Preparing for the Change of Disruption in the Copier Industry

Art Post ·
I received the email below from Deon (P4P Member) and agreed with Deon that this would be a great topic for discussion with our peers. Feel free to chime and post your thoughts. I was in the UAE a week ago and it seems that this industry is changing big time faster than i thpught. Im not too sure that we will be able to survive only selling copiers etc. Over the last year or so we have also added telecommunication/voip and CCTV. It might take time but this digital disruption will hurt us if...

Art, I think the reports of our demise are greatly exaggerated. Yes, you will continue to see a reduction in printing and for sure copying, but "plummeting in 3 years" is hyperbole IMHO . The Ricoh & Toshiba, & Xerox reports are a continuing of the Big Crunch, a culling of the herd. That leaves more of the pie for those who are doing well. That's my $0.02 Vince McHugh

Understood, however we haven't had a major manufacturer drop out yet. In fact, Epson and HP are now targeting the A3 business model. Thus, less pages, more competition equals less profit. Will be interesting to see where all of this goes. You and I may be retired long before there is a BIG change

I actually came into the copier world from the typewrite world. Started my career with a thriving typewriter dealer. The company had a lock on government accounts in 1/3rd of the state and also did the typewriter repair work for Sears stores in half the state in addition to a ton of up and down the street business. I was primarily a technician at the time and saw the writing on the wall when one of my large school districts eliminated its 200+ typewriters in one fell swoop. Within 18 months...

Thoughts About the Copier Industry?

Art Post ·
Just a little background on this email. Deon (South Africa Dealer) sent me the article from RTM where the original headline was “ Ricoh Says it Will Quit Paper and Shareholders Go Crazy .”. I'm guessing there was some pressure from Ricoh because within 48 hours the headline was changed to Ricoh Transitions From Paper and Shareholders Get Excited. Deon emailed me this thoughts and I thought the time is right to have a discussion based as to where our industry in going. We would love to hear...

I agree consolidation is a must. One of the recent posts had Ricoh partnering with other A3 manufacturers? Don't know how true that is. We may see some surprises this April which is the start of the new year for all of the Japanese manufacturers. COVID still hanging around here in the East. After the Presidents speech tonight he wasn't giving much hope for an early end to this. We can only hope and pray. Thanks for the comment!

Consolidation has to occur. There is no way there can be this many competitors selling essentially the same device. Machine hardware has hit a plateau, there isn't really much to advance other than adopting a completely different technology. So they add apps and connectivity which is great but eventually those platforms will also consolidate and there wont be a need for all of this diversification to print a piece of paper.
