Here is some interesting info. The saddle stich unit is identical the one sold by Canon and minolta/konica. But our spec are slightly differnt. For instance the canon can not have a 3 hole punch added. The kon/mon is speced for up to 24lb paper. We can do up to 34lb. Also on the Konica if you saddle stich anything larger the 8 1/2 by 11 then you can only set it for 25 sets or less.

salesreps should be incentivized to promote clicks since that is where the profit is. Think about it...on that connected machine we sold last month, do most of us really care if print volume is actually being driven to our copier? Cell phone reps are incentivized, not by the phones they sell, but by the minutes that are billed. Why? Because the profit is in the minutes, not the phone. Gillette revolutionized the razor business by giving away the razor to sell the blades. Hewlette Packard is the same

If you are talking about service support, they are all under the same umbrella ... and I think we will soon see uniformity among all of the RFG. The Savin dealer I recently left would buy everything at Government pricing. I think it would be obvious to Savin, but I believe for the most part they look the other way

The SmartNet would not work in this case because the wireless print server connected through the parallel port. 3 Simple Strategies To Help You Avoid the Pity Party Blues.

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

While you may encounter setbacks and disappointments in life, it's mission critical that you maintain hope for a bright future.

Let's face it, you're gonna face setbacks and challenges, it's how resilient you become that really matters.

Acknowledge that disappointments are inevitable, yet hold onto hope, as you do have the ability to find the strength to overcome obstacles as you work towards a better tomorrow.

Curious, how many of you have been faced with the temptation to give into discouragement?

Let's face it, bad news and rejection, it's all a part of sales. What's more important is how you handle it.

Spend any amount of time in sales and discouragement inevitably sets in. It’s part of what makes sales unique, as the highs are high, and the lows are low.

Discouragement, disappointment, discomfort, failure, and setback; these can motivate us to new sales heights if we cultivate an empowering mindset. The key is to learn from these experiences while you minimize the amount of time you allow yourself to drown in discouragement.

A discouraging sales day becomes a discouraging week. A discouraging week becomes a month. A discouraging month begets another discouraging month.

When's the last time you allowed yourself grace when discouragement sets in?

We all have our limits. And, sometimes, frustration sets in, getting the best of us.

As a sales professional, getting frustrated is a recipe for disaster. I’m sure you’ve experienced some degree of this within your sales journey.

Discouragement, it messes with your ability to do things correctly, things you normally have no issue in handling. Your sales performance suffers as quotas are not hit which results in even more frustration.

Discouragement is a constant temptation and something that can be a constant companion if you don't have a strategy.

The consummate sales professional consistently asks themselves inward reflective questions. This helps them to avoid succumbing to the pity party known as discouragement.

They self-reflect, asking themselves...

  • The last time I got discouraged, what worked to overcome it?
  • How have the people I look up to overcome discouragement? If so, how did they overcome it?
  • Is being discouraged bringing me closer to achieving sales success?

Knowing the source of discouragement is your first step. You can't take control of something you don't understand.

Change your sales sob story into a sales success story.

AVOID THE PITY PARTY BLUES

"The problem with pity parties is very few people come, and those who do don't bring presents."
Zig Ziglar

Urban Dictionarydefines a pity party as,

A way of experiencing grief, in which you spend your time feeling sorry for yourself and whining endlessly about how crappy your life is.

Personal invitations are usually sent out to colleagues, close friends and loved ones. They attend to comfort your poor soul as you ask yourself what you did to deserve the discouragement and despair.

Pity parties are pitiful. These parties do yourself a great disservice.

This is what you can expect from pity parties:

  1. They are a colossal waste of time.
  2. They are energy vampires.
  3. They affect your performance.

The problem with pity parties is that you'll never be able to see the forest through the trees. You'll never be able to see the goodness in the present moment.

To quote, Dr. Wayne Pernell, a clinical psychologist and member of the Forbes Business Council,

“When we don’t get what we want or feel like we weren’t appropriately validated for the work we did, it’s not uncommon to withdraw into a state of self-pity."

Any of this sound familiar?

Dr. Pernell then goes on to say,

“Self-pity isn’t something a person just suddenly snaps out of. Several pints of ice-cream and numerous friends offering supportive comments don’t make it better.”

I believe that mentally strong people don’t try to gain sympathy from others by complaining about their difficult circumstances.

