Bates Stamping w/Ricoh Copiers

Art Post (Guest) ·
I've had a few people ask me about this the last few days. I have recomended a few Bates Stamping solution w/Ricoh copiers. Here's my solution: We all know that we can not do a "bates-stamp" with copying on most of the Ricoh units, however all of our machines can now scan. I instruct the customer to scan the document to a folder on the network and then open the Bates-Stamp software and then select the icon for electronic documents, select the type of stamp that you need, after that you just

Ricoh MFPs use 2 bit depth technology with 4 shades per color, vs. Konica's 8 bit depth with 256 shades per color. The Konica color engine (which came from the Minolta side, noted for their color technology) handles color better because it is built to. (What I see when I look at print samples of the same photo: the Konica color looks crisper and more "full bodied"; the Ricoh color looks blotchier and pixelated.) If you have a exacting graphics or marketing client, you can't just skate by. For

This is a stupid elementary question, I know but here goes: I found a prospect with an old wide format copier using cut sheets. The could not see a benefit to having a roll feeder. For some reason, I was at a loss for benefits aside from saving on paper which they said they cut their sheets to size. Can someone help me with the benefits of why someone would move to a roll feeder? All I have are: 1. Better for multiple copies. 2. Rotate Sorting 3. Longer size capability. Thanks for any help.

You can print DWG/DXF direclty without having to have AutoCAD on your PC. That's it. I think we need it to compete in that arena with Canon. I recently upgraded a customer from a 2045 to a 2060 and what I did was included a 1515F in the deal. I can see reasons for having it and for not having it. I'm not saying that we need every feature offered by our competition, but I do feel we need this one. I'm getting more and more requests for faxing in this series. In fact, we are placing a bid Monday where the customer specifically requested 50 CPM or higher with fax option. I know that we are the ONLY one bidding that does not offer this option. Due to office space confinements, this customer will not consider other options.

Two new bulletins just posted to TSC deal with some troubling factors of SeriPrinter performance. Bulletin #'s S025/S027 - 022 & 023 announce the availability of non-stick coated screens, eject boxes and eject roller assemblies. I am hoping that this will improve performance in lower volume environments to increase the comfort zone of selling into those environments, and also provide a more stable environment for high volume users.

The Week in Copiers Fifteen Years Ago

First Week of April 2006

Friday of last week saw me travel the three plus hours to White Marsh, MD for KIP wide format training.  I was impressed with the quality of the prints, along with the robust software and the spiffs for each device.  All these years selling Ricoh wide format and I didn't know what I was missing!

Enjoy these awesome copier threads from 15 years ago this week!

I don't know anything about Unix. The customer told me that he had to develop a special driver to print the barcodes, and that he didn't want to have to develop a second driver to print to a Ricoh copier when he was already printing to a Canon. That's all I really know about it -- except that his Toshiba won't print the barcodes -- they can't even get it to stay on the network.

Please let me clarify a few point. SP C210SF (note the spacing between SP and C) SP means this is a printer product - therefore it will print and doesn't need to tell you. C is colour product (BW has no letter, but is followed by four digits) 210 series/grade, generation, and if there are other machines the series/grade at the same generation then this value will change dependant upon what paper sizes can be used. Try a Postscript Driver and Change the "Optimized for speed" to "Optimized for Portability" under the postscript tab. When I sold Canon (clc 1150), we had a problem with a customer printing bar codes. The bar code would come out, but would not be able to be read by the barcode reader. Switching this setting on the postscript driver fixed the issue.

Unrelated to this sort of..... If your customer sends a print job and asks for multiple sets, but only gets one. Happens because auto continue is set to Immediate and the paper size is incorrect. By default the Ricoh will only produce one set if the paper size is incorrect; even if you manually tell it what paper size to use. Auto continue stops the machine to ask what to do, but has a time out so if one job is incorrect all the jobs don't build up behind it. Therefore is it's set incorrectly

There are also the Savin new color mfp that is a collaboration with Brother ( a Savin CLP831 engine and a brother feeder) but I'm not sure about account codes, this is more for the SOHO environment and has a high cost of operation. Otherwise, they would need one of the ISO scan units and a CLP17 or CLP26DN, this will limit color copying capability with respect to finishing and duplexing.

