The Week in Copiers Ten Years Ago

The Week in Copiers Ten Years Ago

First Week of April 2006

This Thursday will mark the beginning of April which is also known as April Fools Day.

"Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1."

However for our beloved copier industry April Fools Days can bring about many changes. April 1st is also the start of the new fiscal year for most of our Japanese manufacturers. Some of those changes are good and some really stink, I'm afraid that we'll see massive reductions in the work force from many of our manufacturers and that's because of a full year of COVID related losses.  I hope not but I think the writing is on the wall.

Enjoy these awesome threads from ten years ago this week!

Sales Professionals Are Not Settlers, Are You?

"If you'll not settle for anything less than your best, you will be amazed at what you can accomplish in your lives."
Vince Lombardi

Settling, complacency, contentment, relaxed, peaceful; it's out there right now hiding within the closet of many in sales.

Lurking in the dark shadows of success and camouflaged where one least expects to find it, a great balancing act of excuses.

It's the silent business killer, ambushing and striking salespeople without warning. It can bring even the biggest and brightest to their knees. What's this hidden terror, settling!

A sales reps' biggest competitor is the status quo

It can happen to you. It strikes with extreme precision. Settling, it happens so please don't fool yourself.

Settling is a ruthless sales disease. It doesn't care about how long you've been in sales or what day of the week it is. It cares only of the cold and timid.

Truth be told, while many sales reps seem content on getting by and blending in with all the other empty suits, a true sales professional is not. They have meticulously rewritten the sales playbook.

"Complacency is the enemy of study. We cannot really learn anything until we rid ourselves of complacency."
Mao Zedong

THE COMFY COUCH

Unguarded, the 'settling' disease has been lurking within personal closets for quite some time. This didn't happen overnight, this happened because of a whole bunch of small personal decisions over time.

Allow me to introduce you to the law of complacency. It states, says when you surround yourself with empty suits, harbor average thoughts, settle for average results, and point fingers everywhere, this all leads to an empty sales life of being ordinary and living a mediocre existence.

Why is this happening?

LACK OF GOALS

Your budget number, sure it's a goal, however; what about your personal goals?

What's your vision and values? Are you operating with a wish or hope list rather than a must have list? Where's the burning desire? Where's the drive? Where's the fortitude? Where's the plan?

What has led you down the path you're taking right now?

You can have growth or you can have comfort, but you can't have both

INCONSISTENT SALES MANAGEMENT

From personal experiences, most sales manager's focus on the under-performers; spending less and less time focusing on the top performers. I’ve been in bullpens and heard mutterings of “I don’t care what they’re doing as long as they’re hitting their numbers”.

Coach, coach and coach! This is why sports dynasties exist.

Inconsistency leads to consistent trips to the empty suit cleaners.

Often times this radiates with those in sales who have been with the same company for decades or within the same industry for eons, doing the same thing; particularly if their sales role hasn’t progressed.

You all know what I am talking about. I'm referring to all those sales reps who have been seeing the same clients for years. Day after day, month after month talking about the same products, same services to the same people, monotony of their activity shows up in their attitude towards pushing themselves to the next level; leading to apathy, complacency and taking their clients for granted.

"Salespeople have hypnotized themselves into believing what they aren't doing doesn't work"

Unless these sales reps find a way to invigorate more energy and interest back into their role, most will just mutter along in mediocrity until something shakes them out of the state they are in. Unfortunately, this translates into losing a client or the threat of losing their job.

Are you willing to surround yourself with unreasonable sales professionals who share unreasonable expectations, who hold themselves accountable for lofty and unreasonable outcomes?

You are the sum total of the 5 closest people you associate with, are they empty suits?

STOKE THE FIRE WITHIN YOU

Where's the drive? Stoke the fire of passion and pride that drives you to do the hard work to be a true One-Percenter. Ignite the fire from within!

In order to be extraordinary and rise above the sea of empty suits, you must abandon your excuses, limiting self-beliefs, and damaging thoughts. I encourage you to replace them with a set of higher self-expectations.

“Belief is an emotion which creates certainty."
Tony Robbins

Sales professionals...

  • Have unreasonable sales dreams
  • Have unreasonable sales goals
  • Take unreasonable sales leaps
  • Have unreasonable sales thoughts
  • Take unreasonable action
  • Are not sales conformists

SALES PROFESSIONALS DON'T SETTLE, THEY CREATE CHANGE

A true sales professional has acute awareness and a total understanding that acceptance of change is critical, especially in times of uncertainty and doubt within the sales world. This applies directly to the settler's mentality.

