Why a Copier Salesperson Loves to Sell DocuWare

You probably don’t know me but I’ve been in the industry now for over 20 years and have been fortunate to be successful selling Canon, Ricoh and Kyocera products in both hardware and software sales.

I remember when I started it was all about hardware. I used to say “black and white paid the bills and color sent me on vacation”. Back in those days a color sale would be $40,000 plus and would always be a generous commission. I remember speaking with another colleague of mine back then who had been in the industry for many more years than I and told him “ I wanted to be a color specialist”. His response was why “would you want to only sell color”? Those words rang true and I learned much from him in our years together.

I’m guessing your dealership has a document management networking team that supports sales for products like Docuware. Long ago I realized this gave me another arrow in my quiver and allowed me to position myself as an expert salesperson in our industry. Why would I just want to sell Canon, Kyocera and Ricoh when I have other software applications to offer my clients?

At first the sale may seem daunting as it is a far cry from feeds and speeds. I suggest you take the time and learn two different departments. Accounts payable and Human Resources. It doesn’t matter the industry, these departments function almost identical in every business and if you could “speak their language” you’ll unlock the door to more sales.

In my experience these sales are also very profitable as they replace labor which is often an exceptionally high cost for business. So… look around your clients and prospects offices and see if you can find boxes of paper (which I’m sure you will). Ask about Accounts Payable and Human Resources and you will find opportunities that will help businesses streamline their processes, make them more efficient and profitable and will rely on you as their trusted business partner.

Bring in your Docuware representative or network specialist and listen to the language they use. Once you’ve done it a few times you can approach any business and add value.

Note from Art:  Monte has been a Print4Pay Hotel longer than I can remember. I'm thinking 15 years at least. Monte is one my peeps in my inner circle of connections in the industry. A Selling From The Heart Professional Is Not A Sales Settler!

"Complacency is the enemy of study. We cannot really learn anything until we rid ourselves of complacency."
Mao Zedong

I applaud DirecTV with their bold and 'direct' ads on TV. They continue to make an impact within the cable TV wars; but they've also made a substantial impact within the sales world (more in a bit).

In a sales campaign from a few years ago, they play on one single phrase which showcased a frontier-era family in a suburban neighborhood stuck in antiquated ways such as a horse-and-buggy and, by the way, cable.

“We’re settler's son, we settle for things,” explained the father in “Neighbors” when his son politely asked why they can’t have DirecTV like their modern neighbors. In another spot, “Satisfaction” boasted of DirecTV and how they outperformed cable TV in customer satisfaction, highlighting the family’s own means of satisfaction: a stick and hoop, a faceless doll, cabbages and foot-stomping.

Settling, complacency, contentment, relaxed, peaceful; it's out there right now hiding within the closet of many sales teams. Lurking in the dark shadows of their success and camouflaged where you least expect to find it, a great balancing act of excuses. It's the silent business killer, ambushing and striking sales teams without warning. It can bring even the biggest and brightest teams to their knees. What's this hidden terror, settling!

A sales reps' biggest competitor is the status quo

It can happen to you? It strikes with extreme precision. Settling, it happens so please don't fool yourself. Settling is a ruthless disease. It doesn't care about how long you've been in sales or what day of the week it is. It cares only of the cold and timid, the hard reality behind this is while you've become content a selling from the heart professional has not. They have meticulously rewritten the sales playbook.

"You are where you want to be"
Keenan

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Unguarded, the 'settling' disease has been lurking within the sales broom closets for quite some time. This didn't happen overnight, this happened because of a whole bunch of small decisions over time.

LACK OF GOALS

A monthly quota, sure it's a goal, however; what about your personal goals? What's your vision and values? Are you operating with a wish or hope list rather than a must have list? Where's the burning desire? Where's the drive? Where's the fortitude? Where's the plan?

