This is a great article! One point that I disagree on is that HP will be entering the SMB market with this acquisition. What's the point? Dealers own the SMB market, and most dealers will sell whatever their customers already have. Where HP has the advantage is going into their national and global accounts where they dominate with MPS contracts on A4 devices. It's my understanding that the system is old. I just had the same thing with a NJ State Contract and Xerox was quoting the older model and not the new "I" model.

This is by no means scientific survey or anything like that just had some thoughts going through my head the last couple days. Is anyone being compensated on volume of machines and not GP?I hate to compare our industry with car sales but I know a lot of dealers are on this model. I know several people who make nothing but a very small salary until they sell 10 cars in a month and then start getting paid a commission after that 10th car for each one. My thoughts are that it probably would not

Toshiba's dealer costs have stayed the same but the discounts from the published costs are less. AKA a price increase. The products are higher featured and well received.

I'm with Art. I would contact Kyocera support. Usually there is either a) a work around b) a different print driver would work in their environment or c) IT is being lazy. I'm sure Kyocera globally has encountered this issue before and has a solution.

Oracle/Unix Environment

We recently sold a CS3551ci to a customer. After the deal was done the IT department said it would not work with their Oracle/Unix environment. My understanding is that the IT department loves HP and the simplicity of installing HP printers and doesn't want to do anything extra to get the Kyocera working with Oracle. I've never even touched a Unix print server and I need to work with their IT department to get this working. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

We waived our normal $300.00 HDD removal fee and charged only $150.00 for the part. It's getting crazy here in NJ with the Delta variant in N.J.  Today our Governor has ordered that K-12 schools (students and staff) will be required to wear masks at the start of the school season. In addition he has recommended that all citizens wear masks again when indoors (vaccinated or not).  I'm thinking my Monday of next week there will be a mandatory mask mandate again for everyone when they are indoors.  Also heard that many larger financial firms in NYC have now delayed a full return to the office until 2022

MP C6004SP & Fax Routing to Folder

Had an interesting question posed to me and I don't know if there is a way to make a change with the MFP settings for Fax. On occasions the customers server will go down, during the time that the server is down, incoming faxes will not route to the fax folder, they will then print. The client can't have these faxes out in the open? Is there a setting with the MFP that we could make a change that the faxes would not print but be kept on the hard drive until released?

The short answer is yes. It would have to be initiated by someone at the point of failure. I would teach someone there how to change things in the event that the server goes down with the intent of switching things back once the server is back on line. The incoming fax can either go to the Fax Document Server or there is such a thing as "Locked Fax". Like Locked Print, it stores the incoming fax in the copier harddrive until an authorized code is entered to release them. Don't ask me how to

There is literally no differentiation between the products anymore. People just want to print, copy, scan and fax. All the bells and whistles just increase your wholesale price. cannot sustain the level of losses they incur regardless of what they say at dealer meetings or to the industry analysts etc. I would love to hear more from others about specifics you use for selling value. I don't think customers really care about guarantees for service anymore because it's to tough in their minds to take a risk and change even if they are upset. I had a client this week, who we share devices with a competitor in their offices tell me he bought a Konica Minolta from my competitor

Since I finished writing the covid blogs, I'll be using these blogs as more of a report of what's been going on with recent events in my sales activities.

The last four weeks has seen me in a prolonged slump for orders.  Every one of my 26 opportunities is stalled for one reason or another.  Thus I've relegated the month of July for prospecting because there is nothing else to do.  Hoping that four solid weeks of prospect will increase the opportunities to the point that the funnel will explode,

I have a customer who has a Savin C9120 and a Savin MPC2003. They just got a new Mac and in order to get full print functionality they would need to purchase PostScript options for both. This would probably be about $700. Does anyone have documentation on why Mac requires PostScript? I know I can come up with some work-arounds but PostScript is really the way to go.

jswinberlin , What kind of MFD? Does it support SMB v3? Other options, Scan to FTP (most Mac USers won't go for this). You could set up a folder on a Windows Box or the MFD itself and scan to it, and map that drive to the Mac. You can sometimes Add Software to the MFD (Like ASend for Canon MFDs). I just did the same thing myself. Thursday I sat and cleaned my office, purged a bunch of old junk I didn't need and reorganized some files etc. Friday I had two meetings, one to write up an order, and the second for a large format and an MFP. After that I decided I was going to go sit by the pool, relax and recharge. And of course since we aren't 9-5 people I am now back to doing work on Saturday morning. Happy 4th everyone!

