Temporary Comfortable Bus Rides - Lead Nowhere

"The benefits of hanging out with comfort are mostly delusional."

As industries navigate today's innovative disruptions, I warn those who seek comfort over challenge. That comfort only exists in an unchallenged temporary world.

"Regardless how comfortably the seats are - a bus full of complacency will drive into oblivion."

Anytime I have an opportunity to witness complacency, I take advantage to learn from what I see. One commonality is that those insecure about their place in the future refuse to embrace any disruptions to their present; they do this even as their logic demands their attention and action towards change.

What seems worse is those repeating past disasters refusing to ask, what will be different this time? I believe it is that asking brings awareness of either incapability or insecurity to capabilities.

Someone asked me recently why so much complacency exists in upper management? My answer was, I believe it's debt. Many of today's executives are too insecure to challenge a comfortable living secured by debt.

Unfortunately, some with great intentions and abilities fool themselves that the rewards system for the status quo is greater than the rewards paid to those who challenge.

However, when you allow your potential to be stifled repeatedly, you must accept that your comfort is more important than the painful challenges in implementing your ambitions.

Some executives think of themselves as entrepreneurs, and all the while, they hold back on challenging the status quo within the companies they work for. At the same time, these executives will fantasize that they can leave their job someday and create change independently.

I suggest that if this is true, then challenge the environment your in. Stop hanging out in the pasture of least resistance grazing on complacency.

It would be a great benefit to businesses if executives challenged all they know, especially in those industries finding themselves in the disruption caused by evolutionary technology changes, which today defines many industries.

"The dreams of one day won't create an entrepreneur someday. It will be the actions of a challenge to status quo which give birth to entrepreneurism."

In today's business environment, those who have a passion for creating something better. Have an excellent opportunity to do just that from within the organizations they reside. If you genuinely believe in your cause, don't allow a position to hold you back.

The world is in great need of intrapreneurs.

All those who find themselves frustrated by corporate complacency and believe they can become entrepreneurs. I strongly recommend that first, you master being an intrapreneur. Push your talent and passion to the forefront of your ambition. Stand up and challenge that which needs a challenge.

Those who define the consequence of challenging the status quo as a loss of comfort. Are far from ready to pay the price needed to become an entrepreneur.

"The hunting grounds for the disruptor are in the fields of status quo."

As technology continues to challenge the status quo of all industries, there will be great opportunities for those intrapreneurs to challenge their subordinates and those leaders who blanket themselves in comfort.

Those who recoil into what they know during industry disruptions, doubling down on the comfort of conformity, fearing the unknown, or have insecurities of their place in the future. Create the hunting grounds for the innovating challengers.

Remember, my friends, a bus full of comfort and complacency will become the prey the disruptor seeks.

"Status quo is the killer of all that will be invented."

Konica Minolta and 140lb index

The bizhubs are rumoured to do 140lb index...through the drawer...duplex!!! The Savin color machines only do a maximum paper weight of 90lb...through the bypass...simplex only. Are the bizhubs really all that or is this a "fish story". What are the reprocutions if a customer runs this kind of weight often on the bizhubs. Any dual line distributors out there?

I got the weight information that I quoted above straight out of their spec sheet and Product and Sales Guide; it also was discussed during our sales team's launch training. It bears out with what our service team is seeing. I do not see anything in Konica's materials for this model series about t-shirts. Must say it surprises me that anyone tries to put t-shirt transfer materials through a laser printer or copier anyway, since the transfer material is fused to the t-shirt fabric with an iron

Our systems are specifically designed to bridge the gap between copier and offset systems by handling run lengths that are too long for copiers or laser printers and too short for offset presses. Some RISO models can output 35 to 40 copies economically. When the run length requirement hits about 4,000 copies, depending on what equipment the customer has available, it may be appropriate to move the job to an offset press. WTT: Today, digital

Local number might be a nice perk, but sounds like this customer is sending more than receiving. I'm glad we're able to provide a solution but wow, what kind of person calls their copier rep and says: "Ok, I wanna send a fax over a phoneline but don't have a phoneline, do you have a machine that'll do that?"

We're dual line Konica and Ricoh. That info is accurate for some of the bizhub line, but not every model. The 350-250-200 monochrome engine, for example, does not do that. But, the C351 and C450 color engines do. No repercussions if engine is rated for the weight and paper meets spec. Otherwise, we'd handle it like any other service issue where the problem is caused by client's actions.

Shaja: So you're saying that the color machines run this weight without problems? How/Why is it capable of so much more than the Ricoh machines? If you ran this weight on a Ricoh (and it didn't jam which would be highly unlikely) you'd be replacing rollers and fusing sections like they were going out of style. This isn't the case on the Konicas? Sorry if this is a little redundant, but I have to find some kind of a defense to this objection that is bound to arise.

