This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Last Week of February 2010)

Recently we had a contest for all of the salespeople at Stratix.  It was not a demo contest but more about telling the awesome Stratix story to our clients.  There were judges and then group winners for each branch. The group winners would then have the face off.  Years ago we had this contest and I failed miserably, I was so bad that I wanted to be shot.

I have a hard time memorizing anything that has to be word for word, not sure what my issue is but I have an issue.  This will make a good blog will write more on this later this week.

Enjoy These Awesome Threads from Ten Years Ago This Week!

The only competition I see is the Minolta and Canon but the are distant. Also becareful of the Xerox 700 Digital Press (which is nice fit between the 242-252-262 and 5000) it is a very good box and addresses most of the issues in the previous post.

If you're selling Ricoh they have that TCO/proposal builder that can show an accurate comparison to competitive equipment.

5500/C6501, or you WILL lose. The best thing you CAN do, if your customer has a 50,000 + volume monthly, is pit Xerox against Xerox, by telling your customer only the Xerox 5000 can realistically do that volume (that will pit 2 different Xerox salespeople against each other - since the ones who sell the 204-262 are not the same who sell the 5000....) Hope this helps.

I totally agree. The difficult thing is that all of the dealers & direct ops are trained on the same selling features, so even if we are all showing the same data, RBS/IKON will always give the equipment away for nothing, so while the data is good, the value of a local dealer can only overcome so much when their price is 20% lower.

The imagepress is about $25,000 more retail and offers a lot more professional finishing features than the Ricoh. The Canon also has a better reputation in the production printing market. Usually when people look at gear this fast they really pay attention to reliability and quality of build. There is a lot of metal in the Canon, not as much in the KM and mostly plastic in the Ricoh.

Speaking of Green Initiatives, we all know that Ricoh has a recycling program for all of their cartridges and that the Compatible toner manufacturers will accept single-use OEM cartridges. The difficult thing we are trying to get our hands around is what to do with Compatible/recycled cartridges since the only option seems to be to selling them to a "Drill & Fill" operation.

Re: Need some Help!

I don't know about the MP 4001, because we are still liquidating our inventory of MP 4000s, but from a service perspective, the document feeder basically had to have the feeder rebuilt every 100k pages, so that can create some downtime in addition to a higher CPP. Also, there is no print from USB option, it has an ARDF instead of Single-pass Duplex feeder. If there is a Postscript requirement, Ricoh does not have a standard PS3 Emulation, hence requiring a fairly expensive add-on to the system.

We used SalesChain until recently. I liked the nightly syncs with OMD...real time access to service histories. We recently switched from OMD to eAutomate and changed our CRM to Compass and lost all the SalesChain records. What I hate is the use of these programs to gauge a salesreps activity level. I find that a lot of my activity is dealing with lease companies or screwed up invoices or service issues. How do you log that activity? If you log it into the account then your data is watered down

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Second Week of February 2010)

Some additional tidbits from the show I was at for the last three days. I learned along time ago that in order to be successful at these types of events that you need to engage with people when they walk by your booth.  You need to greet everyone that walks by and then ask them a question.  The question I asked the  most is where they were from, after getting a response I would then ask if they have a plotter or ask if they've ever seen a white board before.  The questions sparked conversations and lead to many warm leads along with getting to know more about their business.  Plain and simple if you don;t ask you don't get!

I used to work for a dealership that sold Sharp (when this came out). It is a very nice box, the ultrasonic feeding in awesome, and the pricing for parts and consumables is aggressive. The mistake that Sharp made was to not do a beta program with commercial printers and other high volume users. The irony of Larry's statement is that I would not consider Ricoh a player here. I was able to pump in a dozen orders, something like 18 MFP's and captured net new business revenue for the month of December.  All that at the ripe age of 62!

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Third Week of December 2004)

We've all been there, but it really sucks when it happens.

On Wednesday I had an appointment that was a 2 hour drive.  Yup, it was a lead and a wide format lead at that.  The client had interest to buy or lease now and wanted to meet.  I left an hour early for that appointment because it's not often that I'm in that area of New Jersey and wanted to make sure I was on time. In addition I could make a pit stop, scout the area for some knocking on doors.  I was 45 minutes out when the client emailed me and stated he had to leave the office and was not feeling well.  Yup that's a bummer, however the client wanted to meet on Thursday of Friday of this week.

On Wednesday we emailed back and forth and scheduled for today at 11AM.  This time I was okay with arriving 10 minutes early. I arrived 15 minutes early, sat in the car and went though some emails.  Couple minutes later and I was out of the car and at the front door.  Frak, the door was locked, thus I knocked. No answer,  I stood there for another 5 minutes and knocked again. Nothing.....I then got out my cell phone and called the office, the call went to voice mail (I did leave a message). Went back to my car and pulled my car right in front of the office so I could see if anyone walked in. Fifteen minutes later I sent and email and then sent a text. No response for anything!

I had a little bit of time and decided to wait another 20 minutes just in case he would show. After waiting almost and hour, I called it quits and drove to my 2PM appointment.  WTF!  5 hours wasted in one day and I only had two selling days left.  Can't wait to see if I get an email or a call on Monday.

Enjoy these super threads from ten years ago this week!

