Re: A Few Copier Vignettes from the Late Eighties & Nineties
Art, You and I are from similar professional backgrounds and times. We started in 1980 selling Sharp and Juki typewriters. Everything sold near MSRP. Then the fax boom came and we caught that wave perfectly. We sold Ricoh thermal faxes for full list ($2995.00). The only issue was cash flow; we sold them faster than we could order and purchase them. Copier Maintenance agreements went from .022 up to .035 and did not include drums, developer, toner, fuser rollers or lamps! Also, like your...

Re: PostScript Vs Fiery
I agree, processing on the machine has advanced to the point that getting a Fiery is not a necessity. You may still encounter times that it is. If you need Pantone, you must have a Fiery. If you want to expertly adjust colors, you must have a Fiery. If you want to swap back and forth between "Pleasing Color"(when it doesn't matter what red it is, as long and it looks red) and "Accurate Color" (when it doesn't matter if it looks good to you because it's not their logo's red), you need a...

Re: Printing Envelopes Reliably on MPC300
I think Old Glory means A4. Remember, 4 is less than 3 (it's a metric thing). You should be able to create an "envelope printer" by installing a second instance of the printer with the same IP address. In the PCL 6 driver (not universal), you can go into the printer properties, print preferences, detailed settings and rotate the image 180 degrees. When you say the printer "red lights", what is the error? Is it a paper type mismatch? If so, what is it calling for? How may envelopes are they...

Re: Unfair practice of providing startup supplies on state and federal contracts
Good point. But I do not think that Ricoh or any manufacturer wants to lose out up front. They want that money just like anyone else. So they can include the consumables but then they just raise cost to the dealer. In my opinion gov't contracts and bids are a waste of time. You work so hard to earn the business and there are 10 people bidding. Then you have provided the best long term solution that is proven to save them the most over 5 years. But guess what? The gov't entity is 7 million in...

Re: Data Destruction
I'm a security guy. As soon as this client mentioned an end-of-lease security concern my first thought was to shred the drive. I've seen quite a selection of software on the market with claims of getting rid of the data for good but upon further investigation it's not 100% reliable. We're only as reliable as the solutions we offer. The obstacle here is that, apparently, leasing companies don't care to have hardware returned to them with the HDs in 1000 pieces. I have a good friend that runs...

I don't know how much you have worked with these but some things to keep in mind with dig. dups...The print will move some on every sheet and every pass. It just isn't noticed with a single color or on the first pass. Therefore, on a two-color of red and black for instance, the black has moved alittle "+" on some sheets and alittle "-" on others as did the red on the second pass. The problems come in on those sheets where the black went alittle "+" on the same sheet where the red went...

Re: Halftones w/JP8500 & Quark
Quick note about Quark and LPI. First the obvious thing, changing LPI will change the size of the dots in your Photo. a low LPI, like 60 will make the dots in the photo readily apparent(not always a bad thing). A high LPI like 133 will make the dots so small many pictures will come out as a big blob of ink on the duplicator. Secondly, Quark will downsample any TIFF image to twice the resolution of your LPI, so a 65LPI setting means you are printing 130dpi TIFFs, again, this isn't such a bad...

It appears to not have any speed or quick dials, no finishing...I don't even think it has zoom. Maximum paper capacity is only 1600 sheets (600 standard). Re: B2C defined
Allow me to comment on this for a moment. Ricoh B2C is a strategy, not a product. The conecpt of B2C came about as an effort to transform B&W customers into color. The B2C strategy was to offer a system that was equivalent to B&W systems in every feature and function, with comparable B&W CPC. Most importantly, systems like this did not need a color specialist to sell as typical customers were just looking to make sure reference colors were in place (ie red apples, blue sky, and...

First, if I was the salesperson I would send the sales admin a gift certificate for a nice dinner for two. Second, I'd come in Monday morning and start hitting it hard to have a great start to the new year. Third, I'd take Red and my sales manager out for a drink after work on Monday and ask them when writing and booking business is a bad thing. Fourth, I wouldn't think about it again.

so in conclusion to the story, management blamed sales person for cc'ing Red in an email to management. Salesperson thought it would be GOOD that they know also. Nothing is being done about the nasty vm's. Salesperson then stated they will just not acknowledge Red anymore. So, it is almost two weeks later nothing is delivered, backordered from Ricoh on accessories, and no delivery in site for at least 7 or eight more days. Salesperson is now looking for a NEW job!

Yes, it does seem suspicious that you are the first person reporting the problem, but a "Tech Alert" really is the best way to go. Of course, on the last one they sent to me they flat-out lied on the written response and I caught them red-handed. They said they tested a feature, but when I...

Re: How do you manage Letter of Intent dates for your customers?
The only time a letter of intent is required is if you are moving to a new leasing company and taking out your competitor. If you are the paper holder then no letter of intent is needed as you can upgrade to return or keep and all the transaction is internal with the leasing company. If a letter is needed make sure it is sent in certified to protect the customer. Leasing companies like to play games after they get these letters. They will call the customer and try to convince them to buy the...
