I am seeing more of that with wide format recently and I am not sure why. Most of what I have seen has been where they are running the same volume as before but they just don't want to have a machine anymore so they outsource it and it doesn't seem to matter if the machine was leased to them for a $1 a month they still wouldn't do it.

Interesting thoughts, Thank you p4p. I have sold Canon for 20+ years. Many years ago they listed the imageClass line (MFP's under 2,500 dollars) and the entire scanning line and Wide Format line. As such I stopped selling those products as I have always been compensated on hardware gross profit and there was none. In 10 years there WILL be outside sales reps, and many of them will be the committed, true professionals of today. The E-Commence platform have changed our business and how we do it. For example gone are the days when you could duck into a 15 story office building and cold call. They are never going to get their act together. I spoke with Jim Corridi at the CDA meeting several months ago and he told me big things were coming down the pipeline very soon because he agreed it would be hard to upgrade 3406WD systems with a 3406WD system. He also, however, acted like the Epson was going to be the latest and greatest thing for all of us that sell wide format. Not sure why since we don't typically mess with the ink jet machines. Jason, Talk to KIP again I have never heard of KIP asking dealers to stock machines(maybe one for the demo floor). Plus KIP is releasing the new 800 series next month and these machines look like they should be good sellers. 8 full color "D"s per minute and 10K less that the Oce colorwave. We sell or have sold all the major lines of wide format, KIP, Oce, Ricoh, even going back to Xerox. All our sales reps and techs prefer the KIPs. GR

Wide Format is in a big transition right now, I know KIP is no longer going to be putting any R&D into monochrome printing anymore. Its all color from this point forward, I know Oce (or CSA) is thinking the same way. I can't speak for Ricoh but at this point why would you put any money into it. Ink jet is not the answer ether so the Epson deal in not going to get you into too many doors. If the KIP 800 series is priced right (somewhere in the $25K-30K area) a lot of them will be going...

The Epson argument has been going on for years. I brought one product in as a complement product and direct print production sales fought for Epson devices as part of the portfolio. I wouldn't allow it. However, with Vellek in charge of all product marketing, a lot changed. Overall profitability on Epson to Ricoh is about 7-9%. Plus there is no way to lock a customer into a toner inclusive deal when they could by it anywhere on the web. Losing proposition for Ricoh, winning for Epson. I ran...

We don't sell the Epson, I do hear that many Ricoh wide format dealers are looking to change. The W3602 is due out something this spring, Ricoh is waiting to exhaust inventories on the W3601. I have not sold a W3601 yet this year and believe I only sold a handful last year, I used to sell at least a dozen a year. The W3602 will have the GUI as the color systems and many of the same features, sad but the GUI and the MFP features will still put us way behind with the likes of KIP & Oce

1). The new e4508LP uses the heat of the fuser to decolorize the blue toner to clear. The seperate RD30 erasing device is still available and presents a few advantages. 2). There is an all inclusive cpc charge for the Erasable Blue toner. The cost per copy analysis suggests that if on a 60 month lease you do not expect the the customer to erase more than 210,000 pages (3,500 pages per month) you can forget the parts cost and charge the same cpc as for Black at around $0.010 per page with a decent profit. There is no charge to erase pages. A 3rd paper drawer would probably be useful. Letter/ Legal/ Erasable. The number of erased pages are recorded and displayed in the useful Paper Re-use Report which describes sheets of paper saved, CO2 saved and money saved. The Eco-MFP can erase pages at 17.5 sheets per minute.

So some clarification first. PaperCut absolutely does support Mac. In fact, it is the only cost recovery/print control solution that I know of that actually installs in an all Mac environment. (Server and Client) It also is the only solution I know of that installs in a Linux environment. So both of your issues are solved with PaperCut. I included the install guides for Mac and Linux to get you started.

So, the Oki or Teriostar 1040 is one page per minute faster than the Ricoh. Oki wants the user to replace the corona wire cartridge and the process cartridge. I believe the process cartridge is the drum. Now, the memories come back, if an end user scratches that drum, it's on the user to replace the drum which is going to be a very pricey item. when you load the bypass tray it will auto recognize the paper in a pop-up menu, and if you look closely there is a section near the bottom where it shows what a media is defaulted and a button that says “change “. This is where you would program in the media wait. I believe it would be heavy six, if you hit the details button on that screen you will see it by GSM The varnish would be questionable. Old Glory I agree!! Solutions take longer, I've been working on a secure print solution for almost 4 months. I'm lucky if the deal will top 40K and even luckier if I get the deal. I've tried to focus on higher end hardware and multiple units. The multiple units is tough because everyone is involved and margins are so so at best. MY only saving grace has been the wide format stuff.

I'm with Art. I think the A4 systems are in the market to stay and soon everyone will have them. Samsung will also have A3 systems within the next 18 months to be able to offer them with the A4's on bids and tenders. We shouldn't forget old HP when we have this discussion...they still collect more clicks in NA than any other manufacturer and they are seriously getting into the managed print business. they are typically user customized in the application. For example a law firm printing to an HP 4000, when they print a letter it's always in dup or triplicatel; right? So the program is set up when they select to print, a letter that they get: 1. a print on letterhead 2. a print on plain paper 3. a print on colored paper 4. an evnelope. I always run into this when replacing printers, because it never is configured to do the same thing, and i have like 30 legal secretaries wanting to kill...

Ouch, that's a tough one. If it's really a proprietary system, there's probably no chance of a converter being available. What's the actual file format? Does it save in an an autocad format? or HPGL? Secondly, why do you need it to be PDF? If it's for printing to a ricoh wide format, could they use a PDF print driver to drop the file into a folder for the Rioch to grab it from?

Jason -- no the goal it to print a version of an 11 x 17 drawing and scale down to a letter size document. My PCL and PS3 driver is not reading the lines on the drawing as an image. I posted for a colleague so who just joined so I am not sure of the file format, nor am I familiar w/ this application. 2nd part yes -- they could do that -- that was a quick work around that we did - but was unhappy with the amount of clicks that it had to go through. They have a CANON that does it no problem.

Here's part of the confusion, this is posted in the wrong forum. This forum is for Industry wide announcements. If you had it in the forum for Ricoh issues, that'd have told us more about what type of issue you were working on. RATIO is the company that makes the controllers/software for the Ricoh wide-format, so not an issue in this case.

GIntel did a good job of summarizing the list. It seems to be a good fit for Canon. They gain additional distribution in 32 countries, add what is arguably the BEST wide-format and production print engine producer and it only costs them $1.1B? Nice Job.

The growth is on the very high end and the very low end in the this business. I would tend to think that it's not long before the copier manufacturers attack the extreme high end in years to come. As being "GREEN" becomes ever more popular to save paper, I think copies, and print clicks will move downward, thus forcing the manufacturers to capture more high end placements.
