Jail Break and I'm Out of Cardiac Jail

Actually I've been waiting to get out of Cardiac Jail for the last thirty days!

I was finally sprung mid-afternoon on Friday the 8th and I decided to take a couple of days from posting anything on the Print4Pay Hotel and social media for the weekend.

After my first stent (3) procedure it's been more about just trying to pace with work and all of the changes in my life. Yes, things had to change and it was more about how I had to change.  During those days there wasn't much I could do rather then sending and answering emails along with a few phone calls.

Make of those calls in the first days was though and I was doubting my ability due to my loss of words and train of thought. I was promised by my Neurologist that as time passed I would get back to my excellent communication ways in 5-12 months. It's now 2 weeks short of two months and I feel I'm getting mentally stronger each day.

My VP

In the beginning I had some time with my VP of Sales (Tim) and I enjoy what we've developed over the years.  It will be sad for the one day when I finally decide to pack in the retirement watch one day .

In the early days of my stroke I had a chat with Tim about my Neurologist about what I've lost mentally. It was more about a game of word association like "name five types of fish", then "give me five movies you've recently watched". There is no doubt was pretty poor at the start of the game. In fact,  I was maybe naming one of the five for each category and that stated to worry me.

My second track with the Neurologist was centered around work.  What I remember and what I don't remember and not remembering is the toughest part when you're not being asked questions.  However I asked the "Dr" can you ask me these questions about work.  We centered on sales and prospecting to start. First question up was asking me about my sales job and believe it or not everything was perfect!  I had no loss of memory for anything related to work and my sales job. Whew, that made be feel so much better

The next question asked me to tell me 5 things about prospecting...........such a crucial part of my job it is. I tracked a zero for answering any questions about prospecting, in fact my wife (she was there also) gave me a hint and tried jogging me with a cell call to kick start the prospecting.

That hint failed also, and it's obvious that I had a problem larger that I thought.  I had forgotten how to prospect even on the phone! My on my, forty plus years of prospecting out the door!  After a couple of hours we finally finished with my Dr.  as he supplied me with a note for Tim my VP of Sales.

"Please excuse Art from all activities of prospect and especially by the phone,  because has lost the ability to recall any level of prospecting".

Now that's a good one and yes that's a joke that I spoke about in the early days, there was no note and Tim was a great sport about my shenanigans.

Prospecting

There are days when I can go ten rounds when sparring with a verbal chat and there are other days when I'm lucky if I can go one.

I am lucky because I can see that I am getting better and that helps the process.

The Future

I'm not sure where my future lies right now. Three months ago I would have stated I'd be doing this for another 20 years.  I know that I still love what I do and don't plan to stop it, however time and GODS will may take me down other paths.

I do need to thank my wife again and again for all of her support and he love.

Compassion For Your Clients Comes From The Heart And Cannot Be Faked.

"Let our hearts be stretched out in compassion toward others, for everyone is walking his or her own difficult path.”
Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Let's face it, we've all lost a client for some reason or another.

Here's the mirror moment... How many of you truly understand the "why" behind why they left?

What healing message are you using with your clients? Are they feeling alone and abandoned by you?

Your clients are undeniably one of the most precious assets you have.

Without clients would you exist in sales?

The more you understand that deep meaningful and credible relationships with your client's matter, the more successful you will become as a sales professional.

Your clients smell what you're cooking fast

Are you personally engaging with your clients?

Are you authentically investing in building meaningful relationships?

Are you showing that you care?

COMPASSION AND CONNECTION

If you want to achieve sales proficiency, it can't just be about you. It must be about something bigger than you.

How well are you connecting with your clients? Think about this question for a moment... Now think about your clients... I believe there is some work to be done.

Heartfelt professionals are driven by a mission to make the business world better and help others.

"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive."
Dali Lama

If love and compassion are necessities within humanity, then what prevents salespeople and their leaders in bringing this to their clients?

Compassion can be distinguished by strong feelings of unconditional love, genuine sympathy and a strong willingness to help others.

