This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago

Second Week of March 2007

Just when you thought we were done with two years of dealing with COVID19, the world could be on the verge of World War III because of Russia. Gas and diesel prices are going through the roof and inflation is the highest it's been since the early 80's in the US.
It is hard to stay upbeat today and especially after the two years that we've had. I can tell you one thing I remember from the 80's. That one thing is that companies will need to reduce costs yet again. It's not a matter of need or want, they will need to lower costs. Your job is to figure out how to make that happen.
That job can happen in many different ways. Reducing lease costs, maintenance costs, IT costs, or migrating services to the cloud, or even removing print servers for cloud printing. The opportunities are there, they just need to be found.

No question that is alot of G.P. in anybody's book. I personally am not one who believes that a sales rep has right to share in the savings when a dealer takes advantage of "cash with order" discounts or quantity discounts. Sales reps aren't the ones who get "stuck" with discountinued inventory ,etc. so I'm willing to accept that deal. Therefore, I'm OK with Dealer Cost being based on regular "Single Unit Price" regardless of occassional discounts. The way I see it, for me to lay claim to that

You speak of $300,000 G.P. above sales cost. Anytime you try to compare commission plans, you need to keep in mind that that the amount of "pad" added to Dealer's Cost can have a significant impact on commissions even though it may not effect total income. This is what I mean. One company may pay $3,000/mo. salary and 40% commissions but have a sales cost that is 20% above Dealer Cost. Another company may only pay $3,000 salary and 30% commissions but be a better plan because they pay based on

If the page size is anything over 30" (even 30.001) then it will not print on 30" paper. It may also be that the image is rotated

Technology is an ink-based printing engine designed with printheads that span the width of a page. In other words, with HP Edgeline Technology, the paper moves, not the printhead. It’s that simple. For increased printing speeds, HP Edgeline Technology printers use large, stationary printheads—arranged in a line—to dispense ink across the entire width of the page as the paper passes beneath them. The result is more accurate ink-drop placement and breathtaking print speeds for crisp, print-shop quality

Lanier and RBS will be merging by April 1st. They will become Ricoh Business Systems. They are trying to take the best from both sides so a lot of the back end structure will come from Lanier. The head of sales is coming from Lanier. Head of marketing from Lanier. Head of accounting from RBS.

Re: IS300e scanner and CL7200 for color copying

Warren Erickson (Guest) ·
I have placed some IS300e with CL7200 systems. But it has been awhile since I did that. The quality will not stand up to the new MP-C serics. You can't add fax. You don't have the same touch screen. And printer supplies are higher cost. I think the time of this combo has passed with the MP-C2500/3000/3500/4500 unless you are in a real price fight with a printer - scanner combo.

Just got the price list and printing is not standard, they have the same 5 configurations. Plain jane; Print; print/Scan; print/scan/fax; print scan with doc mall. The print includes RPSC only. No more 1394. dropped the price a little. Had a bunch left over in the warehouse, I guess.

You need to make a change to one of the User Parameters. By default all of our fax systems has this feature turned on. Follow these steps to turn off the automatic printing of transmission reports. Once this is turned off, it will only print "error" confirmation reports. Press User Tools/Fax Features/Key Op Tools/Parameter Settings/Select Switch Number, for our case, select switch 03/Select Bit Number, for our case, select Bit 0. Change setting to 0(Off) or 1(On). Jason, It is every station that has problems printing. The reason for concern is that they were able to print out of this program before they upgraded Plotbase (earlier this year) and not they cannot. We know it's their software's problem but the thinking is that perhaps something changed in our software at the time of upgrade. Plotting to file first and then printing is not an option. Thanks. The finisher is in the upper area of the inside of the device. It will staple 30 pages but has no offset sort, only standard sorting. The cost per page is .012007 That is the dealer cost for service and supplies. Probably mark up to .02 You don't add individual components, you order the unit preconfigured. The XS model has all the bells and whistles. A Ricoh 3030sp is competetive with the XS version. You'll get it on the CPP. FYI Does have quite a long warmup period. The scanning is nifty yet

Bottom line, The copier manufacturers are in the business of manufacturing copiers. Dealers are in the business of selling copiers. Mfgs panic anytime they see their inventory exceed certain levels and do all they can to continue manufacturing at consistant levels. When inventory exceeds preset levels, what do they do? they seek other methods of distribution to move equipment. Look at car manufacturing in the US, they will offer all kinds of incentives to their current dealers to move machines

Just a rant here but did they trade the 3131 with Toshiba for the MP 9000-1350 series? If so, you got old technology and gave away our high volume edge. Or how about IBM getting it too. Some research results...Duplex is $483. Fax is $348. 128MB of memory is $549. Ethernet is $389. What about finishing? Under copy specs it says staple collate but there is no stapler option however there is a staple cartridge listed under supplies. Is it standard and somehow imbedded in the mainframe? Toner is $170 but what is the yield? 4349 maintenance Kits and a $99 ADF maintenance kit has to be considered but again, don't know what the estimated life of these are.

