Need your help!!

I have a customer that has a direct mail company set up out of state. Here's what I know they are running 250K per month through a Pitney Bowes System. I beleive it is called a "Documatch", although I could be wrong. The system also has two installed WP50 printers, I have found out that these are the HP9050N's. The system will print mailers and then batch according to zip codes to get the lowest cost mail rate. What I need to know is about the print stream from the documatch, is it coming in

producer for us. Same can happen here with Paradigm, there are very fee players in the wide format low volume scan, copy and print, as a matter of fact I can name only three, Paradigm, HP (over priced) and Canon (over priced and support is so, so, they are too involved with copiers) What I'm tryin to tell everyone is that this is a win WIN, you get leads, no competetion, you sell the system and then you retain them as a customer and then sell them your MFP products down the road.

Re: Need your help!!

Do they have some sort of embedded forms on the printers HDDs? If so, can those same forms be installed on other manufacturers printers. If the print workflow is printer-centric (vs all controlled via server/software) then, you would need to research if the same printer controls will be available to Ricohs. If it is all server-based data and forms merger, then the output files should be fairly easy to test. If you are not "reinventing the wheel" for them, then plugging a device should be easy

Re: Need your help!!

·
Seems an easy way to test this would be to have the customer capture the print file and send it to you. This has the added benefit of telling you if the output is PS or PCL. Then you send it to the Ricoh and see what comes out. If it looks perfect, then it's not printer centric, if it doesn't look good (or more likely, doesn't print), there's something needed on the printer.

Why not have one message board with seperate discussion areas? So you have the News, not-related-to-anything, anything that isn't proprietary open to all members, then a Canon section only accessable to Canon members, a section only open to Ricoh members, etc. That way you can post the generic stuff in just one shot.

correction, it is not a DocuMatch being used, basically a pitney bowes server with software is generating the print stream

Re: Need your help!!

Geez, I do not believe they have embedded forms on the hard driver, however I will ask. I did just get off the phone with Pitney Bowes support and told them that I had the Pitney Bowes Mail Server and my printer failed, and asked if I could install any printer that had emulated HP. They said that would work, problem with hooking up another printer is that the account is about 1,300 miles away. I will do some more research to dot the i's and cross the t's and I will ask for the exact model

This Week in the Copier Industry 5 Years Ago (First Week of August 2014)

What an amazing week!

We closed our month 7 business days ago and all of those orders that didn't close for July have closed this week.  Seems I'm HOT!

Similar to a baseball hitter that's in a hot streak, in sales it seems that almost everything you touch pans out. One of the things I've learned is that when you're hot you don't slow down. You don't take the attitude of "well I just had a great week and I'll relax next week, because I'm so far out in front".  Wrong Batman, since you're HOT now is the time to continue the streak, continue prospecting and to set those appointments.  Every time that baseball player gets an AB it's an opportunity to get another hit.  When sales people get hot they need to continue the same efforts that got them HOT!  #neverstopprospecting

When Was the Last Time You Named your Printer or Copier?

minfaxreal

Note: I wrote this back on 2013 on the old blog site MFP Solutions, thought it would be a good recycle.

When Was the Last Time You Named your Printer or Copier?

"Can anyone come up with a fun and creative name for a Canon copier/printer? It's my job to name it since the office just got a new one the other day and I'm the new work study employee. All the other ones were named by previous work studies and were good like a leased Canon was Lisa Canon...since they leased a Canon. Thanks!"

Whoa, this was a thread I picked up the other day in my google alerts for a yahoo forum.  After 32 years in the industry, WTF,  I now find out that office workers actually give a name to the copier?

I have to admit that the old name for the Canon for Lisa Canon was pretty creative! Of course everyone could use the Lisa for Ricoh, Xerox, KonicaMinolta and the rest. So, I thought I would try my hand at thinking up some names for copiers.

