We had an e-mail from the Virginia State Bar's ethics guru, Jim McCauley, asking about an article he had read about how copiers can be gold mines for identity thieves. Indeed they can. Jim asked John to comment on the issue for a piece Jim is writing. As always, John's information is valuable and generally unknown to many...

Re: Who Will Be #1 in Market Share for 2009?
Yes, Ricoh (with IKON, RBS, SAVIN, LANIER) still holds the #1 position as of end 2010 Q2 (April through end June 2010). Yet, they are down -18% (in terms of Units) as compared to the same time period last year (2009).

Re: The Effect Currency Evaluations have on the MFP industry
Toshiba recently revealed that it actually profited from the strengthening of the yen that took place during the first half of its fiscal year through September. The company has apparently moved much of its manufacturing and product sourcing outside of Japan since 2009, resulting in the yen's rise positively impacting its earnings. Toshiba made 48 percent of its products in Japan between April to September 2009 and bought 45 percent of its components from Japan-based suppliers. By the same...

Dollar Hits All-Time Low vs Yen, Falls Below 78 The dollar sharply extended its losses versus the yen to trade below 78 in late New York trading on Wednesday amid concerns over a nuclear crisis in Japan. The dollar [JPY=X 77.35 -3.38 (-4.19%) ] hit as low as 77.60 yen on trading platform EBS. The previous record low was 79.75 yen set in April 1995. Traders are nervously watching whether the Bank of Japan will intervene in the currency market to stem yen gains. A stronger currency makes...

Re: Japan Crisis
Hi Art, Hope below help you understand the situation. This information came from industry analysts. OEMs Canon: Some plants are still not operational. They are facing serious shortage of Polyester from Kao. Biggest damage for MFP production is aspheric lens production at Utsunomiya plant. This is a key component for their MFPs, and recovery may take months. Tohoku Ricoh: Some of the facilities restarted operation, but not for chemical toner. Also finisher (for MFP/POD) assembly lines are...

Re: Tohoku Earthquake Wreaks Havoc on Printer Industry Supply Chain
This was an article from the NY times over the weekend! SHIBATA-MACHI, Japan — When the ground shook violently on the afternoon of March 11, the ceiling collapsed in part of the huge Ricoh copier factory here, exposing the vents and wires above. The offices at the Ricoh plant near Sendai are still in disrepair; workers have focused on restoring the factory and production. The ceiling is still not fixed. But employees are back at their posts, working under temporary lighting and wearing hard...

Re: Copier Compensation Plans
This was emailed to me from a P4P'er who wishes to remain anonymous. Art, This past April I had the opportunity to leave the industry but I have kept an eye on it since then. This topic definitely perked my interest because I feel like I was both the beneficiary and victim of a Gross Profit Comp Plan at my last gig. I have been on both sides of this topic, Revenue & GP plans, and I never made more than $51K in a given year and yet I was always 100% of plan. My final year under this GP...

Re: New A3 23, 28 and 33 ppm Models available in Europe
That's a pretty bold statement. Do you have any proof that this is something that is going to take place??? As a Lanier guy I don't necessarily think it would be a bad thing by the way.

Re: Canon, Oce launch jointly developed printers
This is old news. There is nothing on the market that competes with this direct press or copypress technology. The engineering behind these is phenomenal. This is the ONLY product in the history of BLI to receive a perfect 5 star rating for image quality. These have been out in the US since March-April. They are selling like hotcakes with a guarantee on the VP110 of 10yrs or 100 million impressions up to VP135 10yrs or 1 billion impressions. I just installed one about a week ago and it has...

Re: Windows 8 Compatability
FYI. To be technical, Windows 8 introduces SMB V3, improving security features among other things. http://www.windowsecurity.com/...SMB-Connections.html Although supposedly backwards compatible with SMB V1 & V2 found on most current MFPs, the transition is not quite as seamless as Microsoft hoped for. SMB V3 will likely require firmware updates from all of the copier manufacturers to be compatible. I have no idea on the Universal Print drivers until you try them. It is only a short time...

Re: Punch Unit Question
The only information I have I got from P4P Hotel. Under the "Announcements" Topic, Ted has posted a Ricoh's Rollout Schedule for January-April 2003. In that it says the 1085 is being replaced with the 1090 and under "New Hardware Options" it says it will have GBC Online Punch, and choice of 6 replaceable customer diesets which I am guessing are the punch units.

Re: 1060 v Minolta Di551/Konica 7155 need help!
We are a Konica and Ricoh dealer and I am familiar with both products (moreso the Ricoh). They are both good machines, but the 1060 software is far better in most respects: Scanning Konica scans to the hard drive on the controller and then you retrieve it from the "box" with a piece of software called ScanTrip, 25.00 per seat. You have to know which box to pull the scan from. It's what I would call pull scanning. ScanTrip can be set to poll the machine periodicaly to see if there is anything...

Re: Printer Kit on 1060/1075
You must add 128 MB. The mainframe comes with 128, but the Printer Kit OR the Printer/Scanner Kit require 256. That means we must add 128. Otherwise all else is fine with what you put in your topic. Make sure you are using DMAP dated 8 April 2003 or later, the Printer/Scanner Kit cost came down to the cost of the Printer Only Kit and the Printer only kit is no longer listed.

RUMOR has it that Ricoh will change the name of the company to IKON Americas Corporation, effective August 1, 2009. RBS will fold into IKON, with several offices closing across the country. This new IKON direct organization will be the only distribution channel selling 'Ricoh' brand products, while the remaining "strong" Independent Dealers can sell Lanier and Savin (for a limited time) at an approximate 20% higher price than IKON will enjoy. RFG Dual Line Dealers will be requested to drop...