Mentally strong people simply do something about it... They take action!

3 SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO AVOID THE PITY PARTY BLUES

"Discontent, blaming, complaining, self-pity cannot serve as a foundation for a good future, no matter how much effort you make."
Eckhart Tolle

FIRST STRATEGY: DAILY SELF-REFLECTION

Benjamin Franklin said it best,

"Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

Adapt to it, embrace it and learn to fall in love with early mornings. Think about capturing the first hour of every morning in self-reflection.

Reassess, recharge and recapture the moments through mental exercises is a great way to maintain mental clarity and resilience.

The best way to avoid being hit over the head with the mental hammer is exercise.

Dedicate the first hour of every morning to mental and physical care.

When your mind is not clear, it starts to play tricks on you.

Secondly, reconnect with your values and reflect on them.

Every morning ask yourself:

  • Who am I really?
  • Am I living and staying true to myself?
  • What am I most grateful for?
  • Am I achieving the goals I set for myself?
  • What am I needing most right now?

Self-reflection allows you to gain clarity on what's important, and to focus on what needs to be done differently.

Integrating self-reflection into your morning routine is one of the best ways you can shift your mindset, increase positivity, and uncover a greater connection to yourself.

SECOND STRATEGY: RECONNECT TO GOALS

"All successful people have a goal. No one can get anywhere unless he knows where he wants to go and what he wants to be or do."
Norman Vincent Peale

Striking out, it's all a part of baseball. Guess what? It happens to you in sales. A baseball player who misses out 70% of the time is consider elite.

Please understand that striking out is a part of sales, however; a true sales professional will use this to reconnect to their goals.

Are you lying to yourself?

Many will say they're working towards their goals when in all actuality they haven’t made much progress towards them whatsoever.

The time is now to cut through your own B.S. and mental clutter.

Many simply give up on their goals because they believe it's too hard as opposed to giving themselves a fair shot.

To help you overcome discouragement, take out your sales plan and realize failure is built into it. Reconnect to your activity and drill into your activity as this will help you to avoid frustration.

Reconnect emotionally to your goals. The nice thing about emotionally reconnecting with your goals is that it's inherently personal.

Ask yourself...

  • What do I need to do differently?
  • What am I willing to change?
  • What do I need the most right now?
  • What am I personally struggling with right now and how do I choose to overcome this?

Reconnect and refocus... Does the goal still resonate with you? Why is the goal still important to you?

You may ask yourself:

  • What did I learn that I need more of over the past three months?
  • What did I discover that I need less over the past three months?
  • What do I need to differently over the next three months?

Reconnect to what matters.

THIRD STRATEGY: INVEST IN YOURSELF

"You’re always free to change your mind and choose a different future, or a different past."
Richard Bach

The sales profession and the National Football League are quite similar. Its smash mouth, an in your face, full contact business sport. You're going to get knocked down and you must rise back up. You must take rejection and brush it off just like a quarterback sack.

How many out-reaches need to happen to set up one quality meeting? I don't care what the number is; it's downright daunting.

However, the best sales call you can make, is to yourself. I guarantee you will get through 100% of the time.

Investing in yourself has the single best return on investment and combats being bitten by the discouragement bug. I promise, investing in yourself will have tremendous impact in your life, your well-being, and your ability to perform to the best of your sales ability.

Your sales future will be determined by your willingness to invest in yourself.

Sales professionals who are willing to invest in themselves are better equipped to adapt to changes, overcome challenges, and seize opportunities, thus increasing their chances of long-term success in the competitive sales landscape.

Invest in yourself and stay truer to true.

One must give to themselves first before they can give to others. This takes personal commitment, but the rewards are well worth it.

Investing in yourself packs a powerful punch.

WILL YOU TAKE ACTION?

"Self-pity is easily the most destructive of the non-pharmaceutical narcotics; it is addictive, gives momentary pleasure and separates the victim from reality."
John W. Gardner

Overcoming pity and mass quantities of discouragement is only temporary. You must learn how to process it.

Once you start executing your plan, the discouragement you feel will start to leave just as quickly as it appeared.

Revisit your vision and values. No one achieves success without periods of discouragement and failure.

And most of al... Don't accept the invitation to the self-induced pity party.

It was 15 Years Ago for "HP Edgeline & What Went Wrong"

I am so thrilled that this blog came up in the blog I posted today for This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago.  Fifteen years ago there was much about HPs Edgeline MFP.  Thought I would copy these from my old blog site to here today.

