This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago, The First Week in August 2003

There's an interesting thread below about the Riso V8000 which was a dual color single pass duplicator. At the time I was selling the Ricoh products and all we had was the Ricoh TCII. Where Riso developed a single device that was able to print colors, Ricoh came out with an optional slave device.  You could not print to the Ricoh TCII, in order to get two colors in a single pass, you had to make the masters on a single color Ricoh duplicator.  Once the masters were made you then had to transfer the drums with the masters to the slave unit.  Not the best scenario, however I was able to quite a few of these in printshops.

not expected to have any immediate affect on the company's funding of the plan, the company said. The ruling comes as Xerox looks to grow sales of its equipment after enduring years of troubling issues, including a federal probe into its accounting practices. Earlier this week, the company posted slightly lower second-quarter earnings, as weak demand for supplies and services overshadowed improving sales of new copiers and printers. Shares of Xerox closed on Friday at $10.65, off 15 cents.

Both of these Canon systems can not print onto pre-punched three hole paper in the portrait mode! (the system wll go into misfeed). My customer has to run the stock in the 8 1/2 x 11 R (landscape). The system then slows. He then bought a 2105 and 2090 from us! Our 90 and 105 run prepunched throught the RT at full engine speed! We must not forget the Riso V8000 2-color single-pass system. I also can't speak for registration variance Riso vs Ricoh nor TC-II vs. 2 passes. I'm mearly suggesting that it makes for a compelling argument...whether it actually holds water, I don't know. Riso quotes a +or- one millimeter as an "acceptible variance on their current product line not counting the V8000. I don't sell the Ricoh nor do I compete against it so I can't speak to the registration or lack thereof.

Re: 400 DPI IMAGE MOVEMENT!!!

I thought that 1 mm would be acceptable as well. I think that it is hard to compete trying to sell a dup and a tc11 when there is competitive 1 pass system that will lay two colors well and consistently. I wonder if, in the long term, the RICOH will stay consistent with a certain margin on movment, and the riso will start going all over the place. That I do not know, but that is the argument my higher ups are sticking to. I appreciate everyones input. Thanks again, Brian

When printing to a color copier however, this is a bad thing, since they don't use dots, a low LPI setting will result in "jaggy" images due to the low resolution. Last, i've noticed the LPI setting greatly affects the smothness of Color Blends in Quark. THis only applies to actual blends you create in Quark. All their literature says 11x17. I can't imagine that it can, otherwise it would say so. Heck, Ricoh made it a point to specify it. And the only other black & white that I saw with 12x18 in the Better Buys for Business publication was Xerox. All others are 11x17. This could be a nice perk for construction, engineering and other environments that require B&W 12x18 capabilities.

Mike, I think you're going to get "burned" again. If the 1055 printer "kit" truly included nic and memory, then why is the nic price itemized, as well as the memory? There are no notes stating that the kit includes any of that. The RMAP pricing notes is always the place I go to for answers like that. No mention whatsoever. This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago, The Fourth Week in June 2003

Fifteen years ago, hard to believe that many of us have seen so much come and go during those years.
The Ricoh Aficio 1224 was an A3 color device that printed 12 pages per minute in color and 24 pages per minute in black.  We had some horrific problems with speed when the Ricoh 1224 would go into an auto calibration during a print or copy run. It would take up to 5 minutes to calibrate and then restart the print job, and yes we had many frustrated users because we weren't aware of how the 1224 calibrated.  Too boot Ricoh also never made us aware of the issues.
Enjoy the threads from 15 years ago this week!

Ted, Hold the phone! The page you are referring to references page volume of 8,000 / 5000 then below that changes to developments. Developments must be divided by 4 to convert to letter size pages. The accompanying bar graph with color black ratios uses the developments numbers, but says copies. I think the person who put this together does not understand the difference in copies and developments. If you look in the sales information guide on the launch CD which is in the reference folder, you

I have not personally seen the output, but from what I have heard it is more of a business color quality. I had a Xerox agent try to position it as a solution in a print for pay against a 6513 and the customer did not see the Xerox as a viable competitor. The DC 12 and 3535 are the only two products that I believe fit the creative color category.

Re: Band With Auto-Negotiaion

It sounds like you are refering to having a 10mb or 100mb network. All of the ricoh network devices I'm familiar with use Auto-detect to determine the speed of the network but then they set that value and do not detect again. So when the printer is turned on it looks at the network and detects 10mb speed, and sets the card to 10mb. If the network chances to 100mb the printer does not detect this until it is turned off and on again.

Re: citrix printing???

