Re: A Couple of True & Not So True Humerous Copier Incidents
On a cold call I stopped in at a doctors office. The Office Manager was so glad to see me. She said that she was having fax issues and every time they received a fax it jammed. I told her I wasn't a tech but I would take a look. She escorted me to the fax and I looked down to see some questionably cheap paper. I simply asked if she had tried changing paper. She said "I don't have any control of the paper the hospital sends when they fax me." OooooK. She obviously didn't understand the...

Re: 57 Days of Selling "Day 44"
Love it Art! I had a day of running around with a networking luncheon followed by a training for a new device that I sold earlier in the month and stole from Sharp. I was extremely late to the party with this deal but they already had a canon that was very old and decided they wanted another canon and on top of that wanted someone to deal with local over Sharp and Ricoh direct. Then I was walking into the grocery store on the way home and got a call from a person I quoted a machine to about...

Re: Will outside Sales Rep's go away?
I’m a little late to this party but had the thread open since it was posted. As a 35 year old i straddle the “millennial” and old school gap (in my opinion haha). There is value of ordering things online that can be commonly used or even basic electronics. But if it’s anything above basic, I still believe talking to someone even if on the phone, pays dividends. We recently bought a new vehicle for my wife and explored for weeks online our options, the new vehicles options, what the price...

Re: Will outside Sales Rep's go away?
I'll chime in. Like TML I'm in my early 30's and have been selling copy hardware for nearly 10 years. I think good sales people as a whole are quickly becoming scarce. Millennials don't seem to like to interact with others if they don't have to and as most "print" decisions move to IT, online buying is already what they know. Overall it is a convenience factor, they don't have to submit a form to a website and wait a couple days for salesperson to try and up-sell them to an A3 MFP. They...

Actually there was something that I didn't even think of, when we're making phone calls, we are actually conducting "disruptive marketing", gee, never thought about it that way. I'll be posting the power point to the "clips" section of the our site either tonight or tomorrow. I did enjoy the presentation.

Canon’s 8.60 euros-a-share offer “significantly undervalues” Oce’s assets, and Orbis doesn’t want to sell its stake of about 10 percent at that price, the Bermuda-based manager of $20 billion in assets said in a...

I think the liability enters in when the customer is never informed that the machine is storing copies, and then later the information shows up in a damaging fashion. In that case, I think a Jury would be empathetic to a customer who says "he never told me it was storing those documents". Let's pretend I sell cell phones. I sell you a phone, and you use it for 2 years. At the end of your contract, you turn the phone back in to me. I didn't mention to you that the phone records every...

Basically your phone is sending the file to a PC or server that is running google chrome and is signed into your google account. You'd need to install and set up chrome on said PC/server as well as the cloud printing service and then download a. Cloud print app on your phone or tablet. You open the app and choose a file to print.

Mid Sized Dealer. Sad but true, we eat it the majority of the time. We give it away. I personally spend about 5 hours a week on the phone doing IT tech support or on web-ex webbed into customer's PCs fixing IT issues instead of selling equipment. Its frustrating but we've never found the right place to draw the line between being the nice guy and when to charge the customer without upsetting them.

Re: Q. How does your company handle networking charges?
On average, business computers are replaced every 5 years. That means (on average) 20% of all computers are replaced each year. If you did NOT charge for reinstalling drivers, you would need to employ someone (or several someones) full-time to drive around reinstalling print drivers on every client's computer they just replaced. It seems those customers most unwilling to pay are also those most unable to accomplish simple tasks such as reinstalling a print driver on their own. Funny story:...

Re: Sales Commission Comp Package
What makes a survey such as this so difficult are the variables. I want to say to the "newbees" out there that you can't take survey results such as this and determine anything when comparing to your situation. Variables such as GP for instance. Most are not paid from true dealer cost but from a cost plus formula that varies. I may get a high % commission on GP but cost starts at dealer cost plus 20% where someone else may have a low commission but cost begins at dealer cost plus 5%. What...

Re: Managed Network Services discussion
Very valid point if a copier company is trying to manage networks with their core people. I've given this Peter Drucker quote before, "Every company needs to prepare for the total abandonment of everything that it does." This is probably no truer anywhere else than it is with our industry. I am convinced that we must expand our sources of revenue or we will cease to exist within 10 years. We have a customer base that we see on a regular basis which gives us the chance to market additional...

HP is the only company that tried morphing from a hardware company (i.e. Printers) into network services and they are failing miserably their printers and cartridges are all that are keeping them afloat!

When Ed Schmid was running eCopy they had the best pre & post sales support in the industry. You could call an 800 # while onsite and get someone to answer the phone who actually knew the product better than you did. Those were the days when eCopy was a Canon only product. But Canon did not buy a controlling interest in eCopy so when their contract ran out, eCopy opened up to all copier manufacturers, and their support became poor, the rapid expansion overwhelmed them. If you're looking for CRM support then I suggest you find another dealer that is using a CRM program, your old school dealer will not last much longer. Yes...all this "you have to provide solutions" talk is all fine and good but it's still a numbers game. However, you have to make each call effective by getting information that will help you someday get in the door. What they have (or who they call for service should tell you what they have), whether they own or lease, are they 100% satisfied, and who makes the decisions. Your questions can't come across as an interrogation or you won't get any info from the receptionist. But if you are...

Heck you should get 50 that qualify as an opportunity if not more, just depends on when". Personally I made over 50 calls today,15 emails to prospects, returned 4 calls, set 3 appointments, however zero opportunities. I believe an...