It's Oh, I see. @remote isn't for everyone. Ricoh reccomends it being placed in accounts with 10 or more machines. While it primarily tracks network copiers, it can actually track up to 5 devices that are not connected to the network, but it connects to them through serial cables, so not great if the customer has long distances between machine. And while it does usually send in this information over the internet, it can use a phone line to "call in" the information as well.

Why is this topic in the AS/400 forum? Now that I'm certified on @remote I can answer more questions. Ricoh reccomends it be placed in accounts with 10 or more machines. The really strange thing here is that the @remote device captures the data (including customer name, Model of machine, Serial Number and all useage data), sends it to Ricoh Japan, and then allows the dealer to access it.

Not sure what you mean. Each device is setup seperately. The data is sent to Ricoh, then forward to the dealer (you). The customer doesn't see this data, it would contain details for every customer. Dealers can run reports and export data to provide to the customer.

I understand that the "program" works that way. However, I have a fortune 500 that orders a quarter million a year that really wants @Remote and I really want a list of every print device they own. But they want to be able to get the info themselves and I would like to at least have the option of considering that possibility. The benefit to us would be huge. Obviously I can't give them direct access if it gives them access to all of our other accounts as well.

Sales Professionals... Appreciation Unlocks The Door To Your Sales Growth.

“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.”
Zig Ziglar

Appreciation, it's a wonderful thing to receive, however; how often do we give it back to others and practice it ourselves?

Appreciation creates a human connection. It encourages us towards even more collaborative relationships. It's so important to give appreciation because it enhances self-esteem for both you, the giver and your clients, the receivers.

According to Jack Canfield, in The Success Principles,

“A state of appreciation is one of the highest vibrational emotional states possible.”

Imagine for a moment... What would happen if you looked each and every one of your clients in the eye and with sincerity said,

"Thank you for your business and allowing me to serve you, I sure do appreciate you."

When I say appreciation, I'm not referring to fancy dinners, sporting events, gift cards or gift baskets... I'm talking about the power of a good old genuine THANK YOU, I SURE DO APPRECIATE YOU!

Here's a little secret... are you ready? The key to your sales growth now and well into the future is by showing appreciation to your clients.

Showing appreciation... it's about investing time, energy, love and caring for your clients.

APPRECIATION IS THE KEY

We all know the costs are much higher to acquire a new customer than it is to retain an existing one. I'm all for growing new business but not at the risk of losing a possible client.

How about focusing on a client retention strategy, as an effective way to drive sales growth?

The key to client retention is showing them how much you appreciate them. To do this, you must bring sincerity, substance and heart to ensure that every interaction with your clients surpasses their expectations.

If you want your clients to continue to spend money with your company, as well as recommending you to others, it’s a good idea to show how much you appreciate your clientele.

Stop delivering ho-hum experiences and expecting your clients to continue doing business with you!

Wouldn't you agree, everyone likes to feel valued? Your clients are no different. When it comes to client appreciation, sincerity supersedes gimmicks.

Client appreciation must be driven by a genuine and sincere desire to please.

Real and I mean real appreciation is about truly caring for your clients. It's a sign of genuine gratitude for their business and the opportunity to serve them.

PLACE YOUR CLIENTS AT THE FOREFRONT

Are your clients at the HEART of everything you do?

I'm sure you work hard every day to provide great service, but now I am asking you to think about creating an outstanding and consistent experience.

Showing appreciation requires diligence and commitment in cultivating a persistent attitude of gratitude.

I'm going to challenge you to kick it up a notch. Appreciation can really go a long way when you put some thought, extra time and effort into it.

How your clients feel about you and their willingness to continue doing business with you are closely related. If they feel valued and are treated with care, aren't they more likely to become loyal?

Appreciation, this is something that takes practice, consistency and the true understanding of people. Meaningful and credible relationships do matter.

Integrating the use of fromtheheartcards is hands down how you ratchet up relationship building and appreciation. This is how you create an emotional one-to-one connection and a memorable experience. I guarantee a personalized card and tugging on one's heart strings, the card will never be thrown away.

A true human connection lives beyond surface level.

I encourage you to discover what really matters to someone and strengthen your relationship with them.

LISTENING, YOUR CLIENTS WILL APPRECIATE IT

How well are you truly listening and showing genuine interest towards your clients.

Listening, it's about creating the WOW factor.

We live in a world of attention deficit disorder. No one has the time to listen.

How many salespeople are patient enough to sit back, ask questions and then really listen?

One of the most powerful things you can do is listen. What concerns me, is how many of you listen just long enough to then immediately jump right into sales pitch beast mode the moment you uncover a pain point.

Heartfelt conversations emotionally connect with your clients. This allows for intellectual discussions that lead to exciting new discoveries and the personal sharing of information.