My question to all those in sales... Why can't we bring this to our client relationships? I believe this would put you in a better place with your clients.

Compassionate selling is the call for changing times within the business community

COMPASSION CHANGES EVERYTHING

To come out ahead on the other side of this crisis, think about leading yourself and your clients with compassion.

Merriam Webster defines compassion as,

"Sympathetic consciousness of other's distress together with a desire to resolve it."

Compassion comes from the Latin word “compati,” which means “to suffer with.” It is more than empathy and care, it is the sincere burning desire to help someone who is suffering, and to be able to help ease their pain.

What would happen if you brought compassion to your client relationships?

Think about all the distress your clients are going through.

Selling from the Heart professionals rise up and end the suffering inflicted by all the empty suits.

Bringing compassion to the forefront, it is not for the weak at heart. It is for those professionals who care. It's for those professionals who give a rip.

Compassion calls for salespeople to unite, take action and make change.

If you want to stand out from all the other empty suits and "me-too" sales reps, it can't just be about you. It must bigger than you.

"I think technology really increased human ability. But technology cannot produce compassion."
Dalai Lama

A Selling from the Heart professional is deeply driven by a mission to make the business world better, help others and bring compassion to their client relationships.

COMPASSION IN YOUR CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS

When was the last time you asked one of your client's their concerns, issues or even how you can help?

When was the last time you had a meaningful conversation that helped you understand why and how one of your clients was struggling?

Compassion is truly having genuine sympathy for the hardship or suffering other people might be experiencing, and a sincere desire to ease their pain.

Let's think about this in a sales context.

How many of you show a heartfelt desire to help ease the pain from all the broken promises left behind from all the other unscrupulous sales rats?

How many of you are committed to stopping the pain and suffering caused by all the broken sales promises?

A compassionate sales professional is motivated to take action and to stop the pain inflicted by empty suits.

We can all agree, there are many ways to show compassion; however, what is most important is that it must come from the heart.

A compassionate sales professional understands their clients crave to be part of something meaningful and special. They hold a deep concern for how their clients feel and what they’re getting out of working with them, especially the experience.

Bring compassion into your client relationships. Dig in and ask heartfelt questions.

  • What do you truly expect and desire from me?
  • What is one thing I can help you with right now?
  • What matters to you the most?
  • What can I do to better serve you?
Compassion and care over commission and deception

CONNECTING WITH COMPASSION CANNOT BE FAKED

Compassionate and heartfelt salespeople seek to influence, not take advantage of their clients. They encourage. They lead with hope. They guide, acknowledge and support their clients. They smash together their efforts, skills, talents, insights, passion, enthusiasm and commitment to work because they care.

Bringing compassion, caring and connectivity is jet fuel for building meaningful client relationships.

My friend Bruce Kirk, who is also a member of the Selling from the Heart Insiders Group: shares wonderful insight around compassion:

"Compassion must come from the heart---it cannot be faked. The other person's best interests and well-being must be of genuine concern (Serving Truth)."

"Compassion doesn't mean we avoid the truth. In many relationships, there are often hard truths that need to be said for the relationship to deepen. But truths shared with the wrong heart can be disastrous (Selfish Truth)."

Your success is not just about closing more deals, where you sit on the sales totem pole, or the size of your last commission check; it's about how well you connect, care and have sincere compassion for clients.

  • You must care intensely about your clients.
  • You must have compassion for your clients.
  • You must connect with meaning with your clients.

When you with lead with empathy, compassion and vulnerability, you erode the negative perception caused by all the empty suits

Some Days You're on Point & Other Days Everything is a Miss

Recently I've been back to prospecting, yes I'm the 64 year old dude that still wants to prospect.

Last 4 Days

In the last 4 days I lost 2 net new accounts because I missed the mark with offering the client additional device options. Mind you,  the prospect I met with had no reason for an A3 color device. Our A4 color would have met their needs for years.  The prospect never asked if there was a larger color MFP. In fact the prospect was adamant about the finances that were available.  Thus where I thought I was helping the client with one quote for one device I hurt my chances by not including a second quote for an A3 color MFP. Apparently someone produced an offer for an A3 color MFP that kicked my butt.

