No, Art. You're spot on. I haven't had many jobs outside the industry, but the majority of the old guard is so proud of the way they've always done it & receives so much validation from other dealers with the same mentality (via BTA, CDA, SDG, et al) that they often refuse to admit the need to change until it's practically too late. There are ideas & concepts that I brought up 3-5 years ago that were considered to be "interesting but not really necessary" that we're suddenly latching...

Re: "What is" Section 179

Art Post (Guest) ·
Leasing and Section 179 Did you know that your company can lease equipment and still take full advantage of the Section 179 deduction? In fact, leasing equipment and/or software with the Section 179 deduction in mind is a preferred financial strategy for many businesses, as it can significantly help with not only cash flow, but with profits as well. Non-Tax | Capital Lease The main benefit of a non-tax capital lease is that you can still take full advantage of the Section 179 Deduction, yet...

On Wednesday evening Oki hosted the evening reception @ Hiltons Signature Island. Food, drinks and networking, at this time I also had to the chance to meet Greg Walters (Death of the Copier) and now the newly elected President of the MPSA. the turn out was fantastic! There were more than 30 vendors and no vendors that were addressing managing the print stream. Jim D from Muratec asked itf Kyocera was buying Sharp! It brought a great roar from the crowd and Nori only stated "that's the rumor" and he chuckled and said nothing more. From what I learned at the BTA East Grand Slam event in Rye Brook, NY on 10/3/12, Ricoh will not adopt this strategy in the U.S. However, they are preparing the RBS locations to pursue Managed IT Services in certain markets. They have no intent to offer any type of offer to Ricoh Dealers, like XEROX has with ACS and Konica Minolta has with All Covered.

(Really short version) Once upon a time...back in the day a dealer could get an exclusive for a market. Here we are today. .... The End...

BTA says that they have yet to hear of a single case going to court. If that's true, it is nothing but a fishing expedition with no intent to ever follow-through with a lawsuit. That having been said, the last thing that any salesrep should do is to advise a customer to disregard. If there ever is litigation, you have just needlessly inserted yourself into the equation.

You might want to consider comparing them to Okidata's program. They are really going after BTA channel distribution and have some great programs making it easy i.e. no parts inventory, everything can be overnighted at their expense, 30-day free no-obligation trials for any prospect, Unique model numbers from retail distribution making it impossible to buy the BTA model off the internet, uniquely keyed supplies to make it difficult to buy supplies from anyone but you, no service training...

Re: How many prospects are in your territory?

Old Glory ·
If that number of businesses includes resturants and retail, you have a tough row to hoe my friend. Really, number of businesses is a poorer way of gauging one territory vs another than number of employees. However, the only "accurate" way is to use the BEQI (pr. becky) Index. That stands for Business Equipment Quota Index which is a market quota index for B&W and Color MFP's, B&W and color printers, and Fax's. It makes it possible to compare different territories b county, metro...

Frankly, the size of the territory is a little misleading. I know that when I was managing for Minolta Business Solutions, we developed territories based on MIF. At the time I believe BTA standards were 150 MIF and so we set it up that way. Otherwise, how can a rep possibly put food on the table?

Re: Fair Comission Plans

Just to give you an idea of the kind of variation there is, I went to the BTA compensation Survey of 2007. According to their survey, the median compaensation for a salesrep with 6+ years experience was $127,500/yr with a maximum of $422,377 for a rep in the West vs. $54,000/yr. and $104,000 for a rep in the Southeast. There is a significant difference in the cost of living which effects both the employee and the employer and therefore also effects compensation.

I have seen an early version of this unit at the Samsung Canada head office and it does look reasonable. The DF is not going to be as heavy duty as the copier based products, but for many offices this is not an issue unless they do a lot of scanning. The user interface reminds me of the touch screen on the Lexmark MFP printer based products and is extremely simple looking. This will appeal to a lot of purchasing type buyers. This is going to be a price led product. I know the guy that...

Re: The Samsung to HP Transition.

We did a HP webinar last week on the transition and it seems to me that HP doesn't have a clue how BTA copier dealers operate. I think they think BTA dealers are going to sell HP branded service packs and then chase reimbursements for service calls and parts from HP. If that is the model they plan on having us dealers use they will fall flat on their faces.

I think understanding how buyer's habits have changed & the amount of research they do online before agreeing to a meeting with prospective vendors is important, because the way dealers market to companies in their target market needs to change. Traditionally, dealers (regardless of size) have relied solely on salespeople canvassing or cold calling on the telephone to target prospective customers with little focus on company-supported marketing. Instead of content about our industry (they don't care) they need content that connects with the questions/problems they are facing. Then we can make the bridge to our products/services/solutions. Do you have any stories that you can share about how the buying process has changed? Originally Posted by txeagle24: I think understanding how buyer's habits...

I saw the A4 device and a picture of the A3 device at the BTA South East event in Orlando last week. I believe A4 device had a US MSRP price of $2,400. It also included enough ink for 75,000 pages of combined black & color. Cool looking unit, however the bags of ink are huge and a little scary. Would hate to see one of those break in the office.

Interesting to see if this system will pan out. Note the "buns" that are on each side of the system. On each side there are two huge bags of ink. Kinda reminds me of Princess Leia hair style!

Re: Telemarketing & The Person with the BAD Attitude!

I agree to a certain extent, Art, but at the same time, our industry has a deservedly bad reputation for being overly-persistent in efforts to reach prospects. The way in which people evaluate products, services, vendors, etc. has completely changed due to the wealth of information that is available online. Many buyers now want to know what they want (especially in up & down the street accounts) before they ever agree to talk to a salesperson. There are only so many hours in a day, &...