NO PRESSURE FROM MANAGEMENT

There may be some disagreement as some sales reps will bitch regarding their sales manager constantly riding their backs. However, most sales manager's focus on the underperformers; spending less and less time focusing on the top performers. I’ve been in bullpens and heard mutterings of “I don’t care what they’re doing as long as they’re hitting their numbers”. Coach, coach and coach! This is why sports dynasties exist.

TIRED AND JADED

Often times this radiates with sales reps who have been with the same company for decades or within the same industry for eons, doing the same thing; particularly if their sales role hasn’t progressed.

They’ve been seeing the same clients for years. Day after day, month after month talking about the same products, same services to the same people, monotony of their activity shows up in their attitude towards pushing themselves to the next level; leading to apathy, complacency and taking their clients for granted.

Unless these sales reps find a way to invigorate more energy and interest back into their role, most will just mutter along in mediocrity until something shakes them out of the state they are in. Unfortunately, this translates into losing a client or the threat of losing their job.

"Salespeople have hypnotized themselves into believing what they aren't doing doesn't work"

STOKE THE FIRE

Where's the drive? Stoke the fire of passion that drives you to do the hard work to be a true one-percenter. Ignite the fire from within!

There is a great quote by my man Keenan within his book, Not Taught...

"There isn't the luxury of time. We used to say, wait until this crisis is over and we'll get back to normal, but that never happens. We have to be change animals" Michelle McKenzie, President & CEO, Canadian Tourism Commission

The luxury of time no longer exists. Settling has become a rampant epidemic within sales departments. Time is of the essence, as Michelle states, "we have to be change animals"

How are you stoking the fire? Listen to the latest episode of the Selling from the Heart podcast, as we're joined by Keenan who I guarantee will stoke the fire!

HEARTFELT PROFESSIONALS DON'T SETTLE, THEY CREATE CHANGE

Speaking of change animals, I have been inspired by the friendship I have developed with Keenan. He smacks change right across the top of the head and strongly challenges the status quo. Keenan brings an acute awareness and understanding that acceptance of change is critical within the information age we live in. This applies directly to the settler's mentality.

We have only three responses to change - resist it, accept it or create it. A change resistor likes things just the way they are. A change acceptor will wait to see what is happening. While change creators have become today's problem solvers.

Become the change creators in your industry. Take charge of your journey. Take the journey of self-discovery. Who are you? Why are you doing what you're doing?

I encourage you to pick up my first book, "Selling From The Heart, How Your Authentic Self Sells You" as this will stoke your fire!

DO THE HEART WORK

A selling from the heart professional, creates change and pulls organizations forward.

A selling from the heart professional takes action!

A selling from the heart professional identifies new processes, looks for new opportunities, brings new and different insights into businesses with the goal of helping corporate executives solve business problems or challenges.

A selling from the heart professional adopts the mentality focused on helping their prospects and clients for all the right reasons versus closing the "big deal" for their personal benefit.

Lead with your heart and not your wallet

I understand, I get where you all are coming from. Every day, I walk in your shoes. I am fully committed to helping your sales team integrate social aspects and modern strategies into your current sales process to grow new business. I want you to get results. This is why I am passionate about doing this the right way, the genuine way, the authentic way! It's about understanding value before visibility.

Selling From the Heart is almost here! I poured my heart into every page of this book and I think you're going to love it. Enter your email address here in this hyperlink and you'll be updated as the book is released. New Ricoh MP C501SP "A4 or A3 or a New Hybrid MFP?"

The first time I heard about the new Ricoh MP C501SP was a pic that a Print4Pay Hotel member posted on this site. That pic came from the recent Ricoh Convergence in Las Vegas a few months ago.

I took a good long look at the device that's positioned as an 50 page per minute color A4 device. My first thoughts is well, it kinda looks too big, it looks very similar to another Ricoh device, and it looks like the MP C501SP has an A3 style document feeder. Alright, its just a pic, I'll just have to wait and see what's the deal behind this new color A4 50ppm device.

Yesterday I needed to create a configuration page from the Aficio League for a recent order. There it was, the configuration page for the new Ricoh MP C501SP. I then checked for the brochure, and the sales information guide. I was in luck both were posted up on the site. It was reading time!