Here we go (I took these names that were popular in the Victorian Era):

Hope Xerox  (hoping it works all the time)
Lottie Ricoh  (we make a lot of copies)
Lulu Kyocera  (our copier is a loser)
Benedict Arnold Toshiba  (the copier never works right)
Nimrod Sharp  (odd name for an odd copier)
Owen Savin  (we owe a lot of money on this copier)
Pleasant Muratec  (we like our copier)
Zebulon Xerox  (it's our prized copier)
Newton Ricoh  (we just got it)
August Kyocera  (the month the new copier was purchased)
Merlin Toshiba  (our system is amazing)
Avis KonicaMinolta (we're only leasing this system for a short time)
Beaton Sharp (we beat on this system all the time)
Charity Savin (a hand me down)
Eustace Muratec (our system is useless)
Faithful Xerox (always works well)
Hercules Ricoh (our system is a workhorse)
Marmaduke Kyocera (our system is huge)
Patience Toshiba (it'll work just give it time)
Postumus KonicaMinolta (our last copier died unexpectadly)
Temperance Sharp (sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't)
Thurstan Savin (our system is always going through toner so fast)
Wy Muratec (why did we ever get this system)

I'm done, my favorites would be Hope, Benedict Arnold, Dick, Owen, Avis, Charity and Marmaduke.  But maybe we can name copiers and printers after rock stars right, these copiers and printers keep the wheels turning at the office everyday and with out them the paper process does start.  Think about Bruce, Billy, Mick, Ringo, Frank (I'm aging myself), and another thought might be to name them after songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Stairway to Heaven, Under My Thumb, Wild Horses.

So, the next time I sell a copier, I will ask the new owner what name they would like to use for their new copier or printer, and I'm sure I'll get one of those strange New Jersey looks and be escorted to the door. Hey!  If you've got any really cool names drop them here in the response section!!

Digging Deeper into Perfect Copier Web Quoting Tool

I'm a fan of Perfect Copier web quoting tool, because web based quoting tool saves me an incredible amount of time.

Over the last two months I've done about twenty proposals.  Out of the twenty, eight of those have closed, six are stalled, five are still open and I lost one.

I want to dig a little deeper and explain how I use Perfect Copier.  If you're familiar with quoting tool you'l know there's a feature to email the proposal to the client or print the proposal.  To date I've never printed a proposal, not because I don't like it but rather the way I deliver the proposal.

Okay, I'm pretty good at seeing the forest through the trees. What I saw was an extremely unique deliverable to the client that no one is using.  After finishing my first quote I went out to my Verizon store and purchased a new iPad with the cellular card. It was cheap. something like $40 a month for 2 years.

The Plan

I develop my proposals either at the office or at my office.  Matter of fact, I've developed proposals as late as 2AM in the morning.  Thus, I set the appointment with the client, I double check my web based quote and it's off the client I go.  In front of the client, I draw out the IPad, log in to Perfect Copier and then show the quote on the iPad and review with the client.  Right, one other item, I have all my my documents ready to write the order. It's impressive to say the least and that I'm the only one who is different from everyone else. There's a lot to being different, different gets you remembered.

Thus, if no buying decision can be made at that time, I will email the proposal in front of the client and make sure they have received it.

I'm not a fan of emailing proposals, however we all know that every now and then you have to do for several reasons.  First being that the client maybe to far away, secondly it's a one off small A4 device, there's no money in the deal and I still need to send them something.

Client Experience

I'm an avid reader of marketing and branding content. One of the topics that I keep reading about is the client experience with a brand. Did they enjoy doing business with you, did they find the process simple and easy, will they tell their family and friends?  Was the process painless for them? I hate to say this but our industry is still taking orders like it's 1986! Let's give our clients an experience that we're a really cool technology company that has a really awesome deliverable.

Back Office Integration

Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men.  Too often a great program does not make things easy for the sales team. I had a client tell me last week that he spent a ton of money on SalesForce and it's been his biggest nightmare because of integration and costs. What was suppose to be simple was not. After his contract expires he is dumping SalesForce!

I work with two systems.  I hate to mention names, but I'll say this I work with the Tibetan brand and Perfect Copier.  I use Perfect Copier for all of my proposals and the Tibetan software for the order docs.  When I get the order, I'll then finish up the order with the Tibetan software.  It's as easy as that.

Closing

I'm not software pro, nor am I a youngster that grew up with computers, tablets or smart phones.  I believe in the product, I'm a user and I keep seeing improvements that can only help me be more productive.

