I agree, the PCL5 is better for older applications. However, at some point I feel like you have to go with the new stuff and see if you can make the switch...I've had fairly good luck up until now and when there is a problem (usually a medical office printing from practice management or EMR software that is older). Illegal media source simply means that the requested paper tray was not present on the device. Most likely the printer lost communication with a paper tray and rebooting the printer restored it. PCL5 will give a lot fewer errors (at the tradeoff of lesser image quality, some users won't notice or care).

mostly for scanned documents, what I;m thinking about is tickets that are printed and then signed for by the drivers, this would be for a landfill operation.

Emie: Keep in mind the cost of 4 part carbonless is very high, the ribbon cost of the ribbon cost of the dot matrix is high, noise of the printer, plus dot matrix printers always need to have print heads replaced. Someone would then need to seperate the invoices and tear off the sides. Dr. PCL5 maybe able to help

At the moment they're filing in file cabinets. We've started the conversation about Document management software but they're not at the commitment level yet. The client only has one location. Thanks Dr. PCL5 I'll look into FormJet enterprise.

Try switching pcl emualtion, meaning use the exisitng driver before you installed the Ricoh one. You may lose some functionality but it may work. Also try changing the driver (ricoh) to PCL5 or 6 and see what happens. Ask the software company if there is any infomation that may have to be downloaded to the Hard Drive. Art

More info...we can reproduce this problem from http://www.newyorklife.com/products/life-insurance/ When printing to a Savin C4040 (and others) using the PCL5 or 6 the print job either doesn't print and hangs at the MFP or on other products throws an SC899. This does not happen when using the PostScript driver. We have an HPLJ4000 and it prints fine. This has been reprocuced from IE8 and 9. This scenario does not fall within the relm of PCL5 (or variable data print) since we are already dealing with a rendered document (PDF). Unfortunately, Dr. PCL5 is not able to prescribe the magic pill.

I have not put a hard drive in any of the three of those units I have installed. I have not experienced the problem you describe. I would check the file they are trying to print. What kind of file? How big is the file? Are graphics or fonts embedded in the file? How? Then I would experiment with the different drivers available for the machine. PCL5 and PostScript. Do either of these give better results than PCL6? Definately do not use the universal drivers.

I have never seen this problem, but I just ran a test here on my machine, mind you I am using SmartNet Monitor for Client. I set up 2 separate user codes, restricted all printing access to the device using SmartNet for Admin and gave printing permissions to those two user codes only. You HAVE to lock down all functions and give individual permissions for some reason for it to count the prints properly. (This avoids prints to the "others" category also. I printed from 2 separate user accounts...

This in essence is an Equitrac solution. Print jobs can be captured utilizing the clients coding structure as well as copies. A PageCounter terminal is needed for each system to capture walk up copying. For print jobs, a code is entered for the client when the printer is selected. The information gathered can even be exported into the clients accounting and billing software.

I looked everywhere and I couldn't find it. I have started using the PCL6 exclusively because it seems to be the only driver that doesn't want to rotate collate everytime you print. I used to use the PCL5 until it began rotate collating everything resulting in paper type mismatches when letter is loaded in only 1 drawer. I wish they would keep things consistent.
