If you doubt it just ask someone who is not in the industry “what type of copier do you have?” The answer will either be I don’t know, or I think it is a…, so much for brand loyalty. Correct in a way. It really depends on how well your dealer principal can negotiate rates. Most leasing companies are within ticks of each other anyway. We choose to add points to our rates to add additional means of profit. Even with points our rates are competitive given our sales area. I feel at this point in time with where the market is USXL has the leasing game down.

It seems when looking at disrupted industries you see the familiarity of a false sense of comfort. When products decline in need, they also decline in value. Those two things are tied together. Value propositions are hypnotic; they can hijack the common-sense of reality during market shifts causing the disease of Product-Centric Thinking.

The speed of innovation disrupting a deliverables current circumstances continues increasing. Today innovation not only changes the customer’s desired outcome. Innovation also changes the customers means to the desired outcome. These innovative changes to the means are what causes the collapse or, the massive disruption to legacy deliverables.

An example of disruption:

People still hire vehicles to take them from point A to point B. However, many of the traditional means to this achievement were utterly disrupted. The value proposition of the Taxi industry and Car Rental industry is now a whole lot less valuable to the many who left for the better experience provided by the rideshare deliverable.

Don’t let your perception of your value-add become out of alignment with your customer's viewpoint. More importantly, don’t make the mistake your perception is correct. Things continually modify with or without the permissions of those threaten by the results of the modification. Sooner or later the way the customer wants to achieve their desired outcomes will in-fact modify.

Many Innovators are re-inventing the outdated means to those customer desired outcomes. Innovators who focus on the customer’s desired outcome are Customer Centric. They can think backward from the outcome the product provides to the means of its achievement. They understand it’s not the product which has value it’s the desired outcome a product provides which customers value. Those who focus on the product are, A Product-Centric mindset which starts at the product putting the product ahead of the customer. Product-Centric organizations will insist that the product itself has the value and will ignore the realities of their customers.

Our friends in the Taxi Industry continue to be Product-Centric. They refuse to focus on the customers desired outcome so, as Uber celebrates its 10th Birthday. The taxi industry has done nothing to re-invent themselves watching their value continue to decline. The arguments we hear from the taxi industry are all about why the new way sucks. The taxi industry will continue fading into oblivion if they keep focusing on the product instead of the means to the desired outcome the product provides.

Can your deliverable be disrupted? Of course, it will be.

One of the hardest things for any value-added sales and service organization. Is reacting in time when their customers become out of alignment with them regarding their value. They waste time arguing why continuing to deliver the past is better than anything the future could deliver to the present.

A company becomes obsolete when it focuses on delivering the past to the future instead of delivering the future to the present.

The industry I am close to referred to as The Document Imaging Industry is itself in threat of an unknown disruptor welcoming its customers. Many in its ranks focus on the products, not the products desired outcomes, or the means to reach those desired outcomes. This Product-Centric thinking is causing many distractions to real threats. Many in the imaging Channel misunderstand that their product is also how they deliver and service as much as what they deliver.

Those whose delivery mechanism gets disrupted only built a defense against competitors they knew while refusing to imagine new competitors; competitors who don’t follow the battlefield rules of the old way and until now have never been in the old ways landscape. So, when they do come they surprise everyone who was unimaginative and unprepared.

Without the ability to imagine what could be we are limited to what it was or currently is. The unknown competitors are merely unimagined, and it’s better to introduce yourself to them in your imagination before they present themselves to your customers.

When a business limits their beliefs to what ’s possible, they face what the innovator saw as probable.