Are You Practicing With Purpose Or Creating Excuses?

"Most people don't have that willingness to break bad habits. They have a lot of excuses and they talk like victims."

Practice! Who Needs To Practice... Salespeople Need To Practice

Can You Imagine A Professional Athlete Operating With A Sales Reps Mindset?

Once asked why he was so successful on the basketball court, Kobe Bryant looked right at a reporter and said: “Have you seen Los Angeles at 4am? I see it often because that’s when I start training.”

No alt text provided for this image

It can sometimes be difficult to find differences in top athletes which are noticeable. Their level of physical imbalance is minuscule. What separates the good from the great? What separated Kobe Bryant from good athletes?

Top athletes are finely tuned machines. They spend their lives perfecting their craft as they look to gain every conceivable physical and mental advantage over their opponents.

Let's look at Tiger Woods’ daily routine. He starts the day with an hour of cardio exercise and an hour-and-a-half of weight training. He follows this up by at least four hours of golf then another half an hour of weight training.

Since the age of three, he has always practiced his golf game. As Tiger transformed the game of golf, becoming the one of the greatest golfers of all time, he still practices hard to improve his game.

What separates an average athlete from an average sales rep? Millions of dollars and their mindset.

Success is simply a consequence of practice and repetition. There's no shortcuts. It's based on pushing yourself to do better and better.

Sales reps consistently talk about their work ethic as most enjoy puffing the chest BUT are they really committed to it? How many walk the walk and talk the talk when it comes to putting in the hard work and long hours that it takes to become a sales professional?

Top athletes understand the process of developing their talents will have obstacles along the way. They embrace the challenge. They embrace the suck in order to get better every single day. They understand failure is just another challenge, a roadblock to overcome.

No alt text provided for this image

Top athletes encourage feedback from their coaches, using it to focus on areas of improvement. Less successful athletes tend to dismiss, ignoring feedback and focus on the person providing it, rather than using it as an opportunity to reflect and grow. This sounds an awful lot like most sales reps, doesn't it?

My challenge to all those in sales and management... come up with a meaningful and purposeful plan of not only when you're going to practice, but HOW. And then, just do it.

The roadmap to success for an elite athlete is based upon hard work, personal ownership and practice. They hold themselves accountable to the process and they just do it!

Why do sales reps have difficulties doing what elite athletes are paid to do? What makes a sales professional AND how they go about doing their job any different than an elite athlete?

My answer to all of you is quite simple - MINDSET, PRACTICE AND NO EXCUSES

TO ALL THOSE IN SALES MANAGEMENT... STOP USING SPORTS AND SALES ANALOGIES!

Are you willing, able and committed to provide an environment around practicing, planning and preparation? This is what professional athletes are held accountable to do every single day!

Are you holding your team accountable to practice?

NO EXCUSE MENTALITY

Athletes with an excuse mentality fear negative outcomes and make excuses to avoid responsibility. Sounds a lot like many in sales and management, doesn't it?

According to Patrick Cohn, PhD, sports psychologist and founder of Peak Performance Sports, "an excuse mentality results from allowing circumstances to dictate your actions instead of taking control of them."

Sales professionals hold themselves personally accountable. They hold themselves to a higher degree of standards than sales reps. They have a no excuse mentality and they don't point fingers when they fail to hit their sales plan. They hold themselves accountable even if their manager doesn't.

Why do so many in sales management accept excuses?

Salespeople of today love swimming in the sea of excuses. Many of you use excuses to rationalize your actions regarding the circumstances you've created for yourself - why you didn't hit your sales plan, why you lost one of your best clients and why you don't have time to prospect.

One excuse follows another excuse which follows another excuse. You want to know what the real issue is here... lack of commitment!

No alt text provided for this image

When you only put half of yourself into something and then proceed to make excuses, you disrespect yourself and your manager.

Half-ass efforts gets you half-ass results
  • How committed are you to the sales profession?
  • How committed are you to practice?
  • How committed are you to yourself?

WHY DO SALES REPS INSIST ON GETTING PAID TOP DOLLAR BUT LACK A TOP ATHLETE MINDSET?