What I found

  • Document Feeder holds 220 sheets of paper
  • Document Feeder is a single pass feeder capable of scanning @180 images per minute
  • Document Feeder maximum paper size is 11x17
  • Each Paper tray holds a max of 550 sheets of paper
  • Tray one is dedicated letter
  • Additional paper trays hold 550 sheets of paper and max out at legal size paper
  • Optional 50 sheet stapler
  • Weight of the device is 197lbs

Whoa, stop the presses!  All of these specs are identical to the A3 color MFP's (MP C2004, 2504, 3004, 3504, 4504). The only difference is that the MP C501SP can't print ledger (11x17).

I checked out the pictures of the paper trays, and each of three optional paper trays seem to have a plastic insert/guide that does not allow for ledger size paper to be installed.

What is it?

What we have is an A3 MFP disguised as an A4 MFP.  I'm okay with this since I can also sell the crap out of scanning 11x17 on an A4 print device. The color speed of 50ppm is also fantastic.  As far as volume goes, the MP C501SP's sweet spot is between 5k-15K pages per month.

All is well and good with the features too. It also seems that the MP C501SP will be the first A4 device using the A3 cost per page model.  That's a win, win also.

My Thoughts

I'm trying to figure out how to put this with out offending some peeps.  Many manufacturers now produce one color print engine that is capable of different speeds. It's the same box, the same print engine, the only difference is the speed and some options aka accessories.  I'm in the camp that believes that the manufacturers should just give us one box and dealers can then purchase a speed license.  Think of the time that's saved from ordering and how about the savings on parts, accessories and supplies.

The MP C501SP isn't going to be a game changer when it comes to the price of the hardware.  But, it can make a big difference when you're comparing the TCO compared to traditional A4 MFP's.  We will have the A3 cost per page model with an A4 MFP.

I'll be posting more in the upcoming days on this device.

Slumps Happen... 3 Tips To Beat the Sales Funk

"My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging."
Hank Aaron

Just keep swinging... It’s happened to all of us: One month, we're hitting home runs out of the sales ball park; the next, we're swinging and missing on every sales opportunity.

We've all been aboard the sales train wreck before. You fail to secure an important sale. You have a series of bad days. Worse, you struggle to sell to your own clients. You can't seem to disentangle yourself from its deadly grip. You're in a sales slump.

"Sales slumps don’t discriminate"

Even heavy sales hitters have bad days, bad months and even bad quarters -- it’s how they get through it that makes the difference.

Sales is a mental sport, and slumps happen to everyone. Slumps can happen to any of us, a sales slump is especially unfortunate, as making sales is how sales reps makes a living. No sales, no commissions; makes for empty pockets.

WHAT'S A SALES SLUMP

A slump is any decrease in sales performance. It happens over time, not just one bad day. A slump may start without much harm. You might simply lose a sale. It may bother you a bit. You lose another sale and now you're getting pissed off.

Then, your manager makes the comment, "you might be in a slump." You struck out again. It's at that point, you decide you're in an 'official slump'. Depression sets in as anger fuels it, making it worse. Your poor results worry you even more. All you begin to think about is the slump as it "gets into your own head" way too much.

Every sales professional goes through seasons of frustration and even despair. There is an aspect of sales that is very emotional.

"Let the negative emotions fester and they can drag you down, shipwrecking your career."

SALES IS RAW AND EMOTIONAL

One moment, you're on top of the sales mountain and unfortunately the next, you find yourself tumbling down the side of a cliff. Sales is raw. Sales is emotional. Sales is not for the weak at heart!

There are four season's in a year. We have seasons in our sales career. Quite frankly, nobody wants to talk about it. If you've been in sales for any length of time, you know sh%t happens.

You lose one of your largest accounts. You miss budget over a series of quarters. You make a string of bad decisions such as failure to prospect and then the funnel dries up!