I  still need to  remember to offer the client multiple devices and let the client choose. I'm usually in the camp for offering multiple devices but in this case I made the mistake and lost the opportunity.

Family Account

Another account that I've been tracking for color production for the better part of 18 months got back to me a few days ago. Now this was an existing account for years, we were good with everything, never ever was there an issue.  Out of the blue I was emailed that the client pulled the trigger on another brand. Yes I was floored but not surprised.

Now with this account there is nothing I would have ever changed about the models we mentioned, along with our chats and pricing.  I have yet to figure out why I lost.  But I'm sure when we follow up in the near future it will come out that the client bought from someone they knew that just hooked up with their new copier company. Over the years I can tell you that I've lost at least a dozen of those deals to those family reps.  Now x amount of years later none of those reps are still in the industry

Things Happen in Threes

I'm sure I'll have another opportunity that will pass in the next few days. It always seems to happen in threes an that's  okay for me because I'll end up make room for additional opportunities to fill the passes.

Prospecting

Prospecting today is more about prospecting my ways.  Over the years I've thrown enough crap on the wall to see what sticks. I've found that times that you call, apps that you use to reach out, along with certain days will produce more that the 30 year old phone blocks. Just like one of the reps that I worked with today, they found out this little bit of information about wrapped this info around the talk track and it produced appointments. Do not ever be afraid to try something new because you might land on something that works.

MY next 8 weeks is now about trying to find $180K in revenue. I'm over the hump for the year, but packing in another $180K during the world series year would put icing on the cake for a great career.

fast sales thought Be careful to minimize your efforts to say what you feel needs to be said in a sales call. The most important thing is that you learn what your prospects really want or need and why. The simplest way to do this is to forget about yourself, your company, your products, and your competition. Focus only on the discussion. Be real. Ask questions and listen. Care for them and they’ll more likely care for you. (use this link for a “be real” printable reminder)

Re: Good article on Document Solution Selling

Former Member ·
Thanks for the kind word about the article. The book "Selling is Dead" expresses the challenge our industry is going through as we move from just talking about solutions to ACTUALLY SELLING them. What did you like best about the article? I'd love to start a discussion thread on this.

There Is A Huge Gap Between A Sales Professional And Sales Amateur.

"Without professionalism I'd be an amateur, and the clients I want don't hire amateurs."
David Airey

There is no free ride to success. There is no easy button. There is no short-cut. Without hard work, dedication, and an extreme tolerance for frustration, you can never become a sales champion.

If you really want it, then you must be willing to back it up by taking massive action. I am concerned that far too many in sales lack a basic understanding of what’s necessary to become a sales professional.

Are you putting in the hard work?

You must be willing to get off of the comfy couch. You must get outside of your physical, mental and emotional comfort zones. You must be willing to push the envelope, to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Success is simple yet difficult. I get it every once in a while, you'll work your butts off.

Occasionally, you will get motivated to step the pace up and sweat just a little bit more especially when your sales funnel is running on empty.

Unfortunately, many in sales are consistently inconsistent and will turn their head and mentally say, "No thank you, I'm comfortable just where I am at."

"Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come."
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

What do you think separates a sales professional from the rest of the pack? Do they have more talent? Not necessarily! Are they more gifted than others? On some occasions, yes. Do they want and smell sales success more than you? Do they practice, plan and prepare more than others?

You see, the very successful professionals work harder, and on a more consistent basis; because they want it more than you do. Their inner drive propels them.

If you truly desire to become a sales professional, then your biggest obstacle is the very person you see when you look in the mirror!

If you want it badly enough and are willing to go after it on a daily basis, week in and week out, month in and month out; then you must buckle-down by elevating your training and performance.