Listening to learn... I believe this drives trust while allowing you to discover the full scope of their goals, dreams, challenges, aspirations and business drivers.

"Listen to your customers before they listen to your competition."
Julian Hall

FINAL THOUGHTS

Showing appreciation and enhancing the client experience is about human interaction. It's creating a bond with your client's. It’s about you making the commitment to ensure you're positively impacting the lives of your clients, their business and their profitability.

What could you be doing to give your clients the experience they deserve? There’s absolutely no excuse for ignoring this fact. I encourage you to start curating client memories. If you're not providing outstanding experiences, then really, what are you doing?

The key to sales growth sits close to home, what are you going to do about it?

The Week in Copiers Ten Years Ago

The Week in Copiers Ten Years Ago

Second Week of May 2011

I don't think many clients are brand loyal anymore. One of the questions I ask net new clients when we meet is "what brand do you have now, and what was what brand did you have before your current device?" If it's the same brand I then ask is it the same support company also? If the two are the same then the client has both brand and company loyalty. If the brand was different with the before device they then have no brand loyalty and if the support company is also different then there is no brand and no company loyalty. Now if the brand changed and the support company did not they have company loyalty. Always good questions to ask so you can understand how to position your company

In looking at other brands I've spoken with Muratec which seems like a good fit. There are no independent Canon dealers in our area so there may be an opportunity there. How is Canon to deal with as an independent dealer? Thanks

How I Embarrassed Myself and Botched a Big Sales Opportunity

Jill Konrath | May 11, 2016 55 views 1 Comment When I began working in sales, I was on a mission to get up to speed as fast as possible. I read all the sales books, went to seminars and took everything I learned as the gospel truth. One of my biggest sales opportunities at the time was a fast-growingconstruction firm. I’d already gotten my foot in the door and met with Tinsey, a very articulate woman who told me she was making the copier decision for her company. Not long afterour first

Sharp may cut 3,000 jobs in Japan (1,000 in photocopier division)

The company will include the job cuts in its business reconstruction program to be announced as early as this summer. Sharp, unable to reverse its deteriorating earnings, has made it an urgent task to reduce fixed costs. It may implement the job cuts by the end of this fiscal year at the earliest. Re: Looking for suplementary brand, How is Canon for Independent Dealers?

Canon is a great product. Most of the time it sells itself based on the brand awareness. (Technically you could go into RBS accounts with Canon, right?) If you're going to sell Muratec, I think it's better go get authorized for Konica Minolta instead. Konica and Canon are premium brands that can give your dealership higher status and support. Price isn't everything -- company image plays a huge role in engaging with new customers and showcasing yourself as a "premium" technology provider is a

mnchstr I may have a unique perspective being at an Independent Canon Dealer for 25 years and spending 2+ years at RBS (Ricoh Business Systems) as The Boston Region (NE) Solutions Manager. The Canon equipment is solid, What I personally prefer we sell if we are doing 5 year leases or longer. Support is pretty good but not what it once was (They are spread kind of thin). We sell 90% Canon but Samsung is coming on strong. Not eating intio our Canon sales (They cost more) but Samsung allows us to

Interesting that there is no MP C5504 to replace the MP C5503 (there was in Japan). Guess Ricoh decided there was too much overlap with the MP C6004. Anyone have the "What's New / Different" Doc for this? - Jake

After You Ask This One Question, You Can Ask Your Prospect Anything

Questions arethe key to sales. From the first insightful question that makes a prospect think, "This person might have something to offer me," to the ones that get a prospect to realize, "We need what this company has," to when you finally hit pay dirt and prospects say, "Yes! We are ready to solve this problem once and for all," questions are what drive a sales process forward. Unfortunately, most people hesitate to ask the tough questions that challenge a prospect to think critically and

If you want to sell $500K per year, then join your local chamber of commerce, however if you really want to sell one million or more, the join those high profile charities in your geo area. Get involved, donate time and knowledge, within a year or less you'll be rubbing elbows with the most influential "C" level execs in your area. I can go into RBS accounts nowbut the direct pricing is usually lower than my cost even though my DBM says the direct and dealer cost is the same. I have independent Konica and a lot of direct Konica in my territory already . Sharp has reached out to us a couple of times over the years also but EVERYONE sells sharp around here even the Konica dealer.

COVID19 Remote Working Day Two Hundred and Ninety One Days of Selling

COVID19 Remote Working Day Two Hundred and Ninety One Days of Selling Copier, Managed IT and Content

Look at me blogging on a Friday night one more time!

What a travel day it was for me. I had a 9:30AM in Princeton (45 miles) from my home office, then a Noon appointment that was another (50 miles) from Princeton and further from my home office. It was then another 65 miles or to our Edison office where I had to print order docs for the wide format approval I received this AM.  There was no way I was going to email the docs and WAIT to get them returned.  Thus is was another 35 miles to my clients office (closer to my home office) where we spent maybe 20 minutes chatting about his business, what's new with him, looked at the space for the KIP C660 and got my two signatures.

