@fisher I agree almost completely, but to play devils advocate I will say that we are selling more desktop printers now than we ever have before. Mostly brother, as we became a partner a couple years ago. I think people are looking for reps to show them a better way than just buying another HP off amazon, but the rep still has to have a higher level conversation with the client...not just hey buy your printers from us.

I’m a little late to this party but had the thread open since it was posted. As a 35 year old i straddle the “millennial” and old school gap (in my opinion haha). There is value of ordering things online that can be commonly used or even basic electronics. But if it’s anything above basic, I still believe talking to someone even if on the phone, pays dividends. John, The PrintCopy Tool compares pretty favorably to Plotworks. I attached two documents to this post. The Product Support Guide lists differences between the two products. The PowerPoint has screen shots of all the settings in PrintCopy Tool. I hope this helps.

Hi, we sell Toshiba in the UK. The current colour range can run with a two tiered counter already. We used to sell the Kyocera range with this feature it seemed to be good and won us business, but lost us money in service. When colour costs are dropping to 4p, the percentage of toner from the 4p is getting less. So to breaking this down into 3 tiers could seem marginal. But let say you could offer 1.5p for 2% coverage then 2.5p for 2-5% coverage and then 4p for above, you have now lost out...

Maven , What I tell my customers and when I'm out with sales reps is it's all about getting things done in less steps. I'm in the legal vertical so time is money and everyone has an hourly billable. Right now here's the average user scan: 1.) User walks up to MFP and logs in 2.) Finds their name via LDAP or enters manually and then enters client and matter 3.) Selects Scan to email 4.) I have scheduled quite a few meetings via LinkedIn. Sometimes, it has been through InMail, but more times it has been the result of a client or prospect seeing something of interest that I posted and asking to schedule a time to discuss whatever that is.

JWS- Good luck getting your machine to count correctly! We went round and round with Ricoh and our rep about this. They swear it counts correctly, we know it doesn't. You are correct in that it can be application- dependent; some apps will click correctly, but Acrobat prints, when there are mixed originals, usually treat the whole job as color. So some clarification first. PaperCut absolutely does support Mac. In fact, it is the only cost recovery/print control solution that I know of that actually installs in an all Mac environment. (Server and Client) It also is the only solution I know of that installs in a Linux environment. So both of your issues are solved with PaperCut. I included the install guides for Mac and Linux to get you started.

So, the Oki or Teriostar 1040 is one page per minute faster than the Ricoh. Oki wants the user to replace the corona wire cartridge and the process cartridge. I believe the process cartridge is the drum. Now, the memories come back, if an end user scratches that drum, it's on the user to replace the drum which is going to be a very pricey item. If I was a business owner I would not want my peeps handling a part that has a cost of $1,500-$2,000. If they scratch it, it's on me to buy another,...

I'm with Art. I think the A4 systems are in the market to stay and soon everyone will have them. Samsung will also have A3 systems within the next 18 months to be able to offer them with the A4's on bids and tenders. We shouldn't forget old HP when we have this discussion...they still collect more clicks in NA than any other manufacturer and they are seriously getting into the managed print business. It seems to me it is going to come down to who is going to gaurantee the client the toner on...

Merlin -- you are absolutley right...like any business there are several costs. but you never know if a dealer had special terms with a their manufacturer to order x amount - or if they were trying to acheive a certain level to hit their quoata or win some award? Really hard to speculate on a business model which we don't know anything about. But the one thing that I do know is that - these idiots are everywhere..... Interesting approach to the sales process. Strikes me the next promo is for 10% below sticker price...of course unlike cars, manufacturers don't put a sticker price on MFP's to advise the public what the price is supposed to be. At this point we find the margin we are able to obtain on most sales of hardware barely covers the cost of sales for the product...any business profits come from services bundled around the hardware, either connectivity plans, support plans, supplies for colour etc.

