FYI. To be technical, Windows 8 introduces SMB V3, improving security features among other things. http://www.windowsecurity.com/...SMB-Connections.html Although supposedly backwards compatible with SMB V1 & V2 found on most current MFPs, the transition is not quite as seamless as Microsoft hoped for. SMB V3 will likely require firmware updates from all of the copier manufacturers to be compatible. I have no idea on the Universal Print drivers until you try them. It is only a short time...

POP3 is Post Office Protocol v3. It's a standard used only to retrieve mail. An alternative to POP3 is IMAP, the Internet Message Access Protocl is also a standard for retrieving mail. Whichever you setup for retrieval, you also need a sending protocol, which is normally SMTP the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. So you are typically setting up POP3 & SMTP, or IMAP & SMTP, with SMTP handling all the sending.

A good test is if it will scan to a current MAC which does not support SMB 1. The Samsungs have worked, and I believe the Konica Minoltas too. The Canon MFDs do not, not even the latest V3 IR-Advance MFDs. We need to add Authorized Send to support this. Vince

The side-by-side that Mr. Copy posted was for the MP C4500 SPF, which includes fax. The revised attachment shows the MP C4500 for a more apples-to-apples comparison. Please note that copy/scan/print are all standard on the Ricoh, while scanning is optional on the Xerox.

Attached is a customized ppd that needs to be loaded in addition to the current one. It will allow Mac users to send to the Document server (assuming they are on OSX). There are some limitations with this PPD, the filename must be input when installing the PPD, thus all files sent to the Document Server will have the same name ... if they are kept at the copier, then the user will have to change the name of the file at the copier.