Thus for a week that I thought was going to be another struggle I received three sets of order docs for a total of $33K. Top top it off my Noon appointment gave me a verbal to send them order docs for a new A3 color worth about $11K.  Not a bad way to end a week.

Even though I had a lot of windshield time this week and lost productive hours I believe I made that up with my Noon appointment.  If I had not paid an on-site visit I would not have know they have a Canon color wide format close to the end of the lease (it was not working), I would have not know they are a huge user of BOX and I guess the icing on the cake I also found out that the account has additional print/copy/scan devices around the US. Thus one opportunity added for the wide format and many possible opportunities to come down the road.  Now I'm pretty sure I would not have found out all of that on a video call, I may have, but I'm going with being on-site and in person was a good thing.

Eleven selling days left and things are shaping up.

COVID19 Remote Working Day Two Hundred and Ninety Days of Selling

COVID19 Remote Working Day Two Hundred and Ninety Days of Selling Copiers, Managed IT & Content

Just now I realized that it's been seven business days since I last blogged with this blog series.  I believe that's the longest stint I've logged without blogging since the pandemic started.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this in previous blogs but I've been able to survive the entire pandemic without the use of home office printer/scanner.  At first it was rather cumbersome since my entire order workflow in the past was based printing and scanning order entry docs and forms.  The first couple of months was an absolute pain in my ass with not having a printer/scanner.  However I persevered and found ways to develop a digital workflow for unsigned order docs, signed order docs and all of those pain the butt forms we all use.  In addition I found shortcuts with my pdf software that would allow me to add and redact text on forms quicker than before the pandemic.

Today was the day that I had to print a document and my first document of the pandemic.  Thus today was the first day in months that I made a plan to work from the office in Edison, NJ.  Traffic was somewhat heavier than what I've grown accustom to in the past few months.  Arriving at our industrial park I also noticed that there's definitely an increase in amount of parked cars.

I believe I may be getting to the end of the road with this blog series.

NJ

Over the past three weeks infections are way down. Amount of New Jerseyans that are fully vaccinated is over three million now.  Our Governor has relaxed a little and has opened bars (with six feet of distancing still) and if you're not eating or drinking you still need to wear a mask (wtf). In addition outdoor gathering time lines have moved up and he is allowing larger groups.  I heard from someone that he will not relax the mask mandates, the social distancing and Health Emergency Order until the seventy percent of the NJ population is vaccinated.  May 17th is the timeline for the next extension.

You can now get a walk up vaccinated however the fever of peeps getting vaccinated has slowed.  Slowed so much that our Governor instituted a beer & shot spiff for everyone that shows a full vaccination card at participating establishments. Has the entire world gone mad?

Last Seven Days

It's no secret that I'm in somewhat of a sales slump for the past six weeks.  However this week seems to be a breakout since I'll have 13 or so appointments with most of them being on-site.  I think it was Tuesday when I added three opportunities in the span of a couple hours.  Two were for A3 color devices and one was for a wide format toner based color MFP.  Having that happen in the span of a couple of hours can really give you some pop for the rest of the day.

Up until yesterday I had lost more opportunities than sales. I lost two and one was with a net new (I think they just went cheap and I wasn't giving anything away), the other was an existing client that stated it was not me nor my company but just thought they had an offer they could not refuse.  Thus I posed the question (via email because that's how I was informed), "understood so if everything was so perfect why not give us a chance to come close or match?".  They say silence is golden, however in this case the silence told me that maybe there was a falsehood?  In any event that thought of a price they couldn't refuse usually blows up on them somewhere down the road.

As of today I made those two losses go away with two signed orders. Yesterday I had a verbal for a $25K deal, however I'm still waiting to see if we get the approval. You just can't count deals as sold unless you have the docs and sometimes until the deal is delivered.

I've also got a handful of accounts that are at the end of their leases and I can't seem to make them move.  Sometimes it's more about their timeline than mine. In addition I still have the $64K opportunity with an existing client that's gone in the weeds for a few weeks now.

With 12 selling days left in the month there is some light peeking threw the tunnel but it's going to take it's time.

Tomorrow

Get this an appointment with an account that I lost to five years ago!  Keeping in touch with accounts that you did not sell is just as important as all of the other accounts.  What comes around goes around. Later in the day I have an appointment with an existing client to upgrade an A3 MFP which I hope I can at least get the verbal tomorrow.  That would be an $11K pop.

The struggle still remains for many us in states that are not fully open. I can only hope that all of this ends soon and the economy goes on the rebound for a Roaring Twenties.  What goes around comes around.