Art, I worked with Biscom to take their Android App (already Developed) and loaded the apk file on a Samsung. I was able to send receive a fax, I was the first one in the world to do this,. I then worked with the Biscom Developers to tweak this app so it understood what a Scanner Printer was and how to use them. yeah, 501 replaces the 45ppm the 601 replaces the 52ppm A4, can't remember those models numbers right now. From prelim pics, seems the book is out if the 60ppm A4 device is actually a Ricoh OEM. Not sure, but the DF looks completely different from any other Ricoh DF

The problem with the 5200 series was always the cost per page for the cartridges. We sold very few of them for that reason alone. That machine would have been a real winner if the consumables had let the dealer put it under a service plan at a reasonable CPP. Perfect machine for medical but just too expensive for the cartridge.

Good move! Do the right thing. A competitor of ours is now out of business for doing stuff like that. They would leave the line blank and then go back to the office and write 63 months. Have seen deals where they went and upgraded a lease that was a year old for a new 63 month term at 1,000.00 a month and the customer signed it and never got any new equipment and was stuck with two leases.

So, two days after signing up and seeing many "leads", I received an email that offered the Premium Service for $5.00 per month. I signed up! I had to sort through 455 leads, many outside of my area, thus I just deleted them. I got the list down to 63 or so, most were for business intelligence, a few for electronic equipment. At 5 bucks a month and no minimums that seems to be a good offer if you only want to monitor a few wide formats, right? But if you have a fleet of 500? That's $2,500 per month. We have always been a toner based wide format dealer and never did much with ink but since we are no longer carrying Ricoh things have changed. i have been thinking about different vertices who can use WF outside the traditional AEC market....church's, car dealers, retail etc. I have even heard of funeral homes using them. This is a great topic! I just got back from a wide format training session from Canon. Here are some verticals they recommended: - Malls (Kiosk promotions and advertising) - AEC - Funeral Homes (portraits and casket wraps) - Wedding photographers (they can sell 24x36 photo's for $150 to $250 and their cost is $4 to $5) - Any company that wants to focus on corporate communications but can't afford digital signage The Canon plotters are great, but we've learned to stay away from the MFP's

Canon was in my office a week or so ago and the guy mentioned funeral homes. I don't think I'll ever forget the story....apparently, some gang banger was killed and his family and friends wanted to have a big portrait of him at the funeral so they printed it out on an imageprograf. There is probably not a single answer to this but I am working on a fleet management deal with a large organization. 13,000 laser printers and 20,000,000 prints per month. They want a service only option as they have a nationwide contract for supplies with large rebates. All of my TCO and cost calculators have supplies tied in. Anyone have a method to make this easy! i'm thinking the service portion per page cost would be quite small.

I don't have the answer you are asking for but I do have some thoughts. Percentage wise, parts are going to be quite small, especially if PM kits are considered supplies in your scenario. That only leaves travel and labor with travel probably being the lions share since it seldom takes long to fix a printer. I would try to establish a trust-worthy calls/printer/year estimate based on your installed fleet makeup and volume and go from there. Apply your burden rate and add a little for parts and

Great points. I think this can be a cash cow for us. I agree that we need to have some ground rules set that says we will decide when a machine will be replaced...within reason. Customer has asked for a price with "free" printer replacement and straight service. I appreciate the feedback! Art, if GAP has anything I'd surely be interested in hearing about it.

All the brochure states is that there is no slow down for up to 220gsm. Do you know how much the slow when printing over 220gsm? I previously posted something on this back in November but I have heard a lot of rave reviews of this system. The only one I have seen was at the Canon Expo in NY. For the ones who have placements in the field how are they performing and at what volume ranges have you placed them. We got the pre launch info yesterday, brochures haven't been posted to dealersource yet. From the launch letter it appears that print/copy is only through the bypass for 11 x 17. This is a great device for that customer who only needs A3 infrequently but now doesn't need an A3 machine.