HP Edgeline "What Went Wrong"

I had an email the other day from an analyst from a major printer vendor. In the email I was asked "what went wrong with this program?" I thought, geez your asking me?? I had done a few blogs in reference to the HP edgeline after it's before and after the release. (HP's Touted Edgeline MFP's "Ready to Rock"? & Who's Afraid of HP Edgeline CM8000 Series?)

Here's my response to the analyst:

Where Edgeline Went Wrong! Maybe I should have named it the Death of Edgeline (arrggg!! Greg Walters from The Death of the Copier already scooped me on that! LOL)

HP tried to take copier market share from Copier Manufacturers, even though they put some copier dealers on, HP did not do it's homework on the media and finishing applications that end users need (or maybe they did, but thought they could capture market share based on cpp pricing). I heard from many reps around the country who complained that there was no bookletmaker option, the system could not print or copy thicker stock, no 3-hole punching, Slow FCOT, duplex limitations and limited paper supply and the weight of the unit. If you're going to attack the copier market place, you need to make a copier or MFP centric device, not a printer centric device.

I have client who has an HP MFP because they thought they were getting a good deal on the Internet. Everyone in the office despises the unit because it is not user friendly, I must say over the years that's one thing that the Japanese manufacturers got right "Ease of Use"!

Hey, being on sales for 29 years in the office equipment business you need
to "sell" the sales people, and get them pumped!

The "Edgeline" concept was a good one based on the low cpp of color and monochrome, however end users want more from these systems. They want to be able to print almost anything at any given time. Today' business climate is an "on demand one", I want it now, I need this ASAP, we need to make changes now. With the limited specs of the HP Edgeline, sales people could not recommend these systems to end users and some of the
companies that purchased or leased them wish they had bought something else.

My dealership (the one I work for) was in business for 28 years not once
did an HP DSM come calling on us to take on the product line. I really
don't think HP understands the mentality of the ITEX Dealer Channel. They
understand VAR's, but not dealers. Also, why would a dealer take on their
product when HP is selling the same product on it's web site?????

Dealers need at least 50% MARGINS, in order to "make things happen"
offering anything less in this channel and you're wasting your time and the
dealers time. Guess HP thought that everyone should be happy with 12%
margins.

Is the end result that HP did not know how to sell them? Naw, I just think that they rushed the product to market and didn't "copy" how copier manufacturers market their devices. I remember reading something with the pre-launch of Edgeline in reference to HP thinking that they would capture 35% of the volume in "x" amount of years in the ITEX channel! I wonder if that guy still has a job?

Couple of other items I heard, not sure if it's true or not, the entire Edgeline team was laid off, support was moved to Singapore and their may or may not be a second gen HP Edgeline. If there is a second gen, they'll have to dump the "Edgeline" which will be synomous with "New Coke", "Ford Edsel", "BenGay Aspirin", "McDonalds Deluxe", "Apple Lisa", and "Windows Vista".....and the list goes on

Alright so, first things first - the Edgeline is not dead.

Edgeline technology is sound. 95% of print in the world is ink based, not toner...

The MC80X0 unit is perfect when placed in the proper environment...typically not churches, or color production or SMBs or home offices.

These systems fit in nicely for companies that have a real, honest to goodness IT Department, with a CIO.

Booklet maker? Blah! how many really use the option? I have seen the same amount of dust on Canon booklet makers as in the 11x17" paper tray.

Hole Punch? Again, does anybody, besides schools and CRDs still use these? If it is a "requirement", I just roll cases of pre-punched paper into the service agreement.

I have always felt that the "no finishing options" argument was a lazy sales persons way to get out actually selling.

I have also felt the "it's too expensive..." argument another lazy sales person's mantra...

To date, I have not seen the Edgeline offered on the web, EBay does not count. And even if it is, it's called "value add selling" - nobody can get that off the internet.

Once the unit is set up, it is Bullet Proof - I have many units in the field performing flawless.

And people prefer the user panel compared to any other manufacture's - hands down.

Some of the new Edgeline dealers that came out of the copier channel used the Edgeline to spin off other manufacturer sales.

And unfortunately, HP under estimated it's current IT channel's ability to actually SELL - not take orders.