How Scannx Changed My Fear Of The Library Coin Box

I'd like to thank Monte (p4photel member for sending me this blog the other day.  After 15 years of writing blogs for the industry, it can get interesting to try to write about something new.  Monte delivers with this nice blog about copiers and coin boxes

How Scannx Changed My Fear Of The Library Coin Box

I don’t know about you but in my 20+ years of experience in our industry whenever a client came to me wanting a solution for a public library that included a coin box or some other pay model I ran for the hills. I’ve installed a few of these in my career but they were few and far between and I never really made a decent commission for the time I spent. A while ago I learned of a new solution that is inexpensive and makes much more sense for these installations. The company is called Scannx. I had the opportunity to have lunch with the chairman Murray Dennis and he demonstrated his product to me. We should all have this arrow in our quiver to respond to RFPs or vending installations.

Back in the old days if you wanted a copy of a book or a document that was in a public area you need to make a copy of it. Today why not scan it? It’s less expensive, is better for the environment and is easier to service a scanner as opposed to a printer. The Scannx solution is hardware configured with software. Plug-and-play. The hardware is a scanner attached to a workstation that is preconfigured with the Scannx software. The scanner is designed for book and page copying and the user interface for the software is simple and easy to use. By simple I mean a 3 grader could easily understand how to scan! You can scan to your email, cloud repository like Google drive, USB and many more options. There are editing tools, image enhancement and the ability to convert the document to a PDF, Word or even MP3 format. There’s even an option to convert the word file format from English to one of many different languages. Of course, there’s a small fee for the library patron to use this service and monies are collected in one of many different ways including coin and electronic methods.

While I don’t spend much time in libraries today and have done little business with them, I now have the perfect solution and an incredible differentiator when I’m responding to an RFP. Does a library really need to offer its customers the ability to copy in 2019? Why not scan it? If I really want to print it, I can use the MFP in my office or my printer at home.

Attention Sales Leaders: What Could Your Team Do With $7.2 Million Of Sales Opportunties?

"Opportunity is missed by people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work"
Thomas Edison

Observe those successful in sales, and you'll soon notice they're good at the art of conversation. If you think this sounds easy, think twice. Having engaging sales conversations takes a tremendous amount of skill, practice and patience.

With so many leaning heavily on social media for their interactions, the less face to face communication is practiced, the less skilled your team becomes in having business conversations. If your business relies on your sales team to win clients, the better their conversations become, the higher their business acumen becomes, the more opportunities they're likely to uncover and the more likely they'll be able to convert sales opportunities into profitable clients.

“It’s not about having the right opportunities. It’s about handling the opportunities right.”
Mark Hunter, author, speaker and lead expert at The Sales Hunter

Before your team puts their sales shoes on, you might take a step back and look at your sales process. Does your sales team know what distinguishes a sales opportunity? How well are they prioritizing their time and channeling their sales efforts where they get the most returns?

IT'S ABOUT STARTING CONVERSATION

Conversation, it serves as the foundation in the creation and maintenance of relationships. It serves as the gateway, if navigated successfully, can lead your team to the information or results they want.

On the surface, conversation is a simple exchange of thoughts and ideas, but even more important, it carries rich opportunities to build and strengthen bonds, uncover new information, and present it in a way to help create more sales opportunities.

So, why do many of your sales reps struggle to open up a simple conversation? Shift the focus from "all about what your sales reps want" and "all about your company" to all about the other person, their interests and their desires; showing them your sales reps care.

REAL CONVERSATIONS

For the most part, many in sales today fail to engage in genuine conversations with their clients and prospects. They rely upon pre-formatted questions and rehearsed answers which to me resembles watching a tennis match, moving your head right to left.

"Are sales reps truly conversing?"

Real conversations require your sales teams' full participation. It's the space where two human beings participate in a conversation. A genuine conversation is where reality unfolds.

How do your sales reps achieve this authentic experience of conversation, in order to help them increase their sales opportunities?

Authentic conversations mean your sales team must drop their sales defenses and stop acting like and reeking of commission breath. Yes, it's about having them become vulnerable, allowing the conversation to proceed in a humanistic manner. The possibilities and opportunities for engagement become endless.