“The cumulative impact of many poor decisions, slips in self-disciplines, and things put off until it is too late.”
Jeb Blount

You go from being hungry and aggressive too complacent and bored. Once was an exciting career becomes a drudgery and routine. You hit the funk! It starts to wear on you!

THE SALES FUNK

The person who can control the sales funk is YOU. Take a step back and become a bit vulnerable with yourself.

What's your morning ritual?

How about every morning set aside 30 minutes to reflect? What did yesterday look like? What will today look like? What can I do better? Find problems when they are pebbles as opposed to boulders rolling down the side of a mountain.

You may be getting out of a sales funk, coming out of a sales funk or you will be in a funk. Nobody knows it but you. You may be spinning out of control or somehow lost your way, it happens! You're burned out! What are you going to do about it?

BREAKING OUT OF THE SALES FUNK

What can you do when you find yourself in this dark place, the sales funk zone? What can you do to rescue yourself from it? Stay in it and you'll submarine your career.

"Negativity fuels all of those emotions to the point that it consumes your every thought."

Acknowledgement

You're the only person you knows immediately that you're in the funk zone. Admit it and put it out there. It's ok! Confide in your manager, a friend, a mentor or even a teammate but more importantly; do something about it.

Step one in the process is just own it. Put some light to it.

Pride

Check your pride out at the door and admit you need to do something about it.

Professional athletes go into slumps. However, what makes them different is they've set their pride aside and seek help. They increase their levels of practice, planning and preparation. They don't blame others. They don't make excuses. They go back to the basics.

Your clients and prospects sense desperation mode when you're in the funk zone, as you spew your commission breath all over the room.

Suck up your pride and start prospecting consistently again!

As my friend Jeb Blount so eloquently says...

“The brutal fact is the number one reason for failure in sales is an empty pipe, and, the root cause of an empty pipeline is the failure to prospect.”

Invest in your Heart

When you're slumping, dig in and find out what’s in your heart and mind? What is it that you really want to change?

Invest in yourself and self-reflect. Reflection time is about taking care of yourself. Taking care of yourself is the first step forward in breaking the funk. We all know the phrase: “You have to take care of yourself, nobody else is going to do it!”

Meet with yourself every morning and ask yourself a few of these questions...

  • How am I feeling?
  • How is my energy?
  • What do I need to align?
  • What am I willing to do about it?

In the professional world of sales, we will all find ourselves in a sales slump. When that happens a true sales professional will recognize it early and then take the steps needed to minimize the slump, and turn it around fast.

Is This the Beginning of the End for the Padding of Lease Rates?

First off, I'm no expert in the equipment leasing business; however, but I have some peeps that are.  A few days ago I caught a thread on Linkedin reposted from @KeithHachey (Americorp Financial LLC).  See the pic below.

The first item that caught my eye was the hashtag #leases and then the text at the bottom for "Impact of Senate Bill 1235 on Equipment Leases.

Of course I followed the link and it lead me to the web site for the State of California Legislative for Senate Bill 1235.  Bill 1235 relates to commercial financing in the State of California and the disclosure of the following.