Our dealership recently had WF training from Ricoh's WF product manager and we asked him specifically about color WF products. He made no mention of Ricoh bringing one to market...only that Oce had one, but it was well over $100K. I get a lot of requests for this product, but I'm not sure how many of these clients would be willing to pay $60K. I think most of my clients' requests are just wishful thinking. However, it would be cool to have this in our arsenal. Brian

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago

Second Week of October 2006

In my previous report about the reduction of 400 billion printed pages globally was a little shocking when I saw the numbers (12%) .  From 2015-2019 IDC reported an annual decrease of 1.2% annually for printed pages from office and home devices. Thus I'm taking that the COVID19 was 11%. IDC states that 6 million pages were printed globally every minute in 2019. Let' understand the numbers.

OKI 9800dn, you can get it with or with out a rip. You can also get the oki with out with the rip. Also the oki may be less expensive to print than the Xerox. You can do a per page cost analysis. Ricoh products?? not sure I have not had access to the latest printer models in quite awhile. The oki is a superb color system. Ihad one printer call it a "print shop in a box" Art Post

Our price sheet indicates that the SR3020 will accept the Type 3260 hole punch. Could this be true???? I've not seen the Model SR3010.

Anyone have one of these at a really good price? Have a customer who asked about having it but they of course do not want to spend much to get it.

Re: 240w being replaced?

There is a second gen model, as too when it will be released ......, your guess is as good as mine. I spoke to product marketing a few months ago and asked then they include a "thumb drive" printing support. I have not heard anything else since then. With Vision coming in May of 08 in Dallas, Ricoh has had a pattern of holding new equipment launches for the meeting. I fo one hope that the 240W is sooner than later and also hope that they are also going to include a color scanner. It also seems

3245C SPF -- 9 bin mailbox

Darth Vader (Guest) ·
I have a potential customer who claims that he has a bid from a competitor for a Color machine (minumum 45 pages per minute in black and white) with print/scan/scan-to-email/fax with a saddle-stitch finisher and a 9-bin mailbox. He wants me to bid apples-to-apples. 1. I think the 3245C SPF would be ideal, but it has no 9-bin mailbox. (I have heard rumors that there are sometimes ways to attach these to models that don't list them as standard options through some special harness.) Any

Ricoh MFP’s to the customer’s fingertips. It’s large, color, touch screen provides an easy-to-use interface, giving users the option to preview their scans, rotate or delete pages, and encrypt their files before sending them out via email, network folder, fax server, or to an enterprise application. Additionally, the Quick Connect feature can easily automate workflow processes by enabling customers to create custom “scan to” buttons. Each ScanStation OP comes with maintenance and support, based

Sorry, I missed the fax requirement. We haven't ever had a unit that allowed for both the Fax and the 9 Bin Mailbox have we...from the 551 and AP4500 up to present day. I've never done it but my understanding is that if you add GlobalScan you can have fax functionality on any unit.

Is he the only one that needs the mailbox requirement? If so, set him up with the RPCS driver and have his default output set to the upper bin of the finisher. As far as fax..........well, not sure this is a tough one

I am not a SE but I always thought that the inches/mm/pixel decision is made within Plotbase and anything sending to the unit will display and print that way?

That's true but he's wanting to set inches/mm in the driver so his page sizes display correctly at the client, not in Plotbase. The path is a one time setting, no need to change it. I'm pretty sure it places the file there temporarily on it's way to Plotbase. I know there is a way to set the inches

I spoke with Terry Duncan and Bill Carroll at Ricoh on this. They said that if the customer needs to download the latest PPF from the website instead of using the install cd. They said they had encountered some corruptive files on the cd. I had the customer go to ricoh-usa.com and once he downloaded the newest version, he was able to see the trays. Another happy customer.

480 background haze

Msh (Guest) ·
Everything that's printed out of the machine has a light haziness to the white areas. This is true for copies, prints from autocad and windows test pages. The haziness is definatly a result of the print process and not the data being sent to it, or dust on the platen. I've replaced the developer and cleaned the LED printheads. I replaced the corona wire recently as well. I noticed this initally after replacing the corona wire, but didn't have a copy to look at to see if it was present before

240 roll feed problem.

Msh (Guest) ·
When a new roll is inserted, the first copy of a set is always missing about an inch or so. If another set is sent, the first one may come out correctly or it may not, its hit and miss. But if I were to unload the paper, and then print again, the odds that the first one out will be an inch or so short is good bet. It only seems to do it on a new roll, so I think that the weight of the roll is a factor. At one time I think there was a toner/developer spill in the machine. The tech that worked on
