Couple of Ideas on How to Move Prospects Closer to the Finish Line

More this year than any other year, I'm finding more prospects that are slow to pull the trigger for the purchase or lease.  The slow down with pulling the trigger balloons your pipeline because you aren't winning or losing.  With the larger pipeline there's also more time spent on managing the prospects that are in the sales cycle vacuum.

Promos and Specials

The question then becomes is how to get these clients to move?  Many of our dealerships have promotions and specials on any given month,  but what happens when the prospects don't take the offer?  In most cases the promotion or special is not perceived as value from the prospect. It is not something that will help the prospect make a BIN (Buy it Now) decision.

Take for instance the current promo for knocking out Toshiba devices,  where the sales person can earn extra trade in dollars for knocking out that Toshiba.  The sales person can use this promotion in various ways.

  • Lower the cost to the client for the purchase or the lease
  • Don't offer the incentive and pocket the extra if and when you get the order

But what happens when the promotion does not align with the prospect?  For example, you have a promotion for knocking out a Toshiba device, however your client has a Xerox.  Thus, there is no promotion that you could offer that may enable the client to make the BIN.

Make Your Own BIN Promos

When it comes to selling you need to be creative to turn nothing into something.  For years I've developed my own promotions to help prospect with BIN.

Something I've been using with recent success to to create my own promotions by using some of my Gross Profit to add value to for the prospect. Thus I'm creating my own promotions and putting a short time limit on that promotion to help facilitate the BIN.

I'll come up with a promotion that I know the prospect will understand the value of the offer for the BIN.  Keep in mind I hate to lower the price but rather offer that perceived value. You also have to tell the story of the reason for the promotion. I go back to our weekly meeting and tell the client that there is a new promotion that was released (yes, it is a promo, it may not be the companies but it is MY promo)

  • With a recent client I created my own promo that gave the client a free PDF license that was available until the 23rd of the month.  48 hours later this order closed.
  • Another client was in that sales vacuum for 90 days from the initial proposal.  They were an existing client with an existing lease.  Three months of the lease paid down,  thus I took those dollars and offered them the first quarter of the maintenance agreement at no cost.  Of course as long as the order by the 23rd of the month.
  • A net new prospect did not align with our Toshiba promo, thus I made one for their Xerox devices that my client has
  • (always keep in mind that in order to make your own promo's you have to have decent GP in your offering, sometimes it takes giving up a little to get a lot)

Closing

The days of the pushy salesperson and the hard close are long gone.   As sales people we need to better understand our prospects needs, and what they value.   Is your service or product perceived as an expense or value?

There is always a reason why the sales process has stalled.  I'm offering up some ideas that have worked for to get the two of us to the finish line.

Always feel free to post a comment or reach out to me if you have any questions.

Cultivating A Digital Mindset In The Office Printer Industry

Cultivating A Digital Mindset In The Office Printer Industry

The past year and a half has seen e-commerce become more than a shopping option for consumers. It is now a habit. Online sales spiked during the 2020 pandemic. But even six months later, digital sales remain much higher than before. E-commerce has exhibited nearly two decades’ worth of growth since 2019, according to a 2020 US Ecommerce Market Report.

And online purchasing habits affect more than consumer retail. Interactions throughout the past eighteen months have trained even business purchasers to search online first. So, how can Managed Print Service (MPS) providers survive in a world that is edging more and more into online retail? By shifting business strategies to embrace both the traditional and the digital.

One Small Step For MPS

Businesses that fail at digital adoption usually fall into two buckets – those who refused to embrace change and those who jump in without testing the waters. What ink, toner, and office printing service businesses must understand is that digital transformation is a long-term strategy. Therefore, implementation requires much more than a laissez-faire attitude.

A robust digital plan will include an evaluation of company goals, target audiences, and a thorough analysis of competitors and clients. For example, why do customers seek your products and services? Why do some businesses go elsewhere for MPS? What differentiates your business from others? What kind of experience do you want to represent your company?

Once goals, targets, and vision are set, it is time to map out implementation. This is where you decide how your MPS business will host a website, manage digital communications, and integrate these digital aspects into your existing sales and customer service. Again, there is nothing wrong with having an extended timeline to allow your business the opportunity to fully integrate each change before tackling the next step in the digital transformation process.

Communication Has Changed

Only 10% in the USA answer all their phone calls

No one picks up the phone anymore. No, really. Nearly 90% of US adults ignore phone calls. Why? Because most of the time, when the phone rings, it isn’t someone you know. Despite efforts from the Federal Communications Commission, robotic calls, or robocalls, have nearly tripled in the past decade to over 3 Billion calls per month. People’s work phone numbers are not exempt.

So, how are people communicating if not by phone? Just like everywhere else, they have gone digital. Buyers are looking for their information online through search engines, email, and social media. The good news is this gives managed print services an excellent opportunity to showcase their businesses. Websites, emails and social allow the office printer industry to highlight their benefits in ways that directly correlate to the needs and preferences of their target audience.

