Re: Will outside Sales Rep's go away?

TML ·
I’m a little late to this party but had the thread open since it was posted. As a 35 year old i straddle the “millennial” and old school gap (in my opinion haha). There is value of ordering things online that can be commonly used or even basic electronics. But if it’s anything above basic, I still believe talking to someone even if on the phone, pays dividends. We recently bought a new vehicle for my wife and explored for weeks online our options, the new vehicles options, what the price...

Re: Another Ricoh Direct Give Away

Headshot ·
Hey, I'm a new RBS rep, I mean reallly green. Just started out in the business. FYI, I've been told to stay away from dealer accounts. I admit, it can get sticky when proposals are thrown around; but generally we have been instructed that its a "hands off" customer. There isn't some corporate push to squeeze dealers out is all i'm saying. Your point on margins is noted. I'm just confused that this is somehow something new. If Ford sold cars directly, I'd expect them to be a little cheaper...

Well, my view the situation you describe is this: If Ford wants to sell cars directly, that's fine and they can do that. If they instead choose to sell cars through dealers, they do not need also come into the same market as those dealers and hang a big banner saying "$4,000 cheaper than not buying direct!" "Get better support by buying direct!" All I'm trying to say is this: If you have a dealer channel, support it. If you think direct is the way to go, just get rid of dealers. Simple enough.

Re: Another Ricoh Direct Give Away

Ford would LOVE to go with this model. Unfortunately, state franchise laws make it virtually impossible for auto manufacturers to eliminate dealers. That's why the domestics have two to three times as many dealers as they need, compared to the imports. This leads to lower average selling prices, lower dealership value, and a need to gather margin elsewhere. Such as muffler wax and windshield wiper protection plans. All in all, worsening the car buying experience. Some links...

Re: Managed Network Services discussion

Of course they are different. So is Ford Motor and Ford Motor Credit but the same principle applies. Are you suggesting that our accounts receivable can't handle managed network invoices? That Accounts payable can't pay vendors who supply network services hardware? That the warehouse is ill-equipped to inventory equipment and parts if they are to cover our network services responsibilities? Those are the people in common. Like I said, what makes us successful are the resources we bring in to...

According to your logic CDW which has an awesome AR/AP, Warehouse, logistics, order processing and true recurrent B2B customers could do it. Why don't they? Why doesn't everybody? Why not Sears or JC Penny? Because the businesses don't, won't and never will fit. Networks are like snowflakes each one different and individual, MFPS are like donuts each one the same with different frosting. Lets take GM and GMAC as the example instead of Ford. So its a 50/50 success ratio not for my money. Even...

Re: Ricoh Dealership in Minnesota will buy.......

Independent Dealers will never compete successfully with any Direct _BS branch on price. The _BS Branch has shown that they are willing to run their branches at a loss for years! We must sell at a profit, IMHO they should (Legally) have to also sell at a profit (Don't get me started on dumping). If you work for an independent dealer and you are trying to compete with a _BS Branch (that sells your product) on price then you are playing into their hands, and you are going broke. They can...

Keep in mind, auto manufacturers would directly dominate car sales if not for state laws designed to protect local dealers passed in the early 20th century. Some very interesting reading on the subject... http://www.justice.gov/atr/public/eag/246374.htm

Maybe, we all need to dig a little deeper. Could Ricoh just be buying these accounts to keep dealers out, meaning once they are the incumbent a dealer can't take the business away. I understand in this account they were the incumbant, however if they are willing to lose money (and I heard Ricoh lost a ton of money in the US this year), why not go out and buy all of the large accounts, fortune accounts and leave the scraps for the dealers? Mind you, this is also happening with KM, Sharp,...

Specifically because protectionist laws setup in (I believe) the thirties prohibit auto manufacturers from operating directly in most states. Or they would have done it. I don't think they seriously feared that no one would buy cars ("car manufacturers would have been out of business") if they'd had a direct model!

Jason H. Who buys a car fro GM or Ford? NO! You buy it from a Dealer, a LOCAL Dealer! Why because they have the Service, supports, and Parts Infrastructure LOCALLY!!!! Not in NJ or Atlanta or Ca. The Local dispatcher knows the difference between Gloucester and Worcester and KNOWS that they are NOT next to each other. They know the local weather, so why it may be a beautiful day in Atlanta where the _BS (Direct) Branch has it's dispatch we've got 3 feet of snow in New England. That's My $0.02...

Selling Copiers in the Seventies with Darrell Leven

Art Post ·
It was good to see Darrell Leven at the recent BTA National Event in New York City a few weeks ago. During one of the breaks we had the chance to chop it up a bit about the imaging industry. Where we started and how we go to where we are today. During that chat is when I found out that Darrell started selling copiers in the late seventies. I asked if he would mind contributing to our Selling Copiers in the Seventies blog. Here's Darrell! What year did you start in the industry and what was...

Bottom line, The copier manufacturers are in the business of manufacturing copiers. Dealers are in the business of selling copiers. Mfgs panic anytime they see their inventory exceed certain levels and do all they can to continue manufacturing at consistant levels. When inventory exceeds preset levels, what do they do? they seek other methods of distribution to move equipment. Look at car manufacturing in the US, they will offer all kinds of incentives to their current dealers to move...

Here is some ammo for you guys, tell your customer this: Did you buy your last or any car directly from Ford/GM/Chrysler/Honda/Toyota etc? They didn't buy from the manufacturer becuase the manufacturer doesn't provide local support, a person you can go back to when problems arise, etc. This is the same with copiers/MFP's. The maufacturers don't have the seasoned technicians or sales reps to handle issues. Most times the manufacturer turns over people so quickly that you might only have the...

Jason R, Good point on the Volt. It would help on lower our dependence on foreing oil. However, would not a hybrid from say Ford like a fusion not accomplish the same thing. To me it looks like the Federal Government just helping to prop up GM which they own a large piece of. The appearance of a conflict of interest is just too big. Another reason that the government should not own the means of production.

I apologize, I can see how what I posted could be interpreted that way and that wasn't what I intended. As far as the coal burning cars, that is certainly something that needs to be addressed, but remember that the amount of energy produced by Wind and Solar doubled under Obama, so that is changing. As as far as the point about electric cars not being worth the investment (the higher cost isn't off-set by the savings on fuel) that is actually true, and something I've pointed out to my...
