Re: A Few Copier Vignettes from the Late Eighties & Nineties
Art, You and I are from similar professional backgrounds and times. We started in 1980 selling Sharp and Juki typewriters. Everything sold near MSRP. Then the fax boom came and we caught that wave perfectly. We sold Ricoh thermal faxes for full list ($2995.00). The only issue was cash flow; we sold them faster than we could order and purchase them. Copier Maintenance agreements went from .022 up to .035 and did not include drums, developer, toner, fuser rollers or lamps! Also, like your...

Yup we have the same issues with cash flow. It was a great problem to have. The Hunt for Red October was a great book, even found the movie awesome too! Ty for the comment, we should connect for lunch one day

Re: NJ lease question
Art - As a general rule, when leasing to Muni/State Agency/Poly Subs, the customer can choose the lease structure that best fits their needs - Tax Exempt Muni Lease, standard $1.00 out, FMV lease agreement, Rental Agreement, etc. In New Jersey, tax exempt municipal leases and FMV are widely used. Based on my previous conversations with Muni leasing experts, leases cannot be longer than 5 years and all must include a fiscal funding/non-appropriation clause with the agreement. Technically each...

Re: The Death of Linkedin?
True story: I met a guy on the driving range.....an annoying sort of fellow. We chatted for a few minutes and I didn't think anything of it. Next day I get a request from him on LinkedIn. Not wanting to be rude I accepted. Within half an hour he called my office name dropping my name trying to get an appointment with the owner of my company to get a crack at our 401K business. With the owner of the company out of the office the call got put through to me.......talk about an awkward...

Re: The Death of Linkedin?
Cant blame the guy for trying. We all started with hitting the street at 8:30 to pound on doors and chase most anything that moved. The nature of Linked is a way to connect, but its tough when a request comes out of the blue.

Re: The Death of Linkedin?
LinkedIn is becoming the new Facebook. Useless posts by people and political crap all over it. When you do anything business related you are inundated with requests to connect followed 20 seconds later with some sales script about setting up a meeting. I still use it all the time but get annoyed by it daily.

Workflow is about process and information of which paper is just an element. There are unlimited opportunities to automate process and the movement of information through a business. Even if paper disappeared tomorrow workflow would still exist. Fear not young Jedi.

A Few Copier Vignettes from the Late Eighties & Nineties
The picture in the header showed our demo room back in either 1989 or 1990, might have even been 1991. As you can see by the photo Atlantic Office Systems (the first one in NJ) was Authorized for Adler Royal, Brother, and Tele VaxaFax (facsimile). Sometime later Adler Royal was purchased by Mita and the Adler Royal brand was changed to Copystar. I thoroughly hated the name Copystar because there was no brand recognition, at least with Adler Royal, our clients knew about Royal typewriters. We...

COVID19 "Remote Working" Day Sixteen of Sales
This blog will be one of the longer running blog series. NJ just locked down for another 30 days, that statement from the Governors Office came today. I follow the numbers on a daily basis but I'm somewhat concerned that more peeps will be out and about as the better weather...

Selling Copiers in the Seventies with Jack Carrol

Recent Marco Aquisition in New Jersey
In December 2019 Marco purchased Image Systems for business in Somerset, NJ. Many of us were surprised since the annual revenue was about 5 million (manta). Kind of small for a Marco purchase. In NJ there are Mega Dealers, and then the rest is well in the Image Systems size. Word on the street is that they will look to acquire 3-5 dealers in that 5 million range and then consolidate for one location. Again something I heard not gospel but it does make sense for the NJ market place

I Wouldn’t Buy a Fuji Xerox
July 2, 2018 FujiFilm is suing Xerox for a Billion dollars because Xerox backed out of the merger after one of the Xerox Board of Directors staged a rebellion. “ Fujifilm (also)…threatened to compete against Xerox Corp …if it failed to renew its technology agreement in 2021.” If you are unaware of the relationship between Fuji and Xerox, Fuji makes a large portion of Xerox’s line of Office equipment. I have never had a prospective customer tell me anything other than thank you for sharing the information. What I have had is people throw that companies stuff in the trash in front of me, or hand it to me and say thanks you made the decision easy. Usually if they are throwing it away I just tell them I will take it and dispose of it for them after I get the information I need off it.