Nearly half (47%) of buyers report having viewed 3-5 pieces of content before they ever contact a sales representative. Popularly viewed content includes product and service features, comparison guides, benefits highlights, infographics, white papers, and interesting statistics. When posted on a company’s website, emailed out, and highlighted in social media feeds, this content helps position the business and its salespeople as reliable, responsive experts in the industry.

Sales Is Social

Like the phone call, cold call sales are pretty much dead. Recent studies show this tactic now provides a bare 0.3% success rate. Social media, however, is helping to create new sales leaders. Over three-quarters of salespeople who use social media regularly outsell their peers. Social users are also more likely (23%) to exceed sales quotas.

Rather than cold outreach, these salespeople build up professional networks on platforms like LinkedIn using engaging content, commentary, and conversation. Then they use these networks to gather insights and intelligence – targeting key decision-makers.

A majority (92%) of buyers who are active on social are willing to engage with those considered thought-leaders or experts in the industry. Over half (62%) are eager to speak directly with salespeople. MPS companies who encourage their salespeople to use company-generated content to sell on social are setting themselves up for future success in today’s e-commerce economy.

Karen Said It Works

People talk. But, more importantly, people listen. Most consumers purchase products based on recommendations from friends, family, and acquaintances. But, just like general e-commerce, this behavior is not limited to consumer retail. Over 80% of business-to-business buyers begin their search with a referral.

In this new digital age, where service is a significant differentiator, managed print services, toner, and ink providers should have a strategy for managing their reviews. And that management should be more than putting out fires when things go wrong. Print businesses should actively ask for reviews for their Google Business page, to post on their website, and to highlight on their social media platforms. Great relationships can lead to great content and a good boost in business.

Getting Started

The most critical beginner tools for taking your Managed Print Services business into the digital world include a high-performing, responsive website and an email marketing kit. In addition, your business website will serve as your hub for initial brand introduction and content hosting.

The best programs will also go above and beyond the basics. Savvy businesses will be sure to partner with platforms that offer what they need to fit their ongoing digital transformation strategy. For example, systems like PowerMPS provide easy-to-use customizable websites and a complete email marketing campaign management system as well as the order and service management, reporting, accounting tools, and other programs most MPS businesses need to find digital success.

Ricoh is definitly sticking to keeping RBS out of current family group accounts, we had a couple of issues with it and the RBS Sales Director had to call the customer and explain they were not able to take the business. Also, I ran into RBS on an MP2400W, they sold it with the internal print/scan, file format convertor, and installation for $8k!!

What if you could actually be more successful without selling? Until now, nearly everyone and everything that you've heard or read about marketing has been aimed at hiding your valuable money-making secret from you. They've been demonstrating the worst possible way for you to get business -- and suggesting (or insisting) you follow their lead. They've told you to sell, sell, sell... advertise again and again... push hard... and then get up the next day and do it all over again! Why? Because

It will be interesting. It might be a good time for some of the independent Ricoh dealers to look to Canon if they have an large Ikon company in their backyard. There is always fallout from these deals, there will probally be some very good Canon sales people looking to jump ship along with technicians.

IKON, Ricoh - with the possibility of ANOTHER BIDDER? there is an "undertone" out there - is there another bidder willing to go after IKON? From Dividends.com, "...This acquisition continues a trend we have been seeing, in which office equipment makers have been acquiring distributors to strengthen their sales channels and product offerings. Ikon has 400 sales and services mainly in Europe and the U.S. Ricoh had recently acquired the European operations of copier service and supply company

We were launched on this late last week. Ricoh has set MSRP at $6,500 but the SUP (Single Unit Price) is $5,800!!! That puts my Sales Cost above the Retail Price.

Not, here but Canon has to be reeling from this! To tell you the truth, I never expected Ricoh to do this.

simply a civilized business transaction between two gentlemen -- Ikon Chief Executive Officer John Stuart and Ray Mundt, Unisource's CEO. For years, the giant company, built on office copiers and paper, had been replicating itself through hundreds of acquisitions across the country. Alco began to take shape in the 1960s when Tinkham Veale, a wealthy Cleveland investor, assembled dozens of firms that included companies in fertilizer, machinery, electronics, coal and ice cream. In 1984, Alco sold

Ok...so Ricoh paid 1.7B for Ikon which has annual revenue's of ~4.5B? Sumding wong! Must be debt! Ricoh also paid $17.25 per share...about 30% higher than the past 2-month average stock price. Obviously there was bidding ante-up going on between Canon and Ricoh for Ikon.

I knew IKON was looking at being purchased awhile back by HP so they have been on the market for awhile. Did I read this correctly... "requires the approval of the majority of IKON’s outstanding shares at its shareholder meeting and will result in IKON continuing as the surviving company" Sounds like IKON will be Ricoh's "brand" now. So the name Ricoh will be no longer or what?

Checked the Sales Info Guide and 90#INDEX is upper limit on Duplex unit. Shouldn't be able to duplex from bypass (smart vs dumb bypass) that weight and type of stock. Can't find the folding specs but 90# Index as a cover should be safe BUT the dependent criteria would be how many sheets and the cover you're going to be folding and stapling.