We have only three responses to change - resist it, accept it or create it.

A change resistor likes things just the way they are. A change acceptor will wait to see what is happening. While change creators have become today's problem solvers.

Sales professionals are change creators. They take charge of your journey. They take the journey of self-discovery.

Right now, at this very moment in time... Who are you? Why are you doing what you're doing?

"When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves."
Viktor E. Frankl

DON'T SETTLE, DO THE WORK!

John C. Maxwell said:

“People are like rubber bands, they are most effective when they are stretched.”

Are you stretching? Have you settled somewhere in your sales life?

  • What doors could you open by stretching towards your vision?
  • What new sales opportunities could you experience?
  • How would this make you feel?

A sales professional creates change and pulls organizations forward.

A sales professional takes massive action!

A sales professional identifies new processes, looks for new opportunities, brings new and different insights into businesses with the goal of helping to solve real business problems and challenges.

A sales professional adopts the mentality focused on helping for all the right reasons versus closing the "big deal" for their personal benefit.

"We won't figure out what's sacred in life if we settle for what's safe."
Bob Goff

COVID19 Remote Working Day Two Hundred and Fifty-Nine of Selling

COVID19 Remote Working Day Two Hundred and Fifty-Nine of Selling Copiers

Managed IT, Content and BDR also

Today was the first day for the rest of my year.  After pumping in a cool quarter of a million for the Q1 the well has run dry.

My plan for the next 30 day is simple, it's a minimum of 20 prospecting calls and 20 prospecting email each day of the week.  However today the goal was to send forty prospecting emails and 40 prospecting emails because I have three appointments tomorrow and then traveling to White Marsh in the afternoon for training Friday morning.

Prospecting Emails & Calls

With the prospecting emails I decided that each email had to be wordsmithed to the previous contact history with each prospect and client.  As I got further and further into the contacts I realized this is going to take more time than I thought.  With my emails I always want to only ask one question and I always want the question to be the last line of the email. My experience over the years tells me this is the best way to get some type of response.

The good news is that I was able to finish the day with 42 prospecting emails.  I was also happy with a 35% reply rate from existing and net new prospects for today.  In addition two of those emails turned in two phone calls back to me.

I'll be the first to admit that on many occasions when I work my CRM is that I'll pick and chose who I'm going to email or call when there is a long list.  Today was different since I ran down the list of clients one by one.  No stone was to be left unturned today or for the rest of the month.  Everyone gets touched!

The bad news is that I was only able to manage 24 prospecting calls.  The call back rate for the phone calls was low at 15%.

But there is more good news to tell.  I was able to book four appointments and created a solid opportunity with an existing client for $40K.  I'm hoping to make the other 16 calls sometime tomorrow and have already decided that if I'll make them at 9 or 10PM tomorrow night from the hotel room.  Yup, I understand no one will pick up the phone, however just maybe the thought of a voice message coming in that late will mean something to that "C" level exec.

Right now it's all about contacting as many net new and existing clients as possible for the next 30 days.  Even with having a lead service I'm taking the approach that I won't have any leads come my way for the next 30 days.  It then becomes more about how to make things happen and not waiting for things to happen.

An Email Response From Yesterday

One of my existing clients called me a few weeks ago and stated they finally wanted to replace their oldest copier.  That copier was 11 years old and was finally giving up the ghost.  The average volume pre-COVID was almost 40K per year.  During COVID the volume dropped to 25K per year.  Since we could not meet because of COVID everything was via email.  I received the email yesterday that the client was just "going to purchase a small MFP for a few hundred dollars". WFT, people just don't understand that most of these couple hundred dollar MFP's have a cost of 5 cents per page.  Of course I did the the math for pre-COVID and post-COVID volumes (we need to start speaking about these now). In addition a short and simple spreadsheet was sent showing that even with a lease for the small A4 black device the client will still save $75 per month.  Alas it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.  Not sure why some clients just don't listen. I guess the thought of just spending $300 upfront was to enticing.  At this point I hope they spend a couple of hundred a month on those  toner cartridges.

Day 2 of Q2 starts in the AM and the prospecting needs to continue...

COVID19 Remote Working Day Two Hundred and Fifty-Eight of Selling

COVID19 Remote Working Day Two Hundred and Fifty-Eight of Selling Copiers

My apologies again for not posting more of these blogs.  My last week has been focused on trying to move opportunities since the last day of our sales month for March is today.  I was afraid I was going to put up a goose egg this month and that's something I haven't done in years.

