When Ed Schmid was running eCopy they had the best pre & post sales support in the industry. You could call an 800 # while onsite and get someone to answer the phone who actually knew the product better than you did. Those were the days when eCopy was a Canon only product. But Canon did not buy a controlling interest in eCopy so when their contract ran out, eCopy opened up to all copier manufacturers, and their support became poor, the rapid expansion overwhelmed them. i doubt there is any law that covers this. As far as I know, it is perfectly legal to sell your product for one price to one person and another price to another person... Don't we all do this all the time? It actually reminds me of a lawsuit involving Microsoft where they had agreed on a "most-favored" clause in their contract with a PC supplier (Dell? I forget, doesn't matter) meaning that they had guaranteed Dell that no matter what deal they worked out with other suppliers they would...

Re: Salespeople Get No Respect?

Neal ·
First, if I was the salesperson I would send the sales admin a gift certificate for a nice dinner for two. Second, I'd come in Monday morning and start hitting it hard to have a great start to the new year. Third, I'd take Red and my sales manager out for a drink after work on Monday and ask them when writing and booking business is a bad thing. Fourth, I wouldn't think about it again.

I'm a fan of making the prize significant enough that people really get competitive with it. Perhaps a weekend retreat to somewhere on the Eastern Shore of MD with a significant other with a per diem & a good seafood dinner paid for by the company. Just the first thing that comes to mind having eaten some incredible lobster in MD.

Re: Panasonic Dumps Dealers, Keeps all but a handful!!!!

Art Post (Guest) ·
FWIW, we haven't been a pandealer for many years now, and can still order parts, anything we want.. . . from MSC. What is MSC? I just got off the phone with Scott, my (former) sales rep. Apparently Panasonic cut 15,000 jobs nationwide (last day is end of February), and dumped all but the top handful of dealers. Those employees who lost their jobs can re-apply, but the "new" positions will be far fewer. Here's what I know so far: -If you have an existing Parts account, you'll keep it. Whew.

Just food for thought on this subject, I mentioned the current RBS tactics to my father at dinner tonight and he thought it would be reason for a lawsuit. I have to listen to his advice because his business is administering corporate class actions and corporate bankruptcy. I could see in the not-too-distant future the independent dealers coming together to fight Ricoh for their predatory pricing behavior. What a horrible way to protect market share? I wanted to respond to the "Best Software & Services Providers" Award. It's my understanding and I could be wrong, is that a dealer survey is sent to "x" dealers with the above questions. There were four nominees that I heard of and they were: ACDI FM Audit Paper Cut Square 9 Where is DocuWare, Nuance, Print Audit, PSIGEN, MWAI and the others? Which got me to thinking. Is Cannata using the same pool of dealers every year for the voting? I'm thinking maybe yes, because these players in...

I agree Rick Taylor has done a superb job at KM but I think he does win it every year. Rightfully so in my opinion, but I also believe Cannata uses the same dealers every year. Since I met them a couple years ago and we use 4 or 5 partners on the lists now we have been included in the voting for the last 2 years.

Ty for the comment, I think the same about Taylor. So, unless those dealers change who they use as third party supplies, none of the other will ever get on the list.

What are you experiencing in the field? From incoming leads, I would agree than half or more are asking for a specific brand an model number. Thus, it's obvious that they have done their homework or someone else did it for them. How are buyers different than they were 5 years ago? I'm lucky if I can remember what I ate for dinner last week! Case in point, I had a multiple system lead a few months ago. The buyer outlined all of the features that he needed in an RFQ (commercial account), he...

I believe this is a fair estimate but in my experience I believe it is mainly on the call in's. When someone calls me and asks for "X" model with a booklet finisher, 100 sheet doc feeder, fax, USB, Postscript, Tandem Paper Tray and Hole Punch, I pretty much think they have already been talking to sales reps or have been reading the brochure. I do however still go on many appointments and calls where the client has absolutely no clue what they want or anything. I'm with Art, I can barely...

That's hilarious. I forget what I ate for dinner last night too... I think a call-in where they have a model and accessories in mind is certainly a deal that is to the end of the buying process and they are just validating the price. (Keeping them honest.) However, I wonder about early in the buying process: where do they go to get their initial questions answered? What do they find online? What could you serve up that would be helpful--and get you found? Once they found you, would the find...

I am deeply concerned about the race to the bottom with A4 product. A4 product certainly gets better everyday and some salespeople say it is just as good as A3...maybe true... except for your commissions. If you like Kraft dinner or Ramen noodles, downgrade your customers from A3 to A4. Let us not forget one of the largest A4 players out there is Lexmark. Ray Stasiezcko ·
Appreciate the comments. However, your arguments regarding A4 vs. A3 pertain to what’s good for you. Industries which are going through disruption or when an industry’s particular product or its services become less valuable to those once dependent on them. The disease of Product-Centric thinking will infect those with a stubbornness to modify. It is not up to those who sell a product or service to determine its value. Its value is determined by those who buy the product or service.

There is little to no margin in A4. Folks who want those products are just going to buy on-line. Let them. Best bet is focus on areas where you can still make money. Let other people chase the race to the bottom stuff.