REAL CONVERSATIONS YIELD REAL SALES OPPORTUNITIES

Authenticity is at the center of Selling From the Heart professionals who don’t just “talk the talk,” they also “walk the walk.” They back up their positive, empowering words with action; benefitting their clients and prospects. I encourage your sales team to stay true to themselves and do what they say they're going to do.

CONVERSION OF ONE NEW CONVERSATION PER WEEK

Authentic and real conversations are the crown sales jewel. Imagine your sales reps having these on a daily and weekly basis? How could this help in growing sales revenue and profits?

Let's use a sales team of 15 with an average deal size of $10,000. If we can attach a $10,000 potential sales opportunity to each new conversation, what could this mean to you and your sales team?

1 new genuine conversation per week per sales rep = 15 conversations/opportunities

15 conversations week over week per month = 60 conversations/opportunities

Every single month this is $600,000 worth of sales opportunities, generated by having heartfelt and caring conversations.

Over an entire year this pans out to $7,200,000 worth of sales opportunities.

I will allow you to play the conversion game but I think you get it!

  • An overachieving sales team
  • A happy and healthy sales team
  • A no bitching and moaning sales team
  • Happy leaders
  • Happy clients

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

A simple conversation, the most overlooked sales tool for connection and change. If every member of your sales team can choose to be present with the conversations they have with your clients and prospects, they'll soon increase their engagement levels leading to an increase in trust.

I will leave you with this to think about... Are your sales reps

  • Establishing a trusting relationship with their clients and prospects
  • Showing genuine appreciation for their clients and prospects
  • Building for their sales future

I understand, I get where you all are coming from. Every day, I walk in your shoes. I am fully committed to helping your sales team integrate social aspects and modern strategies into your current sales process to grow new business. I want you to get results. This is why I am passionate about doing this the right way, the genuine way, the authentic way! It's about understanding value before visibility.

service revenues grow steadily during the past seven years. Not coincidentally this growth has come at a time when CDS has been forging a reputation in the markets it serves as a premiere provider of digital technology and networked services. Similarly, WJS Enterprises, a Canon dealership, with offices in Metairie and Baton Rouge, LA, is also seeing its service revenues rising. “Our [service] revenues are growing but margins are tighter,” says Russ Jacketti, vice-president of sales. “It’s

As of this time there is no IPDS firmware module (needed for AS400 printing) for the 2035/45. Ricoh is hinting that it is in the works. It could be out sooner or later. This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The Last Week in November 2008

I guess the BIG news of the week from ten years ago was ere 50 cuts that Ricoh performed that week. However, that was right after the IKON purchase and within four months (end of Japanese) there was to be major cuts with high level legacy employees. Seems to me that one of the covenants if the Ricoh purchase was that all high level Ikon peeps would replace those at Ricoh.  AS Vince would say "that's my two cents".

At one time we were also both a Savin and Ricoh dealer. The advantages we found were having two support structures, "another line" we could submit as a "competing bid", and simply having a second line. Surprisingly, I spoke to some customer who told me "I'll never have another Ricoh in this building, I hate them! oh, Savin? sure, that's fine" and vice versa.

Savin had signed us up at their 5+ pricing so yes we did get lower pricing than Ricoh. The only way Ricoh would give us lower than 1st column was to sign up on the commitment programs. The boss didn't want to because if the quota's weren't met, then we would be charged back for the difference.

As for substantially lower pricing, I wouldn't say that much, but it was an advantage over Ricoh without signing a commitment form. Savin didn't use the Aficio League points like Ricoh did, but they did offer a credit card program that was similar to Aficio League points but the points were put on the credit card as 1 point for 1 dollar. Credit limit on the credit card was $50 that you had to pay back, but points were not paid back, but could be used to pay a balance on the credit limit.

To Ricoh "What I Want for Christmas 2018"

I always like to start these Christmas blogs with a small story about Christmas tradition in other countries.

