The large disruption will be from those who can isolate the realities of the customers needs and sell based on those realities. Interesting thoughts, Thank you p4p. I have sold Canon for 20+ years. Many years ago they listed the imageClass line (MFP's under 2,500 dollars) and the entire scanning line and Wide Format line. As such I stopped selling those products as I have always been compensated on hardware gross profit and there was none. In a way its already gone to the internet and away from the outside sales rep........at least for stand alone printers and A4 devices. If all someone needs is a printer or an A4 to be used for basic printing,scanning and copying.....face it, they really don't need us already. If you've been at this a long time you probably remember the days when you sold a lot of A4 machines to small offices. 20 years ago if you needed an A4 you called a copier dealer. Those days are gone for the most part.

I pretty much never see anyone proposing Toshiba color equipment, so I haven't seen this. There are a few Kyocera dealers I've seen proposing their tiered color billing capabilities. What shocks me is that no Ricoh dealers have started marketing this. The Cxx02 series & Cxx03 series have the ability to report multiple tiers of color coverage for billing purposes, but in a market with 7 dealers + RBS selling RFG products I have yet to see a single dealer pushing it.

This may be true of a commodity (like envelopes, or coffee, or even a PC) but copiers, really MFDs require a lot of attention, both before and after a customer buys it. More than a few copier/ printers are manufactured in Thailand and the Philippines due to low labor costs. I do not know but I think these products tend to be more low end A4 and printer products. I think most A3 product is made in China. I can only speak for Toshiba but I know the majority of North American toner is made in North Dakota. As I am from Canada, I am hoping with fingers crossed that this very likely US tariff war with China will not effect us.

If you can't speculate, how do you know they are idiots? The business model of selling products at a loss to gain future revenue is not new. Microsoft loses money every time someone buys an xBox, Dell gives away printers costing $1,000 for free, Razors and blades, etc. All of those examples have been very successful for years.

Yes, it will probably take a while, BUT as I understand it, the low-end machines (50ppm and lower)that are "Imagistics" aren't made by Oce anyway. In that respect, I think Canon products will convert more of their MIF than you are thinking.

Considering Samsung's penchant for allowing other manufacturer's to relabel there product (Xerox & Muratec already relabel their A4) I'm curious as to whether Ricoh's A4 will be made by Samsung or Ricoh, particularly since Ricoh already relabels some Samsung printers. The other relabel option could be Lexmark because of the relationship they have w/ the Ricoh InfoPrint division. I love the new Lexmark A4 products offered to their BSD partners, by the way.

The solutions range in price from $99 to $599, depending on the solution, but the dealer has some control over the price. There are really only 9 core models (3 printers, 5 desktop MFP, 2 console MFP); the remaining 7 models are simply different standard configurations that are available. All products share the same user interface at the MFP and range in speed from 40ppm to 55ppm.

I would like to hear from anyone that has some insight on the new Bizhub color production 80 PPM system. I heard from a customer that they were shown this unit in a "behind the scenes" preview at Print 09 and that KM would be launching it this spring. From what I gathered, they beefed up the g/m² , changed the feeding mechanism, tighter registration and would share the accessories as the b/w 1200 unit. Very curious to see where it is positioned relative to Ricoh's production products.

Now that you raise the subject of Consumables, Ricoh allows IKON to purchase heavily from KATUN. IKON has always been notorious for buying non-OEM parts and supplies at deep discounts, which is one of the reason they had a poor reputation for service. Yet, it also helped IKON steal many a deal. Possibly, this practice will change for Ricoh products and they will only source Third Party Aftermarket for theie Canon base at this time.

Art, this is a serious issue. This is no different than hard drives in our computers, laptops, netbooks or anything that uses a HD. They are all storing electronic digital magnetic information. Those that have encryption are not safe if you know what you are doing. These encrypted containers can easily be tapped and opened. wow, thanx for that! I thought we were safe with the lastest Ricoh security measures. Are we? I knew older copiers were very suceptable to getting information, however with recent upgrades with Ricoh products are we safe? Seems like none of us are safe except for pulverizing the drive as you stated. How is everyone else handling this? Is the CBS guy blowing smoke, or are there criminals out there buying copiers just to get access to the hard drives and if so, it's gotta be a hot and miss...

There is no specific volume which will become infliction point of cannabalisation...it we be based on the Vendors' being able to educate the customers. Most(over95%) of the current print/copy volumes is only A4, hence there is a strong point in A4 eating into A3 market. It is propelled by serious ATL work done by companies like HP. In my marketplace, the used A3 market (especially Colour)is still able to displace new A4 products at the same price. Colour quality and reliability has improved a lot over the last few years, so even a one generation old colour copier is very much in demand. I'm looking at a break point of around 10k/month, at that point, at least at my dealership, a3 is a lower tco. They [the samsung rep]say when you look at total volumes, 11x17 only accounts for like 3% of the global print volume. What I've seen is that its not accurate to extrapolate that only 3% of customers need it, it means that there is a wider group of customers that use it outside AEC, but they do a tiny amount of it. The most important question to ask is "how much do you copy 11x17"? If the answer is none, then the next question is "how often do you print 11x17"? When the answer is quite often, well A3 is then a no brainer, however if the answer is rarely, then I'll bundle an 11x17 laser or ink printer. Based on under 10K per month, A4 will save the customer on the TCO over the term of a 5 year lease.