22803.
 (a) As an alternative to the disclosures required in subdivision (b) of Section 22802, a provider who offers commercial financing that is factoring or asset-based lending and that offers the recipient an agreement that describes the general terms and conditions of the commercial financing transaction that will occur under the agreement, may provide the following disclosures as an example of a transaction that could occur under the general agreement for a given amount of accounts receivables:
(1) An amount financed.
(2) The total dollar cost.
(3) The term or estimated term.
(4) The method, frequency, and amount of payments.
(5) A description of prepayment policies.
(6) The total cost of the financing expressed as an annualized rate.
(b) This section shall remain in effect only until January 1, 2024, and as of that date is repealed.
From what I'm reading, this means that if a business enters into an equipment lease all of the above information needs to be disclosed to that business.
For years and years many in our industry has been using "padded" lease rates.
Let me give an example of "un-padded rates"
A leasing company gives a lease rate to the dealer for 60 months.  That rate to the dealer is let's say .0186 for the 60 month term.  In order to figure the payment, we take the dollar amount of the lease and multiply it by the rate factor.  Let's use $10,000 is the purchase price. 10,000 * .0186 = $186.00. The payment for the business would be $186.00 for the term of 60 months.  This would be an example of a lease rate that is not "padded".
The example of a "padded" lease rate would be the following
The rate from the leasing company is still the .0186 for the 60 months, however, the dealer increases the rate factor to the sales force to .0202.  Using the same purchase price of $10,000 and multiplying it by .0202 makes the lease payment $202.00 per month. The payment is now $18 higher per month for the term of the lease.  The dealer profits $18.00 per month for the 60 month term. The dealer makes an additional profit of $1,080 on the lease.
The way I'm seeing this is the dealer or the leasing company now has to disclose all of those financing items to the business.  Thus instead of the purchase price being $10,000 it should be disclosed as $11,080. Along with the annualized rate.
I am not the expert in the language for Senate Bill 1235.  I'm hoping that Keith can chime in on this blog and verify what hoops dealers and leasing companies will need to jump through in order to provide office equipment leasing in the State of California.
I titled the "Is This the Beginning of the End for the Padding of Lease Rates?" because I'm not a fan of the practice.  I do not believe the "padding" of lease rates is illegal, it's just not the thing to do. If a dealer or a direct manufacturer  needs more dollars then just increase the price of the equipment and stop back end process.
We know our law makers, and they will pretty much do anything to make the States extra revenue.  The Bill allows requires that the lending institutions that are listed also need a license. I'm sure there is a fee for that.  Thus, a Bill like this may becoming to your state or even my state.
Keith are you out there?

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The Second Week in September 2003

I took the time to re-read and correct some of the grammar and spelling issues that plagued me from many years ago. I'm a copier sales person and not an English major. Please excuse typo's or grammar.  Anyway, I must have wrote this after the Ricoh purchase of Ikon and the title "MFP Wars". After the re-read, I realized that we're still fighting the MFP Wars, whether it's the low cost per pages that are low balled or the continuing battle of A3 vs A4. Somethings never change.

Enjoy the threads from ten years ago this week!

Xerox also scaled back a business that makes wide-format printers for engineers and architects. That was one reason the company completely vacated two buildings in East Rochester with 170,000 square feet of space. Xerox’s cutbacks also resulted in extra space at company-owned buildings downtown and in Webster and Henrietta. And Farnan said Xerox is spending millions of dollars in Rochester to improve and renovate those sites. Some of the leased space is being vacated to fill the empty offices

I am not sure if the postscript option will allow you to print direct without the file conversion. I have autocad lite 2000 on my laptop and could send you a few .plt files. All you have to do to convert the files to that format is check the plot to file box in autocad when you are printing. It will create a PLT file instead of a DWG file and you should be able to do

You need to make sure that you have the PostScript option installed. You will not be able to print from the DOC server or use anything like scan router, DTB etc. Just remember, all of the applications that come with it are windows based and all you can really do is print and scan to email if their network will support it. You will have to install the accessories manually and then you can use them. Otherwise, that should be the only major thing

So what scanning do you have, just Twain? Also, do you have any job binder type features or not? The network right now is one mac with a color laser printer connected with a USB cable. Jive is pretty much for the big boys. It seems Ricoh will partner with Jive for selling overall MDS solutions to it's customers. I like this.... and I think that building the social media space for companies can be an untapped resource for sales.More to follow on this in a featured blog

Savin C9120 Scan to Email Problem

·
I have a weird situation at a long term customer's office. They have 2 Savin C9120s and 1 Savin 8025. They were all scanning to email. Now the C9120s can connect to the mail server and the memory goes back to 100% when sending email. However, the recipient never receives the email. Exchange, Yahoo, Gmail, no destinations are receiving the email. All 3 systems have the same identical configuration. They are all using Comcast mail server, exchange or alternate SMTP servers are not an option and