Need to slide doc feed forward and actually lift off the machine to clear jam in doc feed area. Originals are right justified to scan or copy versus centering like the 240W. To make copy, you need to use touch screen panel to select "Synchro". If you don't select, you will get a copy that is a standard size with lots of blank paper around the image. Scan to mailbox

Setting the "LPR" option in "Standard TCP/IP" port is *not* the same as adding a real LPR port. As the Dude mentioned, LPR is alot less problematic, Microsoft has periodicly broken Standard TCP/IP over the years. LPR byte counting is not required for our printers. All byte counting does is tell the printer what size the print file is before it sends the file so that it knows when the end has arrived. Without it, the printer will automatically sense the "end of file". Some printers do require it

I have not tested any scanning on the 480W as of yet, but I always train customers to set the scan size versus using scanner mode. My experience has been that if your scan is slight skewed or off center, the scanner might recognize a bigger size. When printing, the printer will APS a larger paper size or not allow printing at all. If you have a scanned original that is just over 36", not only will the job redline, but you cannot force it to print to a specific roll. Basically, you are left

Ok, 1st, that plotter status should always say that unless you have AutoCAD loaded on the PC. I think Bandit has the answer, using the 300dpi driver should make it work. The Week in Copiers Fifteen Years Ago

The Second Week of February 2006

I had a little time after work today to review a Minnella's Pocket Guide to Copiers (low and middle volume) from 1990. I wanted to see how many companies were in the business that offered dealerships. Notice I did call them manufacturers and the reason for that is many of these companies bought the copiers from the manufacturer but then re-labeled them as a different brand.

Can anyone guess how many there were in 1990?  Do you give up?  There were 25 companies!  With many obscure names such as Silver Reed, Sanyo, Towa, Selex and Swintec.  Interesting that four of those five names also manufactured typewriters.

The Week in Copiers Fifteen Years Ago

The Week in Copiers Fifteen Years Ago

First Week of February 2006

I thought I would mix it up a bit and post some historical points of interest for the first week of February.

  • Rock singers Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash. (1959)
  • The board game Monopoly first went on sale.(1935)
  • Astronaut Alan Shepard hits three golf balls on the moon. (1971)
  • The Beatles come to the U.S. for the fist time. (1964)

"Alan Shepard is the only person to hit a golf ball on the Moon. During the Apollo 14 mission he fitted an 8 iron head to the handle of a lunar sample collection device and launched three golf balls. They are still there!"

I'm sure Alan Shepard has this pre-planned and pre-approved to bring along the golf balls and the 8 iron head.  Developing a plan and putting the plan in action proves time and time again that we can accomplish anything we want.

Here is the response from my tech: The copier interactivity with Novell will be only in a printing environment if you want Novell to act as the print server for the copier. There is a NDPS gateway (a Novell print server software) for Ricoh devices that can be downloaded from Ricoh’s web-site. Other that that, it only will act as a file storage medium. No software, other than the Ricoh NDPS gateway, will be loaded to it like scanrouter, fax print driver, etc… You would have to have a windows pc

I haven't used demo originals in years. The reason I stopped using pre-printed originals was a customer to whom I was demonstrating a new Ricoh 5535 to asked me, "If you want to sell me this machine, you need to show me how MY orginals look, not YOURS!" That did it for me. It also freed up space in the briefcase for other essential forms, like sales orders.

