Something to think about as well, adding to what was mentioned by Mega. The Japanese division is making the bulk of their profits on the manufacturing of toner. That is the money tree for them. They sell to Ricoh USA and they work through their channels to distribute the boxes. The ultimate goal is to “place the box” Ricoh USA makes their overhead by the profit on the box moving it to the Dealer and other channels. Yes, it's true, I was a client of the very dealership that I came to work for. You're not going to like what I have to say because you're sales reps and you trained to think a certain way. Please, for once, listen with an open mind to someone with experience being on the other side of the proposal. Ponder it, don't spin it. Most buyers don't care one bit what brand of...

Re: JOINT STATEMENT BY SHARP ELECTRONICS CORPORATION AND EDWARD MCLAUGHLIN
Well who knows what will happen in five years. There is no evidence to suggest that the industry will not keep consolidating. My point was, I do not believe Sharp is in the process of killing this part of its business. I feel like they are still trying to grow it. Plus if there was ever a time to freeze direct branch expansion it was 2008-2011.

Re: JOINT STATEMENT BY SHARP ELECTRONICS CORPORATION AND EDWARD MCLAUGHLIN
I agree with almost all of everyone's statements. The truth is its just going to get harder for each of the second tier guys to grow and succeed and considering that Sharp, Kyocera, and Toshiba all have plenty of options outside of printing it would not be shocking to hear if some of them left or sold-out in the next five years. However, the feeling I get is that each of them still has some fight left and although they all face some headwinds none are actively working on their exit strategy.

Re: Ricoh Loses another Top Exec
Your comments above demonstrate the frustration that many RFG (Ricoh / SAVIN / Lanier) Dealers are feeling, which began when Ricoh acquired IKON. Since then, many Independent Dealers have picked up another Product Line, or bolstered their business with the other Vendor(s) they were already carrying. Ricoh is simply not stable, especially for Independent Dealers that sell Ricoh / Savin / Lanier. Yet, even the IKON / RBS direct side is faltering and the musical chairs amongst 'leadership' will...

You guessed correctly! Now that yet another 'IKON' guy has been named the Dealer Division VP for Ricoh, will it result in a final nail in the coffin for Ricoh's Dealer channel? Jim Corridi is the infamous Ricoh employye that managed the large IKON business before Ricoh acquired the GIANT. It was Corriddi who helped IKON grow their business to 46% of Ricoh's total revenues at one point, which harmed may RFG Dealers during the process. Re: Would You Loan this company Money?
Hi Art, I agree. Ricoh needs an entry level 4 D/min system. I have always thought Ricoh should take thier gel sprinter technology and develop a plotter around it, instead they rely on Epson to fill this void. They seem ready to concede the 4 d market to Oce, Kip and the plotter cometitors. I wonder if it is the aftermarket that drives the decision. With a 4 D-Size per minute you are generating less clicks and less aftermarket revenue. Perhaps they want use limited dollars to develope higher...

Re: Transform Global 2012
Wow. OK, I've never seen a study that didn't CLEARLY show total US print declining every single year since the 1990's. An account can still grow, of course, and you could be fortunate and have a mix of accounts that grow. But just looking at office paper shipments shows a constant decline every year. I think we're right at the stage where 50%+ of workers will never print until they have to "take something to the old man for approval". They'll just never have developed the habit of printing,...

Re: Unit Bonus
Dean, Give your reps substantial bonus potential for growing the aftermarket revenue in their territory. That will get them focused on trying to find MPS opportunities, contracts on printers outside MPS engagements, IT services opportunities and the like. You know service is much more profitable than hardware but will take longer to grow the top line. Box bonuses may be a good promotion for a quarter but would not be a constant area of focus.

Re: Service & Supplies Residual
Any company that isn't giving lucrative compensation for service revenue is completely missing the boat. Even the best hardware margins come nowhere close to service margins, even when you factor in manufacturer rebates. Whether they are paid out up front or on a residual basis, companies must pay substantial commissions on aftermarket regardless of whether it comes from MFPs, printers or network services if they want to grow their businesses in the direction our industry is heading toward.

I don't think it's appropriate to view the ComDoc acquisition as somehow counter to the spirit of the 3,000 jobs eliminated by Xerox. Xerox is prudent to eliminate positions that efficiency has made unnecessary, and to spend funds to grow the business by acquisition. I cut the grass in my front yard and water the vegetables in the back, but that is not an inconsistent strategy.

On the topic of servicing aged equipment, the manufacturers have to guarantee availability for 7 years after a model has been discontinued, you end up with machines that are 9-10 years old. If the volume is moderate, & you have been getting annual service increases, these can become very profitable machines, especially if you use some aftermarket parts from Katun and like. As our industry becomes more focused on recurring revenue & machines continue to become more reliable, older...

It doesn't matter whether it comes from a traditional service agreement, an MPS (does just mean printers) agreement or Managed IT Services agreement. It should all be paid a residual. That aligns how our clients pay us, what ownership says their focus is and how we are compensated. A lot of owners are afraid that reps will grow recurring commissions to the point...
