This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago for the First Week of June 2005

Usually I will try an posting something interested from my day when posting these reruns.  Today I was an expect weed puller, fell off a ladder while painting and dumped a quart of paint on the pavers.  I also spent time planting flowers and cleaning up the homestead.  A full day of work and I got work tomorrow. I need a fraking vacation!

(4) Ricoh 105's w/ TRSystems MX front end vs. Xerox Neuvera and Canon IR110

Guest ·
I feel a little out gunned in this fight but feel its worth the effort if I can put it together. Does anyone have any competetive info that may help against the Xerox and Canon product? The solution I am proposing is a TR Systems MX front end pushing 4 Ricoh 105's. Both competitors are proposing 2 systems (2 IR110's etc.) My combined print speed and redundancy has caught the customers attention but I am concerned with 1.Image Quality 2.Printing on mylar tabs 3.Running large cover stock runs

I would suggest that you get all the help you can from your Ricoh reps. Also, I will tell you that I have not had any luck printing on Milar Tabs. I assume that is what you need, not just the ability to print on tab stock where only the holes are milar reinforced. You should be OK with peaks of 2.2 million but I wouldn't commit to a 5 year lease if I had any say in the matter.

Are you inserting the DWG file directly into Plotclient WIN and then adding other files types or are you submitting the request from Autocad? I am not aware of being able to drop a DWB file directly into Plotclient WIN. I would think that you could submit the print request from Autocad, have the desktop automatically open Plotclient WIN and drop the DWG's in to the job. Then from Plotclient WIN, I would think you could add other file types and send all to print. Let me know how the job is

The CL4000 is a pretty good envelope printer but i'm sure there are some paper stocks out there the will cause a problem.

toner leads to dirty corona wires and more service. 3. You can reclaim either mono or dual toner. But if you reclaim the toner you get paper dust in the toner and lose copy quality down the line. The excess toner comes from the toner cleaned off the drum, does not have anything to do with mono or dual toner. Ricoh has had copiers that reclaimed the toner but dropped this for consistent copy quality.

Trimming the paper is not a solution. Print a border free paper means that the color is exactly at the edge of border, practically we don't have white paper remaining after the print. My question was: CL 7000 or CL 7001 is able to print like this ??? 10x, A.

Re: CL7000 or CL7100

Will any laser based system print to the edge of the paper without trimming? I thought "borderless" printing was only accomplished the way Art described. My mind tells me you would have fuser jam nightmares if the toner was all the way to the edge of the paper. ... then again, I am a bit behind the times.

Both machines will print onto 12 x 18 thru the bypass. Full bleed means printing an 11 x 17 image edge to edge onto 12 x 18. Both machines have a 1/16th void on 4 sides so it wont jam in the fuser. This is why God invented 12 x 18.

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago for the First Week of May 2005

Back in 2005 I was just 2 years into having a real web site for the copier industry.  I started back in 2000 with an message forum with MSN communities.  It was really cool because there was no on-line forum where sales people and principals could chat, share ideas, share war stories, share information, share competitive info and the list goes on and on.  Twenty years later there is still no site like the Print4Pay Hotel.  Did I do something right?

We're still the only site that allows members to communicate in a secure forums format along with blogs, press releases, quotes, leads and webinars.

Enjoy these really cool threads from 15 year ago this week!

How I understand it is that the image will print full 11 x17 with no borders and then theuser (if they need to) will then trim the paper. Art

Do the same math on the 2045e vs the 2075. You get $260 vs. $373. That's the same $100 difference you got on the printers. I really don't think the methodology you are using is a good judge of value. Compare the price you pay for the extra 15cpm you get on the 2090 vs the 2075. The point is, you are paying for alot more than just speed. That having been said, I agree with you that they are overpriced...I just don't agree with the methodology you used to arrive at your conclusion.