Here’s a problem we run into in Maryland: The state does not charge personal property tax, but some (but not all) counties and even municipalities, do. Obviously, each county/municipality has its own tax rates. This happened to us a couple of years ago. We received a service call from a client who reported seeing little black lines on their copies. The culprit? A pair of false eyelashes. We still don't know how they got inside the machine!

I received a telephone help call from one of our clients who had a malfunction code on their new copier. To clear these malfunction codes it’s usually a case of opening the front door for a few seconds and then closing it again. I asked the client to do this and then come back to the telephone. Just installed the 9700 today at a client site today and it is amazing. Kicks out D size full color plots with full coverage in about 45 seconds, and they were beautiful. Love the flanges for the paper rolls in the fact that they are adjustable for either 2" or 3". Best part about the unit was the ease of setup and use of this system. Very happy to have this as part of the lineup I can offer, and not have to give my leads to my buddy who works for a competing large format dealership.

When we have a client that asks us to dispose of a printer/MFP, I know we have our delivery driver pick up the device to properly dispose of it, but I have no idea what happens from there.

Hey guys thanks for the 411. I have seen the duty cycles at 600K (2105) and 500K (2090). Interesting this is offset from the PM cycle of 350K for both. : ) I have a client with over 13 million on a 2105 (5.5 yrs old) and a 2090 w 4 million (3 yrs old). What is everyone's experience with machines after 5 or 10 million pages?

We sold two copiers recently to a Window & Door Manufacturer. One of the copiers had 4k clicks on it in less than a week so we thought we would have a good revenue stream. I have been thinking about these Label printers so I asked the client about how they use the ones that they already have. I was floored when the client told me that they plan to spend $100k this year on labels alone.

Some great points in this thread. In the end all of the main copier products do the same thing...they put toner on the paper, fuse it and offer a collection of ancillary tools which in many cases are more important (like scanning) than the copy function anymore. RATIO US is now OK'd to sell PLOTBASE software upgrades for all the Wide Format Models (470,240,480,2400/3600, 5100/7140) in addition to external controllers for those models as well. New website is www.ratio.US PLOTBASE 3.7.3 provides up to date PDF processing, full Windows 7 (server & client) OS support and other updated drivers. Same for PLOTBASE 5.5.3 which updates the MP W5100/7140 version.

I don't know what Ricoh's opinion would be on this (don't really care) but we accumulate licenses and then distribute them strategically. I sold a single license last week for $350 and charged an additional $150 for client PC install and limited training. Since we have no cost, my company counts it all as GP. I agree with fisher and old glory you got it going on, I'm gonna mention this to our people. For DeanW, we're not seeing any additional support issues once we've installed on the client, we too are staying away from the server install and yes they lose some of the automated features however in the intial appt, I don't talk about them, I talk about every thing that can be done on the PC.

There are a number of factors that impact start-up cost for MPS clients. In the traditional "copier" world, prior to putting machines under contract we would inspect them, perform service to bring it up to spec and bill the client. In MPS, we just put them under contract, so the start up cost can be virtually nothing or cost an arm and a leg depending on the condition of the machines that are being placed under an MPS Agreement. The MFP is already connected to the internet. The Cloud Print client for the PC connected to the MFP identifies the printers that are connected to that PC. As long as that PC is online, running Chrome & you are logged in to your Google account, you can select the document you want to print from the Cloud Print app on your mobile device, select the settings (this is still in beta), and it will send the print job to the printer to which you choose to print. heard of it...Xerox, partners...but I have not actually seen it... NewfieldIT out of London developed a software...I am still looking at it. But, why anyone wouldn't simply install it as part of their overall MpS is beyond me, if it works. Oh, and no need to inform the client - it should reduce the provider's cost...not the client's. Jason, You are absolutely right, it isn't the responsibility of the new dealer to wipe the Hard Drives of the old Dealers MFDs. And if it is a line that your dealership does not carry you couldn't restore it to working order after you did wipe the Hard Drives. Which would cause them more problems and cost if they return it ti their leasing company in non working order. But if you want to add value you do have the discussion with the new client and inform and advise them of their options. I...