One Opportunity

That one opportunity that I had for last week emailed me late last week and stated they wanted to wait a couple of months because of tax season. I agree what accountant would want a copier delivered the busiest time of the year. It was time to get the thinking cap on and deliver them an option that would allow them to order now.  Will all of the uncertainty around inventory and how long it's taking to get equipment. I laid it all out in an email format for the client and stated we're not sure when this is going to end. Told them that they could wait the two months however they would then move to the back of the line.  It was my recommendation to do it now because it will be weeks to get the equipment.  In addition I threw in a couple of links about all of the issues our industry is facing with shipments from the east.  I also threw the client a bone and offered up the first year of maintenance and supplies at no cost.  In the end we were able to secure the order and turn the objection of waiting two month to ordering now.

The Last Week

The last week has been extremely painful because I was not able to deliver the revenue that I forecasted this month. In fact I was not even close to my number.  Thus while delivering $240K for January & February, March came at a paltry $10K in revenue.  I guess the most painful parts was that I was not able to contribute to the team with a decent number and that most of my funnel feel apart this month.   It's not that I lost opportunities it's that I didn't do a great job with asking one of the most basic questions which is "what is your buying time criteria?".  If I would have done more of that I would have had a better handle on my forecast.

Now I find my self with the task of rebuilding the funnel. In order for me to hit my revenue goal for each month I need to have three times my monthly revenue with opportunities that can close that month.  Yup, I have a tall task ahead in the coming weeks.

New Jersey

I believe I made mention in my last blog that our Governor extended the Health Emergency Order for another thirty days last week.  In an interview this week our Governor stated something to the effect that NJ will not be moving forward with any additional openings for some time.  This is due to an increase of almost 15% of COVID cases in the last two weeks. Thus while more that 1.3 million have been inoculated, many are now immune because they had COVID19 our Governor is still keeping his thumb on the necks of businesses that want to get back to business.

Many of those businesses that I've spoken to are still unsure when they'll be back in the office. Some have stated July, then August while others have stated they would institute a hybrid work place until all of this has passed.

Q2

Q1 is over and thoughts are now set for Q2.  We all know you're only as good as your last month or quarter.  For the month of April I've laid out some personal goals.

  • develop 5 opportunities each week
  • 100 calls and 100 emails each week (prospecting)
  • eight to ten appointments each week

I feel as these are goals that I can reach and in 30 days I should be able to get my pipeline back where it needs to be.  Tomorrow starts Q2 for us and I'm excited to see what the future holds.

Every Morning Sales Professionals Reflect And Recharge Themselves With Ikigai.

"Lose an hour in the morning, and you will spend all day looking for it."
Richard Whately

We all know that in order to maintain peak performance, achieve remarkable success, and to lead a positive sales lifestyle then we must recharge ourselves regularly.

There is a great saying:

“You charge your phone every day, why don’t you do that to yourself?”

Our mind, body and energy function just like smart phones. We need to recharge ourselves from time-to-time to prevent burnout but also to maintain healthy work performance.

How you start your morning dictates how you feel, act and decide the rest of your day.

What does your morning routine look like?

Having a morning routine is mission critical to your sales success but deciding how you spend the first hour of your day is what sets the tone.

“Let the first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day. Today will never happen again.”
OG Mandino

THE FIRST MORNING HOUR

As humans, we're wired to seek out meaning and purpose in our lives.

Today’s selling environment is turbulent, full of turmoil and just a bit of uncertainty. It's much more challenging and complex than ever before.

All this said...

Are you recharging your mind daily?

Are you self-reflecting daily?

“The soul usually knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind.”
Caroline Myss

The truth is that many in sales are so busy trying to move forward with their lives that many rarely take a moment to slow down and be at one with their thoughts.

In my opinion, self-reflection and recharging are some of the best ways that you can shift your mindset, increase positivity in your life, and discover a greater connection to yourself.

I am huge believer in morning rhythms and routines.

It's not where you finish your sales day, but how you start your sales day.

Capture the first hour of every morning with purpose, or the morning will capture you!

CONNECT TO YOUR PURPOSE EVERY MORNING

Serious sales professionals capture every morning with a sense of purpose.

  • Have you ever stopped long enough to think about your purpose in life?
  • Have you ever stopped long enough to ask yourself... why am I in sales?
“There is no greater journey than the one that you must take to discover all of the mysteries that lie within you.”
Michelle Sandlin

DISCOVER YOUR IKIGAI

According to Japanese culture, everyone has Ikigai. It's the value that one finds in their life or the things which make someone feel their life is valuable.

In Japan, millions of people have Ikigai, a reason to jump out of bed each morning.