In Ireland, people celebrate Christmas in much the same way as people in the UK and the USA, but they also have many of their own Christmas traditions and customs.

Christmas for Irish people, who are Catholics, lasts from Christmas Eve to the feast of Epiphany on January 6th, which some Irish people call 'Little Christmas'. Epiphany isn't now widely celebrated in Ireland.

There is an old tradition that in some Irish houses (although now not many), people put a tall, thick candle on the sill of the largest window after sunset on Christmas Eve. The candle is left to burn all night and represents a welcoming light for Mary and Joseph. read the rest here

This blog will mark the eleventh blog that I've posted over the years for "What I Want for Christmas" from Ricoh.  Over the years I've asked Ricoh to supply me with new products, and services that could help me sell more Ricoh stuff! That's all I want is some cool new stuff for Christmas.

Geesh, what do I want this year, hmmmm…..

1.  Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one.  I still want a Ricoh envelope printer and not the over priced EnPress from Xante.

2.  We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here.  I want a 36 inch color wide format MFP that uses color toner, and none of the wishy washy clogging gel ink technology. More and more clients are asking for color for the AEC market.

3. Thanks so much for the A4 MP C501SP that staples! However the price for the hardware and supplies is really high. I'd like  A REAL toner based A4 color MFP that staples and folds. Giving me the MP C501SP is like a one year membership to the Jelly of the Month Club.

4.  I really, really want one of these because my competition is killing it!  How about getting me that color A3 ink based MFP?

5. I'm hoping you can add single pass scanning to the Ricoh MPC 2504 & 2004 series. So many clients are now just focused on scanning!

6. Can you please add a new app to our MFP's that will allow clients to scan legacy photo's/pics/brochures and directly upload them to Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter?

7. Here's a great idea, how about built in embedded scanning software for indexing/metadata and folder search integration as standard feature in all of our copiers.

8. This would really help me in the field, I'd like to have more aggressive cost per page with all of the Ricoh printers.

9. I could really use A4 black and color MFP's that have stapling, while you're at it can you also give us faster black A4's.  Maybe 75ppm - 90ppmm please!

10. My next to last wish is that you can bring us tri-fold feature for all of our color MFP's.

11.  Dagnabit, I've asked for this for quite some time and you've never listened.  I want a wide format copier/printer/scanner with an automatic document feeder!  It only has to hold 20 pages. If you can do it for fax machine you can surely make it for the wide formats.

Boy oh boy that's a lot of stuff to look for!

Color Label Press University "Glossary of Terms" Part Ten, Course One

In the past I've called my self a hunter of wide format devices. I'm know moving on to call myself a hunter for color labels, which will lead me to placing net new label presses.

Over the last month or so, I've noticed multiple rolls of color labels in Wawa's, Quick Chek (both of these are gas station/food markets here in New Jersey).  In addition I also scoped multiple rolls of labels in McDonalds and Dunkin Doughnuts (or Dunkin as they have re-branded).  See and ye shall find color labels everywhere!

Ink is all around us, while pages are reducing in the office, ink usage for branding is on fire.  Next time you're at you're favorite gas convenience store, stop and take a look at the opportunities, you'll be floored!

Label Press University

At the top of each blog you'll see color label press icon.  Clicking that link which is at the top of each blog will then bring you the collection of blogs for Color Label Press University.  It's pretty neat, you'll see all of the blogs that we've posted for an easier read and simple way to toggle from blog to blog.

Color Label Presses can be used as seeding devices in larger Print4Pay opportunities, or help that dealer or rep get a conversation going with an account where they have never had any traction with MFP's or IT services.  In addition, the competition is ripe for takeover.   Let us not forget about the GP!

The market for full color digital labels in huge and the potential to make some serious commissions is enormous.  BTW, isn't that why we're in this crazy business?