Re: Aficio 3045 user quotas

Neither a card reader or Equitrac is the right answer. Equitrac is a print accounting software. What you need is a Print management software and if it is under $1,000, it probably isn't going to do what you need. Re: Driver Installation Problem

Just FYI, without SNMP, you can still install the driver, it will just give you annoying error messages saying it can't detect the printer state (because it uses SNMP to communicate that info). FTP won't affect this part of the install. Domain and workgroup might affect it. The way I usually test my user rights is to open the spool folder on the server from a client and make a new folder. If I can do that across the network, I should have all the rights I'll need to accomplish anything.

Re: Power Outages

Same here and I'd say our population of Ricoh wide format is in the 40s. How I would handle it: We have a "leave-in-place" electrical monitor. We would attach this device to the power outlet and let it take continuous reading for 2-3 days. If electrical anomolies are detected, that is the customer's problem not ours. The customer would need to provide us with adequate, stable power. Any maintenance problems tied to these electrical anomolies would not be covered under their normal maintenance.

Check, clean, replace all of the vertical transport sensors from the paper cassettes. A slight delay in feeding the paper up to the reggo area will cause phantom jams. You can wear up to 8mm from the TX unit before they may cause a problem. Also as part of your fault finding see if you can find exactly when it happenes. Duplex only, LCT,...

The comparison would be using our HDI driver to create sets and sending to Plotbase versus letting Autocad do it right from the program (not using a viewer but actually batch printing right out of Autocad). You're right, XP should recognize the USB device without a problem. Does the computer have a 2.0 port? Even tho the printer is a 2.0 I would go into SP5844 and change the rate to full speed (12 Mbps). High speed (480 Mbps) can sometimes cause this. And the autochange will always go to 480 when available. As long as its just printing, you'll not notice the difference.Except it will work!

Jason...it is like playing Russian Roulette. I think it's one of those dirty little secrets all mfgs won't really admit, because in the end, you can print directly dwgs from AutoCAD. But in the real world, settings will get lost, changed, or mis-interpreted,especially on a complex dwg file with lots of stuff imbedded in it. Having an AutoCAD license on the server will fix thi$$$$, but I find that converting (plot to file) a dwg in AutoCAD to a plt is the way to go without added expense.

Perhaps your file only contains color data that is in the printer's Gamut? then you wouldn't see any change in files printed as long as all the colors are within the gamut. My driver doesn't have a User Settings under CMYK simulation, are you talking about the PC or Mac? (I'm looking at the PC PS driver). Fifteen years ago the Print4Hotel was just turning 4 years old.  What started as an MSN Community with a handful of members finally made the jump to a full web community in 2003.  As I look back I'm proud of what we've accomplished to give the people in our industry the chance to communicate and share ideas with a global venue.

Enjoy these cool copier threads from 15 years ago this week!

into TONER! More boxes, more toner, more sales outlets, more boxes and even more toner. TONER is where the dough is for the manufacturers. Service, parts and support are all secondary when it comes to TONER. Now factor in that color printers and copiers are selling very well and the demand for these products will increase three fold in the next five years. Well, that's right toner consumption is exploding! Profits from Ricoh, Canon, Xerox and the others will also explode as long as they get the

We're looking for a good source for reliable used Ricoh copiers. We've only been selling Ricoh for a little over 3 years and don't have very many used ones, but we've lost several bids recently to used equipment. Maybe I should take a hint from the car industry and call them "pre-owned", but we still need a good source.

I've been using and selling Atlas Software's PrintShop Mail for two years, which is a great VDP product (and I'm a little surprised that no one's mentioned it on the message boards yet). I'm getting ready to install and evaluate Print Mail, but from Ricoh's materials it doesn't sound like it has nearly the features of PrintShop Mail. Are there any other VDP people out there who have used both? I'd be interested in your feedback or comparisons.

Jack Daly said it best "People buy from people they like" I know a local RBS where the marketplace Manager let his #1 rep based on attitude Sure this rep sold but the Rep was not liked by his customers. Customers were purchasing from this RBS because they liked the Service Tech and Delivery guys. this showed me personally that its not just the sales guy who sales its everybody in the company.