In an interview, Reil Rackham said that in tough times the key to success is focus: put all of your resources into your best opportunities. Here area list ofthings I've done to help maximize my sales as much as possible: 1. Make a committment to stick things out through the hard times. 2. Sell the relationship today, sell a copier tomorrow. 3. Start an email list. 4. Have my cheapest MFP

31 Ways to Close more Business (3 of 31)!

·
Whether you're selling MFP's, Document Management, and even Managed IT, there is always a time to close. A good sales person is an excellent listener, and if you listen well enough in most cases, you'll know when to ask for the order. Asking for the order can be as simple as...... 3. Lease or Buy Close (either or): When you’re asking the questions, save this one for last. “Were you planning on leasing of buying the system?” If leasing, bring out the lease form and start filling in the blanks

Calendar on-line scheduling application

·
So, I'm looking for help here. Here's the scenario. Company with 50 reps, these reps are given sales leads on a daily basis. The Lead manager wants to be able to view everyone's calendar and then distribute leads via populating them in the sales persons calendar. His call center is scheduling appointments, so he would need to review who's open to get the lead. The lead manager would then schedule the appointment with the on-line system and the sales person would either get an email or text

I've had recent success speaking to law firms about document management and accurate chargebacks to their customers. The ability to archive and index searchable documents is a big time saver for law firms. Here are some good high-level questions to ask: How do you accurately chargeback prints to your clients? Do you use PC law? How often do you outsource color prints for special clients? How do you manage your paper documents? Where do you store your paper documents? How much is it costing you

Continuously Modify

“If you are forced to change you waited too long and should have Modified along the way.”

Well, everything must end or at least it gets depleted. We have all found ourselves saying. “What do you mean that doesn't exist anymore.”

“Customers buy outcomes; the means to their achievement always modifies.”

Today we must Constantly Modify. If you're forced to change you waited too long. The marketplace customers either of business to business or business to the consumer are modifying quickly and those waiting for the right time to change will prove they can't tell time. The most overused and meaninglessly three words in business “We Love Change.” And most who say it can’t even park in a different spot at the office parking lot without a meltdown. More organizations and industries are refusing to evolve through modification and find themselves being forced to change missing out on the opportunities to align with their evolving customers. Many of today’s customers’ are modifying much quicker than those who used to service them.

“Looking where the customers are going always proves to be much more valuable than looking to maintain where customers currently are.”

The world of commerce has no patience for accepting tired or outdated ways. Your customers never thought it was up to them to accept your outdated ways for your survival. The options available today as replacements to-old static deliverables are more and more plentiful from the disrupter.

Today many products remain as they were, however, their market disruption comes from a different competitor who innovates the products delivery. Disrupters who change the game. Uber, Netflix, Amazon, Airbnb to name a few. The question is who is coming for you or your industry? I suggest it should be you.

“Sometimes thinking that people will always use your product could be correct, however, temporary. The real threat is someone new delivering your product completely different than you, and creating a better customer experience.”

The new competitor today is comprised of teams who don’t even understand what needing buy-in means. The new competitors or the old competitors who are constantly modifying both have teams that understand nothing is sacred unless the customer says it's sacred and they are not afraid to ask.

Innovative organizations understand that relevancy is a constant journey, not a destination and they will always welcome the customer of the old way on their journey.

Most who follow business news have heard the talk of Dunkin Donuts taking Donuts from their name. I believe that is genius. Dunkin Brands gets it. They do not intend to be held hostage by a stubbornness to modify like so, many we see fading away.

Obviously, Dunkin' leadership has the courage to Modify their deliverable including their name. I don’t think Dunkin' management teams are meeting in the conference room talking about how they must save yesterday’s value. Instead, they are focused on delivering the value that today’s customers defined. At the same time, Dunkin' is focusing on what they see in the future and bringing it to their present.

Constant Modification takes the willpower of strong teams. Teams who can look in new places with open minds will always surprise those who remain in yesterdays landscape.

"Status Quo is the killer of all that will be invented."