Solutions selling is more than

Solutions selling is more than just a life preserver If a customer is like a drowning man, any island will do. But a solution for this man is an island where he can go ashore and find clothing resources, coconuts and fresh water, too. The savvy salesman in any market sees that sales and service intertwine. For example, when a hunter shops for a shotgun, he'll need shells, but might need a vest, boots and socks and maybe a hand-warmer, too. Customers for copier-printers can get the basic box

Assuming that they're on the same WAN & that it's a Ricoh system, you can set it up to Scan to FTP, but instead of an FTP address, set the destination as the IP address of the printer they want it to print on. This also works great if you have a customer that needs to make color copies but doesn't want a full color MFP. You can color scan to FTP on the MFP and set the destination to a color printer, resulting in a color copy.

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Third Week of November 2009)

Dang, it's been ten year since Canon bought OCE.  Interesting that it took ten years to finally retire the OCE brand.

Ten years ago I was blogging about the War for A4, I also find it interesting that the war has been going on for 10 years now, and finally people are starting to pay attention.

Enjoy These awesome threads from ten years ago this week!

Thanks Chuck, I came up with 114 RBS locations based on Ricoh's July GSA, but it doesn't seem to adding up in terms of authorized dealers (just 143). I tracked down a count from Vision 2007 and Ricoh, L & S had 664. Considering the number of authorized dealers probably didn't expand too much, I'm going with that as a rough estimate for now. still open to suggestions and clarifications though....

Re: Dealer and Direct Branch Counts

Surely that 143 does not count IKON locations and your numbers may be suspect due to a dealers having multiple locations etc., etc. Also are you looking for JUST Ricoh or are you considering RFG locations/dealers. I also know that IKON uses a Phone Number/Home address of individuals as a "location" ergo, that throws off your count too.

Of course in reality, lots of customers print 80-100 11x17 pages a day, and some certainly print 0, but there are still many applications that call for 11x17.

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago (Last Week of October 2009)

There's a really awesome topic from ten years ago titled "Is selling at cost the future for print hardware?". I went back and read it several times, and realized that 2009 was the start of the great recession. Somehow we survived, but recently I've heard some grumblings in the AEC industry and they are not good

Interesting approach to the sales process. Strikes me the next promo is for 10% below sticker price...of course unlike cars, manufacturers don't put a sticker price on MFP's to advise the public what the price is supposed to be. At this point we find the margin we are able to obtain on most sales of hardware barely covers the cost of sales for the product...any business profits come from services bundled around the hardware, either connectivity plans, support plans, supplies for colour etc

Ouch, that's a tough one. If it's really a proprietary system, there's probably no chance of a converter being available. What's the actual file format? Does it save in an an autocad format? or HPGL? Secondly, why do you need it to be PDF? If it's for printing to a ricoh wide format, could they use a PDF print driver to drop the file into a folder for the Rioch to grab it from?

Jason -- no the goal it to print a version of an 11 x 17 drawing and scale down to a letter size document. My PCL and PS3 driver is not reading the lines on the drawing as an image. I posted for a colleague so who just joined so I am not sure of the file format, nor am I familiar w/ this application. 2nd part yes -- they could do that -- that was a quick work around that we did - but was unhappy with the amount of clicks that it had to go through. Without a value statement that goes beyond copiers and even mps at this point --- people will be selling at cost, because they are transient, non-professional, and either don't have or have confidence in their skill set. The Trick is to work with companies that aren't in the market to buy copiers---I guarantee that their are other challenges that they are facing and trying to overcome...When you do this you can sell at retail, because there is no competition and you earned that commission. Ricoh is getting out of the paper business. I am looking for a supplier that has paper that meets specs of Ricoh products - for example the new Savin CLP340d can run glossy paper but only 28lb weight - everywhere I look I find glossy 32lb weight - can anyone suggest a good source for paper I can refer my customers to? Thanks!

Re: Vendors of Products

I have to agree, Darrel Amy is a good choice. At my company we use Printfleet to collect meters. It sends us meter/supply info and we have to input pricing on our own. If you are a Ricoh house, their @Remote service/device is always an option. Not a great option, but hey, it's an option

Re: Vendors of Products

When you say Print Audit, do you mean that you are by-passing Ricoh (Print Director) and getting the product direct from Print Audit? I would be curious to know what the reasons would be for that.

Re: Vendors of Products

For the Facilities Manager we would be going through Print Audit directly. For the PCS Director 6 packages, we of course would be ordering through Ricoh.

Re: Legal Size Booklets?

·
I believe the full lineup of color MFP's can run legal booklets, as long as you can add a booklet finisher to them. I remember that a few years ago this was a big selling point at Monster Mayhem, because only Ricoh manufactured machines could run Legal booklets, whereas the others had to run Ledger.

Thanks...txeagle24. I noticed you mentioned the color MFP's from Ricoh does that do legal booklets from the print driver? Or just at the copier? Do the black MFP's do legal booklets at the machine and print driver?

For booklets, we typically use the RPCS Driver.

Yet, @Remote will collect your customers data and it can be accessed by Ricoh. With the IKON factor looming, you may not want that possibility.

Re: Vendors of Products

While I totally agree with your concern, Ricoh would respond that the data is held by an independent third party and would *never* be made accessible to IKON (even though it goes to a center in Japan, not the US, and even though *you* can't access it until the next day). I guess I'm just too jaded to believe them.

I thank you for the many responses on solutions. I knew if I wanted an answer, the best resource is the p4p. We are looking into the areas everyone suggested, and another avenue is Print Audit Facilities Manager. This program allows us to retrieve meters, receive toner alerts, and service alerts, and may be the better fit for us. The powers to be must decide that, but at least I get some input. Thanks again for your input. As always it is greatly appreciated.

There are advantages to both Printfleet and PA-FM, I hear for local (non-networked)devices PA-FM is great. Just FYI, all the items you listed (Meters, Toner alerts, Service alerts) can be done by Printfleet as well.