Leaving money on the table refers to not getting as much money for your product and most of the time refers to a salesperson gouging the customer and selling the product at a ridiculous price. I was just told a story about and e-cabinet that was sold for $60,000, needless to say the product did not perform and the customer would never do business with that salesperson nor the company again. I too have customers that were slightly peeved about this. Try to steer them toward the top tray and if they must use the rear, tell them to print portrait instead of landscape. The problem is there and my techs have worked on it and can get it to get for awhile, but then the same problems happen

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Last Week of February 2005)

Why would this week be different than the rest of the weeks in February?  Since I depleted by pipeline at the end of the year it's been quite the struggle to rebuild.  Thus I'm no where near where I need to be with February coming to an end on Monday for me. To make matters worse I'm off to Aruba the first week of March for our Presidents Club Trip. I was able to add a couple of large opportunities this week, one for MNS and the other for 30 plus devices.  At this time both are March or April business and both will take a lot of work to bring them home.

This is caused by the fuser speed, which is slightly lower than the transfer belt speed. Therefore the paper stalls as it get to the fuser rollers giving the grey band. Check out page 4-78 of the service manual and adjust accordingly. You can make the adjustments to get rid of this problem.

Adjust black dev motor speed. Problem is caused because the paper hits the fuser belt. Same as your AF2238. I thought originally you had the other problems at the other end of the TX unit. You should be able to adjust this out because it's pretty bad.

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Second Week of February 2005)

Just a little more on the show that I'd like to share from this week.  While standing at the end of our booth I was watching the reps from other companies in our section.  So many peeps passed their booth and they did not say a word! No greeting, no communication, they waited for someone to speak to them first.  Needless to say I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that many warm leads were lost because these reps were never taught the fine art of "hawking" while at a trade show. I was taught many years ago by a dealer owner who wanted orders at the show. That art of hawking is to stand (not sit) and to be at the edge of your booth.  Greeting, then the question where they are from (breaks the ice) and then the open ended question of "have you seen" or "do you have". It really does make a difference!

Enjoy the Threads from 15 Tears Ago!

Profits dropped in the parent company's holdings in the third quarter ending Dec. 31, 2004, attributed by the company to lower copier sales and a dip in digital camera prices. The company's emphasis on color machines seems to be gathering steam, though. Konica Minolta has the top market share positions for color copiers in the

I then tell them the benefit of "not having to bend over" to get their prints, plus the ease of use by removing the stacks from the top as they come out collated. Thus siimple explanation has eliminated the rear feed exit problem issues with my accounts.

Interesting idea. I personally think the copier manufacturer's myopia with the 11x17 format has a lot more to do with inertia than with market demand. Look at how well HP and Lexmark have done in the printer market with very limited tabloid product. Why does speed and high capacity paper handling have to equate to tabloid format. I am wondering if the yield is based upon expected use of the machine. I would be very leary of selling a 240W to a customer doing 6K per month. Prospects doing that volume are being quoted 470W's by me. I am looking to place the 240's in environments that are doing 2-4K per month. Any thoughts on this?

We have two service cost fact sheets from Ricoh service in reference to the photodrum. Both show the same cost per LF of about .013 per LF, both show the same cost based on a user performing 59,000LF per year. However the sheet that I recieved from Ricoh Marketing (which is a service cost fact sheet) shows the life of the drum at 131K LF, the lasted from TCS shows the life at 80K LF. Which one is right? 80K LF is the same yield as the 240W and the other analogs. If it is 80K LF, this makes this

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Last Week of January 2004)

I had a great pipeline for January, however almost I couldn't get much of it to move.  Okay so I have an even better pipeline for February thus it's time to make things happen!

There is a work around that is not sanctioned by Ricoh. You must take the staple cartridge out of the SR 860 and then defeat the sensor that tells the SR 860 that the staple cartridge has been removed. Or just remove the staple from the cartridge and defeat the sensor that tells the system it is out of staples. Make sure you try this with your techs blessing. I have a customer with tandem 700P's with one connected to an SR85 with Trimmer. Each 700P is running 65K/mo. Here is the dilema...2075 doesn't have an optional bookletmaker (don't bring up the SR861 Saddle Stitch Finisher, it's not the same) and even if we could afford tandem 2090's, my service department won't let me put them in at that low a volume. I tried a single 2105 to replace both 700P's but the customer won't give up the redundency of dual units and the advantages of dual copy/print

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Last Week of December 2009)

The time was about 4:30PM on the 23rd of this month.  I had just left the office and was on my way home after submitting three orders that day. I had another verbal on an order and was waiting on docs to come to me. If I did receive the docs I could process from the home office.  It was the end of a very good year. I had a short chat with my VP of Sales in the car about the day. A great comment was made about my "drive" and that meant a lot especially at this point in my sales career.

