It would seem that it all depends on where you structure your profitability. Since Ricoh is a Japanese manufacturer and sells its product to the US Ricoh company and then US Ricoh sells it to a dealer or direct, the profits can be structured to be very little if any in the US and very profitable in Japan. Something to think about as well, adding to what was mentioned by Mega. The Japanese division is making the bulk of their profits on the manufacturing of toner. That is the money tree for them. They sell to Ricoh USA and they work through their channels to distribute the boxes. The MP1515, 161, 171 are incredible engines, they just run and run without a hicup, I have a few of these that are running 3-5K every month and one was just traded in that had over 200K on the meter. It's not a money maker for the sales person, however it fills the gap when you are replacing a fleet and need a few lv devices that can print, scan, copy and fax. They do keep on truckin', I'll give you that. With the big push to MPS, however, customers are looking to move to more of a distributed printing model instead of centralizing on a few big MFP's. Additionally, MPS has forced everyone to learn how to service HP devices if they didn't already, & anyone can pick up faster HP A4 desktops from Tech Data, & the CPP will be very comparable. Most of the copiers we sell are assembled in Europe, but the parts come from China, Japan etc. So if the quake is going to have an impact on our sale then it probably won’t happen until (maybe) this summer... MP C toner is produced in Japan and bottled in US (according to the package) That could be an issue if the toner factories are affected

Some of us take the weekend off I'd be shocked if there is *no* impact, but I don't think it will be a massive impact either. I know Ricoh has some large facilities in japan, but I believe they have diversified to other countries enough that our supply may be strained but not strangled.

Toshiba HQ Bldg. in Tokyo is designed to resist earthquakes. Employees actually felt sea sick on the upper floors as the building gently swayed back and forth absorbing the shock waves. Toshiba manages 17 of 55 nuclear reactors in Japan including at least two of the reactors at the stricken Fukushima plant. The reactors are all made by GE Version 1, which is an old design. I think the title is a rosey picture, however there are many problems other than the manufacturing plant such as damaged shipping port in Sendai, road infrastructure, and still rolling black outs. Japan does not have the network of roads that we have here in the USA. Toner is still a big issue, and I don't believe what the Japanese government is telling.

Sharp is still in. They are under-distributed and I'm sure Japan is dissatisfied with this so I would not be surprised to see some changes, but Sharp is still invested in printing and these changes will probably be intended to drive growth, not just cut costs. Just as I am sure you have heard there are many Japan based manufacturers that have been affected by the earthquake. This is quickly turning around but will take some time. You have to allow for some leeway time to compensate. But many people seem to be very understanding and know others are in the same boat.

At one point I would have thought Kip would be a good buy for Canon. I have heard that they share or at least did share some manufacturing space in Japan. Kip is also a monocomponent system, much like Canon. However, now that Canon has Oce, Kip might be less attractive. I would like to see Ricoh buy them. Kip has a great wide format line. They suffer from not being diversified at all in thier product line.

The root cause of the feud is a couple of very small uninhabited islands off the coast of Japan. Both countries want to claim sovereignty. The value is in the rich fishing grounds and possible oil underneath the sea. Panasonic has already closed at least one plant in China as a direct result. We can only hope this does not impact the MFP industry.

We have a 40-system install of Global Scan and the need for training is minimal for the Ricoh reps and the end-user. Global Scan has fewer options for customizing a scanned document compared to Scanrouter Lite or Pro. Also, the options for sending are found in one spot and not broken out into several tabs.