The biggest problem with salespeople today is they’re consistently inconsistent.

True sales professionals, the elite of the elite do things just a little differently than the average sales rep. They practice with purpose, passion and pride.

Sales professionals practice with purpose. Sales professionals operate with a no excuse mentality.

GET REAL

Sales professionals set goals and invest the mental and physical energy towards achieving their goals. They equip themselves with an arsenal of effort, patience, and persistence as they know their journey is difficult. They are realistically optimistic.

Can the same be said for sales reps?

BE THE BEST

Sales professionals know, no matter what, there's always room to improve. This may involve learning a different technique, strategy, or even hiring a coach.

Can the same be said for sales reps?

CONSISTENCY

The success of sales professionals is built upon small sustainable changes. When those become second nature, they add in new challenges. Whatever their goal is they track their progress and are consistently consistent with practice.

Can the same be said for sales reps?

WAKE UP SALESPEOPLE

Imagine for a moment, how long would any professional sports athlete last on their team with the attitude and mindset of most sales reps? Not long at all, as they would be released from their team immediately.

Some can say athletes are over-paid prima donna's, however; the one thing they possess that most sales reps don't - a growth mindset.

I encourage the self-centered and the "all about me" sales reps out there to kick your complacent mindset right in the ass. Do you think a complacent mindset lands an elite athlete a new contract?

Sports athletes don’t come out of rookie training camp saying, “I’m shooting for average – average skills, average income and average performance.

When you started out as a sales rep you didn't set out with the goal of hanging on, doing enough to just “get by”, or riding it by figuring out how to survive until you can inherit another sales reps accounts. Well, at least not in the beginning, correct?

You learned that mindset. You learned that behavior. You learned to settle. You failed to practice. You started to make excuses.

I'm positive the mind can be convinced of almost anything if you tell it the same story over and over again. So here lies the question to all of you in sales...

Are you really happy with average results or have you just convinced yourself that’s the case?

This Week in the Copier Industry 15 Years Ago (Last Week of July 2004)

Egads, it's Friday night almost 10PM and I'm still working.  My day started off at 5AM.  I arrived at the office about 6:30AM. Had to quotes to prepare before I had two appointments that were an hour away.  Closed two of the appointments and then traveled back to office to prepare some material for another appointment around 2PM.  Second appointment went okay and sparked some interest in the new PRO5160.  Did a few cold calls, nothing to speak of. On my way home, I received an email from a net new stating they wanted to move forward with an order.  Not bad three days into the new month and 3 orders. Gotta keep going!

Enjoy these threads from 15 years ago this week!

Xerox has responded to the challenge of competitors such as Canon (NYSE: CAJ - News), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ - News), and Ricoh, which are making the shift to color products. With color products making up about 25% of Xerox's revenues, it is plain to see that the product line has become the key driver in the company's growth strategy. The company is also leading the transition from offset printers to digital technology through the recent introduction of seven digital

I have shown the benefits of scan to archive and scan to share, with basic windows folders and Virtual Copier as options. Canon is showing Ecopy and Xerox Paper Port. This is awsome and exactly the kind of information this site needs to make accessible. As a sidenote, the saddle finisher on the 2232/2238 is the same one Canon uses for their 2200/2800/3300 series. I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

it is my understanding that the finisher used by both RFG and Canon is manufactured by a third party source. Also, if what I was told is correct the RFG finisher offers hole punch while the Canon does not.

Thus we have seven months in the books and so far 2019 has been awesome.  August brings us those "dog days" of summer and many objections due to vacations, not enough time, get back to me after Labor Day or you can't get anyone to respond. I get it, and I've adjusted my habits over the years. August needs to be one of the biggest prospecting months in the year. The time you spend prospecting in August will pay HUGE dividends moving into the last quarter.  Yes, we are measured by our month to month sales, but we're also measured on our quarters and year end.  Ours is not a thoroughbred horse race each month. It's not about who gets there the fasted. It's more about the strategic month, the strategic quarter and the ability have a plan in place to get you where you want to be.

On the other side, do any of you strictly use shorter lease terms in order to flip your base customers quicker? Cheers!
