Just a short update in reference to the account I was speaking about. The IG came back with many additional questions today, asking if the cost per page could be lowered, the annual cost of the maintenance agreement, and the price of the system. I stated NO on all accounts. We had started with a 25ppm color A3 device and then moved to an A4 color device. They were not even happy with that price. In addition when they received all of the no's they asked about pre-owned or used. I then stated,...

Blunder #9: They don’t follow through. What they do: After the deal has gone through, they don’t bother to make certain that the customer is delighted. Why they do it: They feel that they are “too busy” working on new accounts and developing new business. What happens: The reps find that the key to success in sales — repeat business — never really develops because the customers fell that the rep doesn’t really care. As a result, the rep is constantly forced to develop new contacts and new...

Yes, I agree, we only picked up the Sammies for monochrome no color, we've stuck with Ricoh for that. I just hoping Ricoh doesn't screw it up with higher cpp than the A3 color machines.....something is telling me that the A4 color will be higher, however I hope I'm wrong. If A4 color price is higher than A3 color, that leaves the door open for someone to develop a color A4 with A3 cpp pricing.

Hi Art, I agree. Ricoh needs an entry level 4 D/min system. I have always thought Ricoh should take thier gel sprinter technology and develop a plotter around it, instead they rely on Epson to fill this void. They seem ready to concede the 4 d market to Oce, Kip and the plotter cometitors. I wonder if it is the aftermarket that drives the decision. With a 4 D-Size per minute you are generating less clicks and less aftermarket revenue. Perhaps they want use limited dollars to develope higher...

Measuring copier performance is not as simple as who has the fastest gigahertz processor. A lot of buyers do, however, try to evaluate a copier like a PC and think that bigger, faster or more must be better. Some copier vendors like Toshiba develop specialized Systems on a Chip (SOC) which replace multiple electronic components onto a single chip that is specialized for the tasks required of a MFP. SOCs can produce better system performance than an off the shelf PC processor of faster...

Toshiba seems to be taking the position of developing customized processors that are optimized for MFPs. The benefit is much smaller size, faster processing (measured by quicker FCOT) and lower power consumption. Many manufacturers use "off the shelf" PC processors due to lower cost and less complicated to develop. Xerox commonly convinces buyers to include the spec, "must have a minimum of a 1.2 Ghz processor" for their Black only copiers as a "knock-out" feature. The MFP industry will...

It's easy to be a naysayer... so here I go. The Paperless office was first predicted in 1976 and was said to be inevitable within the next 10 years. Even if Art is right and we do develop a Kindle-like replacement for paper, I don't see it taking on any great marketshare in the next 20 years. I do think our industry is in a decline, I do think the copier will eventually disappear (or at least drop to minimal levels). I just haven't seen our replacement yet.

Re: Can I Copy Mixed Sized Documents on a Copier?

I disagree. Most law firms and many insurance companies still have a commonly re-ocurring need for mixed size originals. I am currently working with one European shipping company based in NA that wants to do do mixed size originals with a mix of A3 and A4 documents. I say it cannot be done as the paper is all of different widths. I am hoping that my unscrupoulous competitive vendors will admit to the same..... not likely!!! They want the sale today! Please advise.

A3 (11 x 17) and A4 (8 1/2 x 11) can be run at the same time with auto paper select making what you put in what you get out using mixed-originals and the mixed originals setting. The sizes you mention are European, but I'm sure they will work. As long as it's a standard document size it should work.

Re: Can I Copy Mixed Sized Documents on a Copier?

Sorry, I meant to say a mix of A4 and Legal size documents. I agree most copiers should be able to do mixed size originals with a combo of A3/A4 and Letter-R/Legal. The problem I am having and I do not think it can be done is one of a mix of A4 and legal mixing North American and European sized paper in the same document. This is because the two paper sizes are of different widths.