Also, in the copier world, MIF can be converted over to a different manufacturer - like Canon into Ricoh, over at IKON.

HP had no MIF.

HP partners had no MIF.

HP VARs...had no...well you get the point. I doubt any of them really knew what MIF was...

Bottom line:

The "problems" with Edgeline are channel/partner related - it seems HP did not investigate the market(copier) before getting in.

But here is the rub, HP does not want to be a "copier" manufacturer. The do not want to "copy" how copier manufacturers market - they are trying to redefine the model.

And guess what, if anyone can redefine anything, it is HP.

HP is the only organization around who could absorb such a mistake.

Great Post!

Greg, I have to disagree with you on many levels (and agree with you on some).

First, for now, yes, it IS dead. It's not currently being produced, so I'd call that dead until they decide to revive it.

Second, "people prefer the user panel compared to any other manufacture's". Wow. I can't imagine whose control panel your customers were using before, but I have had an entirely different experience. Compare the steps to scan to email or clear a misfeed on the HP vs. Canon or Ricoh. The Canon and the Ricoh will win every time, "hands down".

Regarding the finishing options, I agree, they aren't that important. And, if they really are to that particular customer, sell them something else.

I agree with you that HP is trying to redefine the market. I can see some good things in their attempt, but even you admit that the Edgeline was a "mistake".

I also agree that HP was the only one who could survive such a mistake and not even really blink. They will learn from their mistakes and move on to the next generation of machines that may actually succeed.

Jason - very good points.

Yes, no production, and lots of inventory.

Yes, they did lay off the Edgeline Team, and move functions off-shore.

From my prospective, I guess I am comparing "Edgeline Death" to the "HP9055/9065 Death". Having gone through that little escapade with HP/IKON personally. Again, a failure on so many levels.

The next few months will be very telling, obviously, if they don't start up production again - light the candles.

User Panel - yeah, ok, I can sell the Ricoh and the Canon, and yes, even the Kyocera user panels...but none of them have "live video" to show how to remove a mis-feed - my current Edgeline clients/users (100's not 1000's) seem to like that, as compared to their now exiting fleet of Xerox's, Oce, K/M, Sharp and Imagistics.

Indeed, I doubt the down the street business would care that the user menu on the Edgeline is the same as their fleet of 4345's.

Specifically to your "scan to email" issue. I have heard this often as an argument against the Edgeline and I do not understand it.

My client's scan-to-email experience involves, selecting the scan-to-email option, choosing or entering the email address and hitting send...that's all.

And if they authenticate, scanning back to their desktop/email can be even easier. Also, I currently advise clients to scan back to their email and then send out from their email at their desk - securing a digital copy in their outbox - regardless of the scanning hardware in place.(Canon, Ricoh, Xerox, etc.) Regardless, the process is almost identical to the Ricoh's or E-Copy machines.

Selling against the Edgeline is easy to be sure - which is why knowing where to sell it so important and HOW to sell it is very important. HP missed the boat on that issue, they didn't have a firm grip on the "how" so they struggled to convey the message...

Jason, great insight - nice post.

Art - I was thinking the same thing - if you need to have a video showing how to clear a mis-feed, than aren't you admitting that your hardware will indeed fail?

But- HP studied how users would come up to a copier, see the "wrench" on the display and leave - so often was this observed, the engineers decided to address this issue; with the video.

I was skeptical - but after an end user raved about the "...man on the screen showed me..." how to go get a jammed paper, and the electric bread crumbs led her to error- she loved it and it convinced me.

Well, I worked on the Edgeline team in hardware engineering (and am no longer with HP). The Edgeline program was driven by two managers who were obsessed with "grabbing copier pages." VJ had a PowerPoint slide showing the number of pages printed annually for numerous purposes, and on numerous devices (eg office prints, books, newspapers, copiers, offset press, etc). VJ showed the slide everywhere he went, and began referring to the many copier pages as "the big bar." The second manager was an R&D section manager who was obsessed with building a page-wide array device that could print across an entire page without moving the printhead.

There were many within R&D and marketing who drank the kool-aid, and most were "yes men" who bought the big bar dream, even though it had a peculiarly bitter taste. But there were others who quickly saw the insurmountable marketing barriers (channels, distribution, margins, support, lack of finishing partners, etc) and R&D barriers (dry time, paper thickness limitations, nozzle clogging, material costs, etc). But of course, the realities were glossed over when it came to selling the program up to VJ and Hurd.