I'm no expert, but my understanding is Citrix runs on a Unix platform. Usually requires the mini PCL drivers and limited functionality at the output device. But recent drivers that Ricoh has updated supposedly offer additional functionality like duplexing. Bottom line Ricoh products can connect to this environment, probably depending on the version of Citrix. But you have to be mindful of sharing what functions you will be able to access. Best bet is to put it on as a trial, based on a pre

Well, I think GWA refers to the controller almost exclusively. Ground Work Architecture as I understand it refers to the fact that the components such as memory, hard drive, networking, etc. in the controller, are shared by the system and accessed as needed. This is why the old systems needed 2 network connections for printing and scanning and now we only need one (because they didn't have this).

Ridldle Me This Brad...when it is talking about BW only, it states 33,333 is the MMV. Wouldn't doing black only use only ONE dev.... The Black. You wouldn't divide this by 4. So, it still makes sense the way I stated that if they are talking pages on the BW, then they must be talking pages on the color. You can't be talking pages for BW and Dev. for the Color on the same chart...but then again this is Ricoh, the Master of Ambiguity!

One more thing, it says the "target volume" is 5K/8K per month. That is best case senerio, or what Ricoh would want the customer to do. In reality, the machine can do more than the "target volume". This number is called the "Max. Monthly Volume". That is what is being referenced in the chart.

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago, The Third Week in April 2003

What's interesting in this weeks threads?  Seems 15 years ago mighty Xerox also had their fair share of problems.   Interesting times indeed!

Enjoy the threads from ten years ago this week!

Troubled Xerox

with a mountain of debt and some tough competition from some very strong rivals — Hewlett-Packard, Canon and Ricoh, to name a few — not to mention a dire slump in business spending. And it will take some time before Xerox can convince analysts and investors alike that its new products and ideas will take the company in a positive long-term direction. After all, it did let the mouse slip from its grasp.

Since no one really pays LDP, I could sell it for this if I had to (but only if it were opening the door to something larger, because I wouldn't make anything by selling it this cheap!). We are a Konica and Ricoh dealer and I am familiar with both products (moreso the Ricoh). They are both good machines, but the 1060 software is far better in most respects: Scanning Konica scans to the hard drive on the controller and then you retrieve it from the "box" with a piece of software called ScanTrip, 25.00 per seat. You have to know which box to pull the scan from. It's what I would call pull scanning. ScanTrip can be set to poll the machine periodicaly to see if there is anything in

I'm sorry for the misunderstnading Jim, I said that Ricoh must stand behind THEIR MRMV. They make up the MRMV's, so they should have the guts to back them up. If Ricoh wants to change the MRMV's for machines and make them "more reasonable" then they need to do it and we will figure out how to sell them. Until then, they need to stand behind a product that has not exceeded THEIR MRMV!! 8,500 copies per month average is not "too high" of a volume for this machine. I'm sorry Darren, but your

Re: E-Cabinets and Mac

As far as I know, RSV (Ricoh) does not officially support Macs and has no plans to do so. I know of people using eCabinet in a Mac environment. The Macs are used to view docs on eCabinet(using Internet Explorer). You need a Windows based PC to do any printing or indexing (Scan Capture or PC Capture). However, it must be cautioned that if there are support issues, you may have trouble getting it resolved as there is no "official" support for Mac with eCabinet.

I agree, you should sell considering 30% to 50% as the acceptable range. 8,500 for a 1018D is about 50% of the MRMV. There should be no problem here. Now Ricoh will also tell you that the MRMV is to be run evenly over a months time. not 15,000 in one or two days, but about 750/day (based on 20 working days per month. Some companies run 24/7, others work on weekends also, but we are looking for an average. The only times we have had serious probelms was when one customer tried to run about

Your looking at $600+ which would take years to pay for in ink/master savings not to mention the inconvenience of having to switch cylinders back and forth depending on original size. I think you will also find that the end users will not comply and just continue to use the 11x17 drum for 8.5x11 copies rather than hassle with the change.

I think it will work! The firmware files for both controllers are the same (0.58). I have found one strange bug in the 1055 driver (definitley the driver, not the controller) and used a 700 driver to work around it with no side effects. I have submitted the bug to Ricoh to see what they say about it. Once I hear from them, I'll post some info on it here. I'll try to catch a 551 or 700 going through refurb and install one of these on it to see. Thanks! Lee

From: Ted Kochman (tedkochman@msn.com) Date: Tuesday, March 04, 2003 05:03 PM According to Ricoh's RMAP Full Maintenance, under Combo w/Ricoh Supplies: cpc is either 0.0145 or 0.0135. The note below states: "Combo includes Black Toner only; Color Toner not included". I gather that you can bill them as low as 0.0135 for everything excluding the color toner, which you would sell them. Or you could be creative and run the maintenance yourself, bill them a cpc for color clicks and include the toner.

If you need the speed of the 1045 for the copy side than you're stuck with Global or SR Pro, if you can slow things up a bit, and maybe sell the idea of a little color to make up for the speed differential than try selling the new 1232 with a print/scan option. This will scan to e-mail just like the 1060. We got a 1224 and 1232 in the showroom this week and they seem pretty solid.