This Week in the Copier in Industry, Third Week of November 2003

My sales month ended today, thus allowing time for our beloved bean counters the chance to close the month on the calendar end of month.   don't mind and I'm kind of use to it. I figure that closing the month early gives me two end of the month chances to close some orders.  Of course one is our actual close and the other is calendar end of month.  December this year is a little frightening since Christmas falls on a Tuesday.  Which means most will not be working on the 24th.  Thus December only gives me 19 selling days compared to the average month that has 22 selling days. It's GO time!

I have had GREAT success with envelopes on the C2408SP (1224SP) - I didn't do a merge, but I printed many envelopes through word using the bypass. No wrinkles. I run them through bottom first with the flap open.

I don't have my demo machine anymore, sold it, we were printing 5.5" x 8.5" heavy stock and had the bypass set for this ... I am not sure now if I had to change the paper size at the copy machine for the bypass, I do know that I sent the job from MS WORD, both from Tools/Envelopes and Labels and by creating an envelope size document (so I could add color graphics to my envelope) and they printed out without a problem.

This Week in the Copier Industry 10 Years Ago, The Third Week in November 2008

Busy, busy week last week, at least for Monday and Tuesday.  Wednesday turned out to be a dud with just a couple of small orders.  We all know the story for Thursday & Friday.  I took a well deserved break from the site for four days.

End of the year, the month, the year and the quarter coming up. I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR!

Enjoy the most popular threads from ten years ago this week.

acquisitions to date - or the next big bubble. The deal is expected to allow Ricoh to surpass Xerox as the top selling office equipment manufacturer worldwide, as the company "upgrades" the estimated 720,000 non-Ricoh products that IKON has in the field. The acquisition also provides Ricoh with access to IKON's impressive Fortune 500 and public sector client list, adds 400 sales and service locations, and significantly bolsters the manufacturer's print services resume. relegated to sell primarily to smaller businesses, why tease them with production-level devices? In addition, what is the forward-looking strategy for retaining dealers that have been and will continue to be courted by competitors, such as Canon and Konica Minolta? Despite the economy, the current environment seemingly provides a great opportunity for dual-line dealers to negotiate and push the limits of their profitability.

Re: Some of my observations....

I've stated this a few years ago and still stick by it. I think Ricoh will keep all high performing dealers as Ricoh dealers. Thus any under performing dealers will be asked to take on Lanier or Savin. End result IKON, RBS to dominate fortune companies with sprinkling of mega Ricoh dealers. Lanier and Savin dealers left to compete for SBM's. My two cents worth.

Are they Savin or Ricoh and do they handle duplicators?

Re: Ricoh cuts Jobs

"Dealers that don't perform!" Come on man that is a negative statement. There is still a market for the Lanier name and Lanier is advertising like crazy on television as well as other media. Ricoh is not the "Supreme" or the best. All of the revenue for Savin, Lanier, and Ricoh ALL goes into the "Ricoh" pot. Don't put down the smaller Lanier dealers please.

Re: Ricoh cuts Jobs

Meaning Ricoh dealers that do not perform, maybe asked to take on Lanier or Saving (these are just my thoughts). I m sure there are many decent sized and well performing Saving and Lanier Dealers. Heck, I work for a small dealership also.

Consistency... It's At The Core Of Every Sales Professional

"Getting an audience is hard. Sustaining an audience is hard. It demands a consistency of thought, of purpose, and of action over a long period of time."
Bruce Springsteen

When it comes to sales performance, consistency separates the good from the great. How often have you observed a sales rep having a series of record quarters or a banner year, only to follow it up with spats of mediocrity and below average performance?

Consistency, especially in the sales world is an enormous word. This differentiates the successful from the unsuccessful and the professionals from the reps.

Consistency will change the course of your sales life!

  • Consistency allows you to measure results
  • Consistency yields accountability
  • Consistency builds upon your reputation

Like it or not, being consistent is crucial if you want to make any significant change within sales your life.

Unfortunately...