It was a classic case of Emporer's Clothing. The dream clouded reality, big time. A few of us bailed out of the team (just as well, as we were "too negative"), and joined other saner groups at HP's Vancouver division. We knew Edgeline was going to hit the fan. Hard. I won't tell you how many millions were poured down the Edgeline black hole. I am only now shaking off the ugly memories and doing a quick web search to read about the aftermath, and found most of the comments here to be insightful.

Looks look Canon is still going after the big bar. But at least they seem to know how....

First and foremost the fact is, that HP has the worst after sales support. It is horrible and a total mess to get around. They need to clean their act just like GM did. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians.
Totally factual and true:
It’s a fact HP does not understand the mentality of the Dealer Channel. They understand VAR's, but not dealers. Also, why would a dealer take on their product when HP is selling the same product on its web site?
Dealers need at least 50% MARGINS, in order to "make things happen"
offering anything less in this channel and you're wasting your time and the
dealers time.

Now let’s talk about the EDGELINE; to dump this product is again another stupid decision from HP and let me tell you why.
What makes a copier more expensive than its little brothers is always speed first and foremost. OK - it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles in terms of booklet maker and other accessories but who cares anyway, most don’t even use it. And if you do need one, you can buy a standalone unit for less than $5000 that can do the job better and more efficiently anyway.

But let me tell you why an EGDELINE is an incredible machine even though I would have designed it differently in order to accept more paper variations and weight. What drugs were HP on when they designed this thing is inconceivable. Here’s what I would do with this unit with minor modifications - that could break the bank and kill the competition.

First of all, in case you didn’t know, this copier is capable of produce more than 150 copies a minute and apparently even up to 250 copies a minute. They just haven’t figured out how to handle the paper on the output tray. Could you imagine if you could produce 150 to 250 colour copies a minute. It would be the only unit at this price break that would kill the competition almost instantaneously. But not only this. You can‘t beat the greyscales and the blacks that come out that those units. All laser copiers with time, loses its’ quality because of the fact that there are too many accessories touching the paper. Fuser, pressure roller etc. On an Edgeline nothing touches the paper. And therefore you are always going to get amazing grey scales, blacks and colour gradation.

Even if they would change the Edgeline to an only black and white copier at 150 to 250 copies a minute it would be amazing. You have to spend over $170,000 to get that with a XEROX Nuvera and over $350,000 with an OCE 6000. Why do I know so much about this unit because I own one? I make over 70000 colour copies a month and instead of paying 7 to 12 cents a click like my competitors, I pay half and get to keep the rest in my pocket for a change. The blacks and greys are better than a Xerox Nuvera and the OCE 6000 series at $350,000. I paid my Edgeline less than $15000. Now guess who going to bank more often.
Too bad HP still can’t get it right.

Post prosessing is very important to a copier/printer (our customer are schools, print shops, the government etc).
If they can copy/print a complete job with folding, printing and maybe punching they save a lot of manual work.
We sells tons of staples for copiers.
After the schools discovered how to make A4 booklets from A3 paper - our sales have increased a lot. And the use of A3 paper is now almost 15%. More than A5 (4%).
The total number of prints has also increased a lot, since they now can produce most of their documents on the copier.

We have focused on teaching them all the possibilities inline finishing can do. We have now almost managed to get rid of all of the HP printers they used to have. On an average small school each copier makes about 500k - 1,5 mill extra impressions a year.

We have even been consulted in the design process of a few new schools - where we have designed the locations for the MFPs.

Two big MFPs in center of the building, and smaller at locations around the building.

Software have moved large jobs to the biggest machines with the cheapest prints. They have also started to print major jobs at night, so the machines will be free at regular business hours.

Now we wait to see what will happen with ComColor and MemJet printers...

I have noticed that Ricoh and Kyocera is not among the brands that gets "shot down" on the MemJet page.. And both have good finishing options..

You may only get a chance to get out two or three sentences before the customer stops you to say they have no interest, so make them count. Don't assume they need something - this is very off putting. Instead, ask the

Why do you suppose this type of document has been so difficult to make easily available by Ricoh? I don't feel like anyone at Ricoh really cares if you sell something to an end user that doesn't work as promised. At least if you have a good relationship with the customer, you can drag the manufacturers' name through the mud with you.
