making what you put in what you get out using mixed-originals and the mixed originals setting. The sizes you mention are European, but I'm sure they will work. As long as it's a standard document size it should work.

Sorry, I meant to say a mix of A4 and Legal size documents. I agree most copiers should be able to do mixed size originals with a combo of A3/A4 and Letter-R/Legal. The problem I am having and I do not think it can be done is one of a mix of A4 and legal mixing North American and European sized paper in the same document. This is because the two paper sizes are of different widths.

I think that next generation SOFTWARE will offer the ability to split jobs between multiple WF units - they do not have to be all Rioch WF. It will also be able to look for CMYK to send to a color plotter, or page size to send to small format if appropriate.

My company is new to the Wide Format market, but this is what I have seen. Pricing is very similar.....Xerox is always around as is OCE. I don't have lots of product knowledge, and have only placed 1 piece so far, and it' has been a nightmare.. The biggest challenge that I see right now is HP. I have been looking for applications where people are currently using plotters....Everything always goes great but HP can sell a plotter with a scan option for under 6k....The differnce on the front is...

Sure, now granted it's been a while sense I've install the Ricoh one but it just installed in the "add a plotter" wizard within AutoCAD. The wizard is found in the plotter manager area within AutoCAD.

Re: New Canon Large Format Systems
Jason, in Canada the IPF models are sold through the dealer channel but in the US they're sold through the consumer channel. I've had a situation too where a customer purchased it in the US for less than my cost. I've had success using those systems to knock out customers who are replacing their toner-based Oce systems. They're expecting to pay $10-20,000 and a Canon inkjet plotter is $2000. There's not always great margins in them but they're a foot in the door to the MFP and supplies.

Haha! Something pretty funny in with one of the links below. "Moving closer to the paperless office". This was fifteen years ago. Do you remember the Ricoh C1224? Was a color MFP that had a speed of 12 pages per minute in color and 24 pages per minute in black. Needless to say that Ricoh never informed sales that the copier would go into auto calibrate during a print or copy run for up to minutes! Web Print Tool on MP W6700SP HELP!
Below is an email from one of my clients. My service department is telling me this is a limitation of the WEB PRINT TOOL. Can anyone help! Gents, We ran in to another issue last week. Using the web printing tool, we send a set of PDFs to the plotter set to print at 1/2 size. We changed the settings per below. The full size set was 42”x30”. The actual drawings printed ½ size, but the sheet cut at the original sheet size of 42”x30” still making for significant waste. The old plotter...
