The Week in Copiers Ten Years Ago This Week In 2010, the Second Week of August

Last week all of the manufacturers in the imaging industry posted heavy losses. No one manufacturer was spared from COVID19 losses.  Since I still plan to be doing what I do best for another ten years there are times when I need to think about the future of the Imaging Channel.  Do I think print will go away, naw however I do believe that print volumes will decrease across the SMB space by at least 20%. I also believe there will be we'll see at least a 25% drop in the amount of people that our industry employees moving forward.  Smaller, and nimble could be a good thing!

(A humorous way to look at cost per page with mfp's) In 31 years of selling copiers to commerical accounts, well...I've pretty much seen it all. Over those years I've had many cleints who did not purchase a copier or a multifunctional unit from me. Now, what peeves me the most is when I'm trying to communicate (help) the cost per page of a device or the total cost of ownership of the device. Many accounts will opt for the small MFP's where the manufacturer states "the up to 8,000-page-per-month

I talked to an IT Manager today who told me that if you format a HDD immediately twice in a row, it effectively destroys all useable data on the HDD. Most HDs store data in two parts. The Security Key and the data. Some Data removal software programs only remove the security key. I am told this is like removing the Index from a book and scrambling up the book. The data is still there but needs to be rebuilt.

Jrlz Yup, the move away from the Ratio controller is not a good one. What Ricoh probably saw was that most of the W2400's were being sold with the embedded controller, thus the reasoning for not renewing with Ratio, however on the other end I had heard that Ratio was in horrible financial condition, that may have made theie decision also.

The Week in Copiers 10 Years Ago This Week 2010

There was an interesting topic on the forums 10 years ago

haha "You Wanted the Multifunctional Copier When?"

In this time of COVID I've found that prospecting by email and Linkedin is far better than making calls.  Try and think of it this way, when you're at work you don't want to be interrupted with taking a call. Thus you'll let everything go to voice mail unless that phone number is one that you know.  Emails are are opened all day long and most will read them at a later time.  One of the reasons the subject line is so important.

If the machine is printing a fax, the user will be able to copy the document, meaning it will scan the originals and after the fax has been received the copy process will start, same is true of printing to the device while it is printing a fax.

Re: Canon to Acquire Lexmark?

Neither of these scenarios really make sense to me. Canon does not need A4 engines, they make all of HP's. So why acquire Lexmark? If Ricoh could afford it (both money and integration capacity-wise) that would make more sense. Canon is a proud and rich company and is not going to be acquired by HP or anyone else soon. It made over $30b last year too. HP sees itself as a solutions and service provider, not a manufacturer, it would much rather Canon take care of the manufacturing and the

A fascinating glance at what the CBS news story might have looked like if they'd been honest. To recap... We all understand the ethical "Deal with it first" approach. Unfortunately, this often does not happen in the copier business. I do like your line, "Well, if your new copier vendor did not deal with this well known hidden cost, what else is he not telling you?".

Re: At the end of term, who pays to ship the copier back to the leasing company?

When we decline to return a copier at our cost due to a competitor not doing this at their expense, we do suggest to our former customer two moving companies they can call to pick up the equipment. Of course, we will keep in polite contact over the next few years, as we known when the lease will expire next time.

Often the same Decision Maker is not around 3-5 years from now, so you will have to remind the new DM about the extra freight costs they incurred with their present copier vendor. Plus this time around you will take care of that hassle and expense for them by a line item in your new quotation.

Coming from the lease finance area of the copier industry I know this always ends up in an arguement. so we use a simple Rule If its End of Term (EOT) and the customer is upgrading we take the cost if the deal is at EOT, the customer is returning and going to a competitor, then the customer eats the cost

Identity Thieves Can Hit the Jackpot with Digital Copiers

Buffalo, NY : Most Americans are aware of online security and load their computer systems with anti-virus/anti-spyware. But most aren't aware that digital copier hard drives are loaded with information and are a veritable gold mine for identity thieves . Gone are the days when photocopiers used mechanical devices to reproduce a document. Nearly every copier built since 2002 contains a hard drive that stores every image you scan, copy, and email. I think that if you look at the non-hardware solutions that Ricoh now offers there are many, many that don't involve the printed page. Indeed many of the solutions involve Capture and Storage of printed pages; management of those documents after they're stored and the processing of data streams, be they from computer (laptop, desktop and larger systems), into forms or variable data printing. This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago for the First Week of May 2010

Years ago I use to burn the late night candle pretty often. In some cases I would still find myself emailing a prospect at 2AM in the morning.  In most cases the email was to schedule a meeting for later that week.