Ikigai, it’s often translated as “a reason to wake up” or a direction of life that makes it worthwhile. Finding your Ikigai is a continual process of self-discovery.

Ikigai is seen as the convergence of four primary elements:

  • What you love (your passion)
  • What the world needs (your purpose)
  • What you are good at (your vocation)
  • What you can get paid for (your profession)

Imagine for a moment... every morning you spend the first hour in solitude with pen and paper in hand, answering the four primary elements of Ikigai.

Don’t force yourself to come up with answers all in one sitting. It's called a morning routine for a reason.

Every morning take notes as ideas and insights come to you. This is the time to be radically honest with yourself. Don’t be afraid to jot down whatever comes into your mind.

"What comes into your mind, comes out in your life"
Craig Groeschel

Discovering your own Ikigai is said to bring fulfillment, happiness, and make you live healthier and longer.

IKIGAI, LET THIS BE YOUR MORNING GUIDE

Start viewing your morning Ikigai as your morning compass. Align your actions with the “thing that lights your fire” helps you to navigate the sales ups-and-downs.

I encourage you to recharge, reflect and rely on your morning routine. Integrate Ikigai to steer you in the right direction.

Here are a few more morning routine questions to reflect upon...

  • What do I want?
  • What is the meaning of my work?
  • What is my sales purpose?

SALES PROFESSIONALS CREATE ROUTINES

Truly successful professionals are achievers, and their routines are their roadmap.

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
Aristotle

A morning routine... it is about allowing yourself to begin your day with confidence, peace, and a positive attitude.

In order to live with a sense of sales purpose, intentionally capture the morning. Connect to your core values, your personal mission, and to the quiet voice inside of you.

Try reconnecting with what matters most each morning.

“How you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have.”
Lemony Snicket

The Week in Copiers Fifteen Years Ago

The Last Week of March 2006

Fifteen years ago I was forty-nine years old. I started the Print4Pay Hotel forum back in 2000 via an MSN communities page.  Back there there was just a handful of us that chatted back and forth about copier, speeds, feeds and the industry.  When ever anyone asks me about the Print4Pay Hotel I tell them that our members are the best of the best of our industry because they have a passion for what they do and a thirst for knowledge.  That knowledge allows us to win more, sell more and keep us sharp.

In my cold calls, I found a customer that has a small Canon copier. They have developed a Unix driver for printing barcodes to this copier. He's getting ready to replace his bigger Toshiba because it won't print the barcodes. He said he might consider a Ricoh if he didn't have to re-write his driver program. We don't do Unix. Any suggestions?

Unrelated to this sort of..... If your customer sends a print job and asks for multiple sets, but only gets one. Happens because auto continue is set to Immediate and the paper size is incorrect. By default the Ricoh will only produce one set if the paper size is incorrect; even if you manually tell it what paper size to use. Auto continue stops the machine to ask what to do, but has a time out so if one job is incorrect all the jobs don't build up behind it. Therefore is it's set incorrectly

I'd recommend the Savin C2824 if the investment isn't too much. There are also the Savin new color mfp that is a collaboration with Brother ( a Savin CLP831 engine and a brother feeder) but I'm not sure about account codes, this is more for the SOHO environment and has a high cost of operation. Otherwise, they would need one of the ISO scan units and a CLP17 or CLP26DN, this will limit color copying capability with respect to finishing and duplexing.

I don't think you could have a selling sales manager who also (actually) manages 6 people. Selling sales mangers are great in areas that need someone in charge but the number of reps do not justify a manager (usually 2-3 reps). If you want someone to hire, train and actually manage people, don't give them a quota for individual sales. If you want someone to answer a few questions and turn in the month end paperwork without really "managing" anything, go with a selling sales manager.

with the original deal for $4.3 billion US dollars. Sharp USA reported that 45 million was to go to the North American market for building the business imaging division. In a document from Sharp the 45 million. Since the buy number is now 1/5th less. I would expect that number to now drop to 36 million or so.

I would be surprised if any such discretionary spending can survive unless Fox Con desides to dump a bunch of money into making this acquisition pay off. Remember that Sharp has already cut to the bone and some things probably cannot be cut any further.

Art, did the printer you printed to have PostScript? I tried it to a Savin C2525 that does not have PostScript and there is no generic PCL driver...also, there are no color drivers. Am I missing something? I thought I had missed something when I found I could connect to my server and the printers shared from there...however, it doesn't recognize the drivers. This free app doesn't compare to Presto I'm afraid. I still say you get what you pay for.