"Without hard work and discipline it is difficult to be a top professional"
Jahangir Kahn

A PROFESSIONAL AND AN AMATEUR

The differences between a professional and an amateur is the variance in their thought process, behavior, attitude and approach towards sales.

As noted by Oxford languages...

A professional is defined as:

  • Relating to or belonging to a profession.
  • Worthy of or appropriate for a profession, competent or skillful.

Let's look at amateur as defined by Merriam-Webster...

  • One who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession
  • One lacking in experience and competence in an art or science

Curious... Did you notice how the word competence was used? Allow the word to sink in for just a moment.

The only way to become better at sales is to spend time working on it.

But, how can you become a sales professional if you’re not consistent enough?

"The difference between an amateur and a professional is in their habits. An amateur has amateur habits. A professional has professional habits. We can never free ourselves from habit. But we can replace bad habits with good ones.”
Steven Pressfield

Could the difference between a sales professional and a sales amateur lie within their habits and mindset?

I believe sales professionals have developed habits, routines and rhythms that guide them to stay at the top.

Sales professionals are called professionals for a reason, are you willing to do the work?

LET'S PEEL THIS BACK SOME MORE...

Allow this quote to sink in for a moment...

"I have nothing in common with lazy people who blame others for their lack of success. Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses."
Kobe Bryant

Do you have what it takes to take your career to the next level?

Are you willing to put in the work to become a sales professional?

ARE YOU COMMITTED?

Sales amateurs believe knowledge is power. Sales professionals pass on their wisdom and advice to their clients.

Sales amateurs see feedback and coaching as criticizing. Sales professionals know they have weaknesses and crave feedback and coaching.

Sales amateurs focus on the short term. Sales professionals focus on the long term.

Sales amateurs blame others, point fingers and makes excuses. Sales professionals accept responsibility and hold themselves personally accountable.

Sales amateurs stall after failure or lost deals. Sales professionals grow after failure.

Sales amateurs strive to achieve. Sales professionals strive for continuous growth.

Sales amateurs cave when faced with adversity and tough challenges. Sales professionals lean into adversity and challenges.

ARE YOU PUTTING IN THE WORK?

If you fail to put in the work, you will never find true success.

You’ve heard about Malcolm Gladwell and his 10,000-hour rule. He studied and discovered the most successful people are the ones who have put in the hard work. They dive into their craft and study. And they worked and worked some more.

You can’t expect success to come to you just because you want it to. You must be willing to work hard.

You must adjust your mindset. Every morning, look in the mirror in and say to yourself, I'm a sales professional.

Moving from a sales amateur to a sales professional requires:

  • A commitment to yourself
  • A commitment to a stronger work ethic
  • A commitment to a plan

How many of you are willing to double-down on yourself?

How many of you will do the things necessary to change the course of your sales career?

Will you commit to doing the work, or dodge it and remain in that sales amateur mindset?

  • Becoming better is simply, better.
  • Progressing is simply, progress.
  • Potential is simply, potential.
“The amateur plays part-time. The professional plays full-time”.
Steven Pressfield

One of the items I do with Linkedin on most days is to find an interesting thread from another person/company. Once I find that thread I then read the thread an not just the headline.  My goal is to share that thread with my peep but to also insert a comment in the share that makes the share my own twist on what was posted.

I had an email last night from a P4p'er that wanted to know my thoughts about this acquisition by KonicaMinolta. I took a visit to the Officeware web site and was surprised with the MPS tone and strategy of the site, but as I dug a little deeper I realized that the copier dealer message was still embedded in the web site. In a blog I posted at the end of 2010, I had predicted that copier manufacturers like Xerox, Ricoh and KonicaMinolta would start to buy MPS organizations. Officeware seems to

Hello, we recently upgraded an account that had LD445C and now we put in MP4504 and they are complaining that their old copiers kept the last destination when you were scanning to either a folder or a FTP site. Is there a setting that we are missing or something that we can change to make this happen on the new system? We do not want to use batch or sadf mode as they put all of the documents in as one file and they need each scan to be different files. Help in this would be greatly appreciated.
