It was Friday a few minutes after 5PM went my cell rang from an existing client and yes I could have easily let the call go to voice mail.  With one day left in the month, having my quota made and it's a summer Friday night was enough to let the call pass.  Fifteen minutes later I had the verbal for the order with decent GP and the DM stated they will sign on Monday.

Good things happen to those that work hard!

Those are the questions I need to ask in order to help them win, for those more tenured I do get surprised when they don't know the answer.  Thus, this is my opportunity to teach them that "this is the way".

Ok, I was told today that there is no MSRP for the toner, however I was able to get dealer cost and confirmation that the stated yield is 21,500 pages. I'm going to double the price for the MSRP, thus the cost would or should be in the area of $187 per cartridge. I don't think the future is very bright for Ricoh. They continually lose their big dealers to global imaging and then add in all the problems with their business model. Buying market share at any and all costs is never going to be sustainable and they reallze that now, but they should have learned that years ago. The Japanese are their own worst enemy in business. Surprised no one has posted anything on this. Our company will advance a reps that have done an excellent job to the status of "sales supervisor". Not a manager yet, but it is the pre-curser to obtaining a sales managers position. The sales supervisor will go on calls, get an extra percentage on deals sold by the reps that are under them.

Re: Sales Rep Career Path

It is interesting that "some"brilliant sales people are not interested in a career path but rather in the financial rewards. These type of sales people are not interested in admin, managing and paperwork. In this case we as business owners and managers must look at rewarding these super stars instead of letting them go to the opposition. I agree with a career path for whose who want to move up the ladder. Take those ones and make them 1st a team leader and then later a sales manager with the

This Week in the Copier Industry Five Years Ago

Third Week of April 2017

Greg and I had a chat late on Good Friday. We spoke about how the industry has changed, the amount of good people (including sales reps) that we've lost in the last two plus years.  It was agreed that our future is not about copier and print devices but more about how we can learn more about our clients and ask business questions that will allow us to understand what's good and bad about their business.  More often than not understanding the client on a business level will enable us to provide options to their business and allow us to be a valued partner.

If you have a day packed full of appointments, it's difficult to "work" between sales calls because you don't have enough time between each appointment to dive into anything except responding to a couple of quick emails. But with social media, you can use thatin-between time to drive new business conversations and maintain productivity. Great reminder that we can always do something to Always Be Prospecting.

In Canada, you cannot enforce a non-compete. I would imagine it's similar in the US. The argument is that an employee's income is tied to skills and relationships that he or she gained while under employment. Whether you are a sales rep or a tech, you cannot take away an employee's ability to make money, even if it's in the same territory. Most OEM's will enforce a 6-12 month non-compete clause. There was quite a bit of chatter this week about leasing at the tactic that dealers will use.  Keep in mind it's not the leasing companies that drive the Evergreen clause, nor the small window of time for notification, and the annual escalator increase for the hardware and the service. These are all dealer demands with their private able leases.  Which brings me to "if a dealer was so confident with their support and service there would be no need for these times of clauses"

Don't forget that Epson just released their new A3 inkjet MFP. Very interested to see how that pans out as well! I can't tell you how many times I've lost a deal because a dealer "disguises" their a base amount of copies inside the lease payment. Customers are willing to pay more to not have to worry about monthly print usage and have a predictable monthly payment. This seems crazy at first, but then I thought about it and it's everywhere... This Week in the Copier Industry Five Years Ago

Second Week of March 2007

It is hard to stay upbeat today and especially after the two years that we've had. I can tell you one thing I remember from the 80's. That one thing is that companies will need to reduce costs yet again. It's not a matter of need or want, they will need to lower costs. Your job is to figure out how to make that happen.
That job can happen in many different ways. Reducing lease costs, maintenance costs, IT costs, or migrating services to the cloud, or even removing print servers for cloud printing. The opportunities are there, they just need to be found.

Price objections are common in sales -- primarily because most prospects have learned pushing back on cost will get them a discount. That makes it difficult to respond to a pricing objection if you don’t want to immediately lower your price. While discounting has its place in the sales process, being too discount-happy will destroy your margins and lower your product’s perceived value. This four-step process will help you overcome price objections: Step One: After the prospect has finished

This Week in the Copier Industry Five Years Ago

First Week of March 2017

Yes, it is the last month of the first quarter for 2022.  How the frack did we get here so quick?  Our weekends are nothing more than idle time that gets us to the end result.  The never ending cycle of sales quarters give us the feeling that time travels two to three times as fast as those in 9-5 jobs.  Personally I would not want this any another way because I get to call my shots every day.

The "E" size prints would exit to the front exit tray and then fall on the floor. There was not enough exit support area to hold the "E" size documents. Art Here is my two cents worth. What goes around comes around in this world. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later. If and when we get to the point of people totally taking out the human to human contact in the sales process, they will then begin to miss that same human to human contact, and start to look to regain it. Its my belief that we will begin to see that very soon in things like facebook. Its a great way to help stay in touch with people. But once people begin to use it to avoid each other

In your check list did you include, add the cost of the initial toner and developer to set up the copier. I understand some copiers ship with a starter toner and full strength developer. I cannot speak for other brands but with Toshiba the set up instructions are not in the box. The tech has to download them. I cannot speak for other brands but a complete rookie trying to set up a Toshiba copier would have a hard time completing the task and could damage the copier in the process.

I don't understand why your dealer principals would impose a quota increase each year... What is the incentive for you to stay? Yes, your sales will go up every year as you increase your territory size, but eventually that quota will be unrealistic amidst declining page volumes and declining margins. We do not have bonuses at our company, but at least the quotas and compensation packages are very fair and negotiable based on tenure.