I like the Muratec but the pricing is very high. You have to purchase the doc feeder on the machines and it is about 1200.00. My reps have had a hard time selling it since its even more expensive than canon. Canon is our go to product line but we have Samsung and Muratec as well. With Samsung you can make a good margin on the machines and the new ones seem to be working well. We have been a Samsung dealer since about 2008, so we have seen the horrible and the good side of them. If you want to

Muratec is more expensive than Canon since you have to add the doc feeder. We have been a Muratec dealer for almost a year and have not had much traction. We mainly sell Canon and Samsung. I would pick up the Canon line as the brand awareness will win you plenty of business. It is the same for Samsung. Everyone has a Samsung product in their home or office etc. They know the brand name and will gravitate towards it. You can make good money with Samsung as well. I would agree with everything

Sharp may cut 3,000 jobs in Japan (1,000 in photocopier division)

The company will include the job cuts in its business reconstruction program to be announced as early as this summer. Sharp, unable to reverse its deteriorating earnings, has made it an urgent task to reduce fixed costs. It may implement the job cuts by the end of this fiscal year at the earliest. Since the management crisis at Sharp first surfaced, the company has twice implemented large-scale business restructuring measures aimed at reducing labor costs. read more here

Canon is a great product. Most of the time it sells itself based on the brand awareness. (Technically you could go into RBS accounts with Canon, right?) If you're going to sell Muratec, I think it's better go get authorized for Konica Minolta instead. Konica and Canon are premium brands that can give your dealership higher status and support. mnchstr I may have a unique perspective being at an Independent Canon Dealer for 25 years and spending 2+ years at RBS (Ricoh Business Systems) as The Boston Region (NE) Solutions Manager. The Canon equipment is solid, What I personally prefer we sell if we are doing 5 year leases or longer. Support is pretty good but not what it once was (They are spread kind of thin). We sell 90% Canon but Samsung is coming on strong. Not eating intio our Canon sales (They cost more) but Samsung allows us to

I can go into RBS accounts nowbut the direct pricing is usually lower than my cost even though my DBM says the direct and dealer cost is the same. I have independent Konica and a lot of direct Konica in my territory already . Sharp has reached out to us a couple of times over the years also but EVERYONE sells sharp around here even the Konica dealer.

Japan’s Sharp Corp. will post a net income loss of 250 billion yen ($2.3 billion) for the year through March, according to the Mainichi newspaper. Great article as usual Art. I agree, technology like this is a great option for any industry. I think that the reason it has been so slow to take off is that people like the "hard copy". Whether it's because they feel it's more secure, or just out of habit, having the signed document in hand is a tough thing to let go of. I see the same with becoming a cashless society, people love paper!

Printing on Tab Exstensions

I have a customer who continues to use an old Ricoh Aficio 1055 because they need something that can print on tab exstensions but their AMV is down to 3k so a new MP 6502SP is overkill. Outsourcing and peel-and-stick labels are not satisfactory answers. Anybody have any ideas?

You'll see previous conversations on this subject elsewhere on this site but in a nutshell, the answer is no. I presume it's a government mandate thing, not a Ricoh thing. Once you understand what triggers the copier response, you can come up with workarounds. The problem checks are checks that have a series of yellow dots on three spots across the bottom of the check. These are almost unperceptible to the human eye. You cover these dots and the rest of the check should copy.

Ray, that's a great story! Thanks for sharing it, Art! I do remember those days but initially I was more in theIBM, Xerox, Silver Reed, Sperry Remington, Brother, Hermes typewriter sales arena, then IBM and Xerox memory typewriters, then IBM word processors, then Canon and Sharp and Xerox fax, and finally as a Xerox then Ricoh / Savin copier/mfp rep. Get this, I finally get a lead and it's for a new new construction company and they are looking for a wide format copier/printer/scanner system and a color copier. I called and got all of the needs in advance and scheduled an appointment to present and close. For net new we have a special comp plan, pretty much means I make more selling at cost than adding GP (go figure). Thus, I'm walking in with my best pricing scenario, except for another two percent. However, this is a deal for two systems

The rep quoted it as "included" but told him he could only get it from a Ricoh dealer and that it is an $1,800 option. Mind you, he's selling Canon equipment. The accounts print shop is 3 years away, and the account isn't concerned about multiple vendors. I'm glad to see you have the same concerns about this as I did.

As a senior veteran of the copier wars I can report that you never get the toner out of your blood. Every decade has there bumps, but when I started, SCM only had liquid coated paper copiers ( you know that smelly stuff). Xerox was the only one that had plain paper. Now that was a difficult sale.