"Salespeople today are consistently inconsistent"

DO YOUR JOB

To be consistent is to completely dedicate yourself to a task, activity or goal. It means to fully remain engaged without distraction. I'm simply amazed and astonished how many in sales negotiate with themselves the non-negotiable aspects of their job!

To be consistent requires commitment. It requires you to commit yourself to a sustained effort of action over the long-term. Keep your word to yourself, management and your family that you will follow through with what you set out to do.

Just do your job! This is what you signed up for when you decided to work within the sales profession.

THE STRUGGLE

Most salespeople struggle with staying consistent over the long-term because so much of the focus is placed on the short term. If they don’t get immediate results from their actions, they don’t see the point with continuing with those actions over the long-haul. One can point the finger directly at management for fostering this short term behavior.

Many find it difficult to stay consistent because there are just too many distractions. Salespeople are simply not focused, committed nor disciplined enough to stick with something in the short-term for long-term results.

"Just stop the excuses and get to work!"

There are no quick results and no silver bullet moments when it comes to a commitment to consistency. Consistency, it's all about making incremental improvements over time. The results you're after will eventually come, however; they'll come over an extended period of time when you commit to consistency.

The right activity + enhancing the skill set + daily habits = sales success

AT THE CORE

In order to remain consistent, one must commit to being consistent. This at the heart, the core of every sales professional.

A sales professional realizes the greatest power lies in the present moment. They understand consistency demands they stay attentive, present and mindful without losing focus. It demands they remain disciplined to the moment without exception, no questions asked.

Many in sales struggle with consistency! When they fail to see immediate results from their actions, they give up!

A true sales professional...

  • Stays disciplined in the moment
  • They understand "right now" is the only moment that matters
  • They stay consistent in the moment as they know what they need to do

They consistently apply themselves over an extended period of time in order to reap long-term sales rewards. I know this may sound simple on the surface but we live in a sales society built upon instant gratification No wonder only a small amount of sales professionals achieve any worthwhile long-term success?

"Success, it's not a light switch you turn off and on"

PLAN

Consistency over time requires planning. A sales professional thinks ahead as they plan, prepare and practice consistent behaviors. They understand their core activities are built around their values, a purpose, a plan and goals. If for any reason their priorities are not in alignment with these areas, they understand it will be difficult to maintain consistency over the long-haul.

What specifically can you do to maintain consistency?

How will you remain consistent when you get distracted from your core activities?

A sales professional builds small consistent daily routines to help them form new habits as they know this assists them in supporting their goals.

ACTION

Consistency along with focus comes in the form of proper preparation, planning and practice. A professional prepares each day with consistent action. They mentally prepare themselves with daily doses of self-reflection.

They ask of themselves:

  • What action do I need to do to achieve my goal?
  • What actions and activities do I need to repeat to achieve my goal?

They are laser focused and have a clear idea of what needs to happen in order to achieve their desired outcome.

They understand what repetitive activities they must do and simply take action.

FOCUS

Steady focus is at the core of a sales professional.

They understand and...

  • Focus on what’s most important now
  • Focus on one thing at a time
  • Focus on the extreme execution of the activity, prospecting

A sales professional focuses in on the one most important thing they need to do at this moment in time to help them in the long-run to accomplish their goals. Extreme focus is not easy. It requires discipline and accountability over the long-term.

A sales professional constantly asks themselves...

How must I think to stay focused?

They push through the discomfort, they don't give up and stay the course until they have achieved their goals.

IT'S ALL ABOUT CONSISTENCY

Your sales life is too precious to waste away. Your future rests solely in your hands. You and you alone decide what you'll focus on. You and you alone choose to be distracted. You and you alone can only decide to take action. This all begins with small steps and a positive mindset. You must commit yourself to consistency each and every single day without fail for weeks, months and years.

You may not see immediate results but over time and with consistent action you will build the foundations of a meaningful sales life.
