Traditionally your best sales people make the worst sales managers. For me, I would take the sales manager who does not sell. In addition I would want more of the bean counter sales manager. Keep track of my numbers, tell me where I am and where I need to be on a consistent basis. I've met many sales managers over the years and have never seen one that can manage and coach effectivity. It's usually one or the other.

Thus the issue. True managers must learn how to lead, coach and nurture the sales team. This is a huge issue inside sales teams all over the place. Thus why I use the sales/sports analogy - they get paid to coach their teams to greatness while most sales managers manage to outdated benchmarks and numbers.