Great threads from 10 years ago this week are below!

I brought this topic up earlier, and it was a genuine concern for the prospect, as they are 90% Mac, and their current Canon systems have PS3 Emulation which slows the systems down. However, being that adding the genuine PS3 to each system averaged $1,000 per machine, and the price difference between the MP C5000 & MP C6000, they decided that the pain wasn't great enough to pay an extra $200 per month and went w/ a combination of Konica-Minolta color & Kyocera b/w gear.

In this case, I would have tried to lead with two units, like you suggested the mono copier and the color printer. However, I would also have asked these two questions: How often do you copy and original? Most places do not copy that often and if you can get them to agree to this, then you have a chance of leading them to an A4 copy solution and an A3 print

Regarding problems selling different programs, I think the major problem we've encountered is communicating the features of the contract to the customer. Some end users don't know their machine is covered, so they just suffer with poor print quality, noise or errors even though they are paying us to fix those (but not ever calling us). I sell both Ricoh and KM. When choosing between the two lines regarding color, I lead with KM. Especially the updated C652 / C552 series (I realize that doesn't help you sell your Ricoh). Try pushing the PPDM solution from Ricoh if you can, KM really doesn't have as clean a solution as PPDM.

Strictly looking at the difference between the MP C6000 and MP C5000, you made the right choice to go with the higher speed model at those volumes. Obviously there is a significant difference in HW price (apples and oranges), but the MP C6000 should have a lower CPP that makes up that difference. Assuming a BW click that is 2 mils cheaper on the MP C6000 and a color click that is a penny cheaper, that equates to a savings of $160, making the monthly delta only $40 vs $200. Am I missing

ensures profit on the "right" side of the deal. This is also good ammunition for more solutions-based selling, which makes it more difficult for a customer to see two proposals as equivalent and therefore makes it more difficult to base their decision simply on who is cheapest.

Old Glory First glad to see you're back in ET. Second, glad to hear that those twisters didn't mess yall up! When competing with units, some times one of the first things I look up is the weight of the unit, yeah, may so stupid however it's my way of telling what a beefier unit is. In all it's glory the KM was only..........gee gotta remember 120lbs heavier or less when you added the options for the Ricoh. BTW, yes, if I did not have the "Sammy" I too would have proposed the MP C5000. Hey, this

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Last Week of December 2004)

It's been a crazy week so far. Christmas hitting in the middle of the week is not good for any sales cycle. I finished my year on Monday and then acquired a cold I've been fighting for three days.  The wife and I have a grand daughter due any day and we then have new years.  For all of those still working it to the end just keep in mind if you don't ask you don't get!

That's because Ricoh have a very secure MFP, one that needs knowledge to use. This is the only machine that allows Windows or LDAP Authentication in addition to what has been previously 'standard'. Also seperate administrators can control the machine functions: machine, users, doc server, network. Therefore you can now have four different administrators, each with their own username and password. By the way there is another standard account: username: supervisor password: blank This one can

Check out the service manuals as there is alot of useful information there. Reduce the DV motor speed 2 by 0.4% for all colour modes. This should remove the problem. It's caused by buckle becuase of a different speed of the transfer belt and registration roller. The reg roller is driven by the colour dev motor.

Just following up on the last point. Glossy paper by its nature is not purous. Therefore toner sits on top of the paper instead of being 'squeezed' in. Therefore it will be easy to rub the toner off. If you increase fuser temperature to compensate then you bring new problems for all other media, and death to the fuser.

Our topic was: Did you think ricoh should have added color scanning to the new 2015/2060 & 2075? (27 members voted) 67% of those polled felt that this feature should have been added to this device. 22% felt that there was no need to add the color scanning. 11% responded with a do not care. So almost 7 out of 10 wanted color scanning to compete with other products.

The sales professional should have ask if weekend service was important to the propects business and why to gain a greater understanding of what is important to the customer. Then agree the the concerns the customer has are valid and then share how he/she (the sales professional) can allieviate the concerns for the the prospect. And then see if there are any ohter concerns and repeat until all are taken care of and then take the order. JG