We charge an inexpensive fee (1 hour labor) to format the hard drive, but if they want something more secure, we will remove the hard drive from the old machine and replace it with a new hard drive. For that, we charge the cost of the hard drive + labor and either destroy the old hard drive or return it to the client. That typically costs less than $500 and is easy to roll into a new deal. We've done this on Sharps, Canons, Toshibas, Kyoceras and Konica Minoltas. The hard drives are easy to...

We default every color device we install to black & white. Are we losing some revenue on CPP contracts as a result? Of course we are. Is this money the client would spend if they were not covered under a toner-inclusive agreement? No, because there would be no black and white documents that would accidentally use color toner. Here's something that might help someone keep from wasting a day like I did. I installed PPDM on a brand new Windows 7 64-bit with MSOffice Professional Plus 2010. Upon launching the Batch Manager in Omnipage 17 or whatever it is called for PPDM I would receive and error to the effect that there was no default mail client set up...this caused the program to hang and did not allow me to create the batch process I wanted to set up to scan a PDF and turn it into a Word document and a searchable...

I understand, we all know going up against direct operations is challenging especially down the street business. We sell both the Canon and the Ricoh. I am at $.01 per page on the Canon 1700 series. If this is a net new client why don't you match the price and see if this gets you the business?

GIntel, my pricing is the same for the entire series. We have net new client pricing which differs from current client pricing. From a low band of 3K per month at $.013 down to $.01 for over 15K for new clients. $.015 to $.013 for current clients. Doesn't matter what the hardware price is.

Joe.....sounds like Sharp1 is bias on the 453. I agree with sharp1 that the 453 is a nice unit. But doesn't any 45ppm unit run 5000-20,000/mo? That is the norm for that segment. I should know I worked for Sharp and sold these exact systems. But I have to say if you have an customer that is already not happy then you try to sell them a system with all those extra bells and whistles when they don't want or need then....well you are adding fuel to the fire. I just sold my first PaperCut installation. While I haven't been involved in a physical installation yet, I've seen PaperCut's WebEx presentation several times and I've yet to see any real differences in PaperCut vs. Print Audit (other than price). I'm not saying they don't exist, just saying I was fairly impressed with the features touted in the presentation (and obviously, so was the client that purchased the software). The software does have the behavior modification pop-ups you are referring to, and I'm told specialized scripts can be easily written to force almost any behavior. You would be correct in the difference from the Papercut NG version vs. the MF version. We have sold about a dozen variations and it is a great product that makes a lot of sense. We have implemented it with MPS and MF solutions and it helps us keep the competition out. It's also great with swipe cards (HID/Kastle, etc...). Good luck.

On the Lexmark XS658dfe you referenced, it cannot be ordered without a finisher. There is a 2nd pre-configured model (XS658dme) that delivers with a 4-bin mailbox, but I doubt many of those are sold. On the other hand, Ricoh's new SP5200 and their MP C300/C400 series have one version sold without a finisher (cannot be added later) and one that is pre-configured with a finisher. Of the Ricoh A4 units I have sold, I would say the majority of them have been the model with the finisher with the...

There are numerous brand names out there. I Use Print Audit/PCS Director. Papercut I hear is good. It depends on what is best for the client and what needs to be tracked. In addition, some of these have to reside on the PC and some on the print server.

If you're looking at the SP4310, this uses the same cartridge as the SP4100 & SP4110. I have a client with a mixed fleet for SP4100's, SP4110's and SP4310's, and we have been supplying them with MICR cartridges for several of these as part of their MPS Agreement for over 5 years. If memory serves me correctly, I remember that when Ricoh launched the SP4110 he stated that one of the benefits that it could run either regular toner or MICR.
