I Wouldn’t Buy a Fuji Xerox

Vince McHugh (Guest) ·
July 2, 2018 FujiFilm is suing Xerox for a Billion dollars because Xerox backed out of the merger after one of the Xerox Board of Directors staged a rebellion. “ Fujifilm (also)…threatened to compete against Xerox Corp …if it failed to renew its technology agreement in 2021.” If you are unaware of the relationship between Fuji and Xerox, Fuji makes a large portion of Xerox’s line of Office equipment. Your Xerox Rep probably just calls them “Xerox” because he doesn’t want you concerned about...

With all the customers who supposedly “do 75% research before meeting with anyone” I couldn’t imagine anyone dealing with anyone who sold xerox equipment if they truly did any research.

I have a municipal RFP for 50+ copiers that I have to a make a group presentation to this month. I expect one of the final three making a presentation is Xerox, who is not the incumbent vendor. How would you go about dropping this breaking news on the audience? I know it is not good etiquette to speak badly about your competitors but I definitely do not want to let this bone head move by Xerox to slip by. As a Toshiba sales rep, I have been bad mouthed by my competitors for the last two...

To me it’s not bad mouthing anyone when you share “news” with a customer. I keep a portfolio of recent industry news for people to see.

I have never had a prospective customer tell me anything other than thank you for sharing the information. What I have had is people throw that companies stuff in the trash in front of me, or hand it to me and say thanks you made the decision easy. Usually if they are throwing it away I just tell them I will take it and dispose of it for them after I get the information I need off it.

This Week in Copiers Five Years Ago Second Week of February 2018 Real Copier Sales Mistakes Often a competitive sales rep will try and convince a copier purchaser to switch product based upon how much money we can save you. The sales rep presents convincing Total cost of ownership analysis. The only problem being that sometimes the customer's current costs are totally made up by the sales rep. The sales rep is counting on, in some companies, that it might be too much work for the purchaser...

This Week in Copiers Five Years Ago Second Week of May 2018 Real Copier Sales Here is something I don't see others do very often...when going in early to renew a 36 month lease, I don't don't "eat" the buy-out, I extend the term. If I'm going to renew at 34 months, I write the renewal for 38 months. I explain to the DM that it ends up being the same 72 months, they just get the benefit of the lower renewal payment a couple months more. The extra funding from a 38 month rate doesn't cover all...

This Week in Copiers Five Years Ago Third Week of May 2018 Real Copier Sales Almost a week ago I had an email response from my jerseyplotters web site that a company was interested in a wide format MFP. I followed up with a few emails and a call for the first three days and finally connected with one of the DM's on the fourth day. As luck would have it, we are flush with wide format demo MFP's in our office. We were able to set the demonstration and our prospect (DM) arrived and was able to...

This Week in the Copier Industry 5 Years Ago Last Week of June 2018 Real Copier Sales Today was a sweet day for me because after eight years I finally sealed the deal with a net new client for a $17K order. Eight years! I guess this is a testament about not giving up, not giving up when you don't win the first first and second time. For many reps they may never make that 8 year mark, many may give up after the first loss and not alone the second loss. After 43 years of courting SMB clients...

This Week in the Copier Industry 5 Years Ago Second Week of January 2019 Real Copier Sales I think a lot of the small operations are getting squeezed out because they didn't keep up with technology and like said, there are a lot of acquisitions. I'd say its a really good time to be a mid-sized dealer in the 5-10 million dollar range. My experience has been that the giants created by these acquisitions don't provide the level of customer service that customers will get from a mid-sized...