Those late night emails was just something I was use to.  It wasn't until one of my clients made mention of the email that arrived at 2AM.  Of course he didn't see it until he arrived at work.  But this client went on to tell me that he wished he had more sales people like me, meaning those that did not consider their job as just 9-5.  This client has been with me for more than 20 years now.

Thinking back it was probably not the pricing, nor the brand of copier, but more about his appreciate for sales people with a great work ethic that landed me the order.

Twenty years later I'm past the point where I send emails that late anymore.  I'm not saying that you should be sending emails that late but what if that  prospecting email at 2AM did hit home with the prospect? What if he or she thought the same as my client did years ago? They could be thinking that this sales person is really working hard to get my business, maybe I should have a meeting to know more about this person.

For those of you that can't burn the candle late. I found this on google for sending delayed emails.  I've never used it but I just might give it a shot to see if it makes a difference. Maybe the same can be true for sending emails on the weekend also.

Schedule an Email to Send Later in Outlook
  1. Compose a message. ...
  2. Go to the Options tab.
  3. In the More Options group, select Delay Delivery.
  4. In the Properties dialog box, select the Do not deliver before check box.
  5. Choose the date and time when you want to send the message.

Old Glory, you are way off-base regarding profitability to Ricoh on an $8,000 sale through the dealer or through their direct channel. When Ricoh sells to the dealer, the dealer is responsible for all ofthe end-marketing expenses related to the brick-and-mortar + sales rep expenses. When Ricoh (or other mfrs) run their own branches, there is a tremendous amount of overhead associated with that operation. Hence, this is one reason why Ricoh's dealer division, while smaller, was the only part

I think we make an error when we assume that Ricoh selling a machine to an end user for $8k is the same as Ricoh selling a machine to a dealer for $8k. When Ricoh sells a machine to a dealer for $8k they are done, when Ricoh sells a machine to an end user for $8k they have other costs, including paying the street rep and his manager so I don't think it is not true to say the $8k is the same to Ricoh from either source.

I like the basics of what I've heard about the product but haven't proposed it to my clients yet. The difficult I'm seeing so far is that I don't sell a lot of single machine transactions to small companies. Most of my prospects & clients have 100-250 employees, so that would mean that to purchase Seat licenses for each user, the MSRP would be $25,499 to $59,998, and my company doesn't publish Sales Cost figures for software solutions. Unless a special case arises, we have to sell it at MSRP.

Re: Can any one help with this Xerox question?

SalesServiceGuy ·
One potential "work around" is to check your Print Drivers for "Hold Print". Similar to the idea of "Private/ Secure Print" but without the need for a password, "Hold Print" jobs usually go into their own print queue, are prepripped and allow a user to arrive at the copier at their leisure to make sure all of the necessary paper is in the copier before they release and immediately print their job. Some copier vendors can alter their print drivers to make "Hold Print" the default setting.

Now that you raise the subject of Consumables, Ricoh allows IKON to purchase heavily from KATUN. IKON has always been notorious for buying non-OEM parts and supplies at deep discounts, which is one of the reason they had a poor reputation for service. Yet, it also helped IKON steal many a deal. Possibly, this practice will change for Ricoh products and they will only source Third Party Aftermarket for theie Canon base at this time.

I would like to hear from anyone that has some insight on the new Bizhub color production 80 PPM system. I heard from a customer that they were shown this unit in a "behind the scenes" preview at Print 09 and that KM would be launching it this spring. From what I gathered, they beefed up the g/m² , changed the feeding mechanism, tighter registration and would share the accessories as the b/w 1200 unit. Very curious to see where it is positioned relative to Ricoh's production products.

there is something not standard about that stream.I've tried it before w/ RPCS, PCL/Universal Print Driver, PostScript and all were complete failures. I put in another box w/ emulated postscript and had some better results but still the output wasn't right and the trays wouldn't switch.. had an SE d/l print streams and send them up the line, on and on.. The thing that is really frustrating about it is to put yourself in the customer's shoes.. they are being pushed around pretty hard right now

I totally agree. The difficult thing is that all of the dealers & direct ops are trained on the same selling features, so even if we are all showing the same data, RBS/IKON will always give the equipment away for nothing, so while the data is good, the value of a local dealer can only overcome so much when their price is 20% lower.

Re: competing against xerox docucolor 252

I agree with Boston Mike's comments on finding out what the prospect is looking for. I have sold the C6501 and C5501 against the Xerox and I have won for certain reasons and lost for other reasons. Xerox has good image quality, but has demonstrated poor paper handling. I disagree that the Xerox 700 has addressed a lot of issues. If you look closely, the 700 engine has not been updated, they are using the same technology as the DC242,252,260 models. The only thing that has been added is a
