People think continued technological advancements are turning the world fully digital. Since as early as the 1970s, humans have speculated that the future would be completely paperless. The idea seems to be founded on the thought that computers made it easier to think and process information, eventually making printed documents outdated.
Even Stanley Kubrick’s classic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey showed the future and space travel as a paperless future. A 2001 newspaper was merely something to be viewed digitally on a television screen.
But rather than a sudden or even steady switch to a completely digital world, 1980 through 2000 saw paper use increase. In 2017, over four hundred million metric tons of paper were used by business offices alone. Experts predict paper use worldwide will continue to remain high for the foreseeable future – reaching around four hundred and seventy-six million tons by 2032.
While paper remains a key resource, the growth of digital has not lagged. US adults currently average over thirteen hours of digital media consumption per day. Those interactions include emails and social media as well as the PDFs, presentations, and other items regularly viewed throughout the workday. And businesses attempting to leverage digital communications have to compete with the growing clutter and digital fatigue.
Oddly enough, those brochures, direct mail pieces, and presentations that used to get tossed out with the rest of the junk mail have become a novelty. And providing printed references might just be the differentiator a business needs to break through the digital noise.
When it comes to making an impression, print is the best option. Over three-quarters (88%) of Millennials believe the information in printed text is more official than anything provided digitally. But trustworthiness is not the only advantage print materials provide.
Studies show humans read printed items seventy to eighty percent faster than digital materials. They also retain more of the information because complicated information that requires more concentration is followed better when it is presented in a printed format. Part of this phenomenon is due to a lower level of stress as reading printed items has been shown to reduce overall stress by sixty-eight percent.
This level of reduced stress, better understanding, and faster perusal is a win for sales and marketing teams. It is especially beneficial for businesses with products and services that are more complicated and require additional information.
Businesses want their targeted audiences to have their brand, products, and services top-of-mind. But that might be hard when companies are competing for keyword share with competitors in the market. And it’s not just keywords for which businesses must compete now, it’s screen time and share of attention.
When it comes to keeping brand names at the forefront, nothing can compete with printed materials. Seventy-five percent of consumers have been proven to remember brand names better if they have seen them on a printed document.
And, when it comes to making sure prospects understand what makes a company a better choice than the competition, there is nothing quite like printed brochures, flyers, and presentations. Prospects can process printed text 60,000 times faster than digital. Even better, complete understanding takes twenty-one percent less cognitive effort. The result is faster, better communication that sticks.
The digital realm seems more dynamic. There are certainly more options for delivery, including video, interactive software, email, and chat. But most of these digital formats are mentally processed in the same way.
By triggering more sensory input, printed materials provide more engagement than anything standard digital can provide. While the digital space leverages sight and sound to its fullest, print leverages something called the textual landscape.
The brain sees and processes words and letters as physical objects. Coupled with the action of turning the pages of a book, brochure, or presentation, the brain registers the materials as taking another step down a walking trail. It then maps the information it absorbs more fully in the mind, bundling additional neurons that increase recall, understanding, and longevity.
While digital delivery may be faster and more convenient, sales and marketing teams that leverage the truly interactive process triggered through printed materials gain an unexpected edge.
While digital advertising and sales materials may be a growing and essential trend, paperless interactions end up making the marketing and sales processes more difficult. Business offices with active sales and marketing teams need a way to provide printed documentation and reliable printers to support their efforts.
Printers help sales representatives give prospects and current clients a better way to differentiate and promote brand, products, and services, through printed brochures, flyers, and presentations. These printed materials help sales and marketing create better, more robust, and more memorable interactions that help build customer base and increase sales for the business.
One of the best ways to ensure reliable, cost-effective printer access is to partner with a managed print services provider. These businesses use their expertise to provide the right equipment, supplies, maintenance, and service to keep the business’s sales and marketing departments running smoothly. With the right printers and materials, the business will be able to create everything needed to provide unique communications that capture attention and keep the brand top-of-mind.

It was late in 2007 that I had our first taste of the Great Recession. The housing bubble burst and I was one of many copier sales people that were affected by professionals and businesses going belly up. One day they were there and the next day they weren't, at one time the leases were paid on schedule and the next month many stated there was no income to be had. Many think the Great Recession was from 2007 to 2009, however with my feet in the trenches living that horrid dream it was more like 2007 to 2011.
Every Recession Will Spawn New Technology
I'm not sure what year it was but I do remember attending an industry event in Park City, Utah. One speaker spoke about how every recession will spawn new technology that will change every business. When the going gets tough companies will launch new technologies that are designed to lower companies costs. I believe the message to us is that our industry could lose up to 10% of our revenue because of new technology in the next recession.
It's my firm belief that 2007-2011 was the start of our reduction of clicks for our industry due to technology advancements and rapid advancement of digital solutions and habits with a younger workforce.
Yes, there were some good years after 2011, even though the revenue from gross sales from the hardware got better and better. But the eroding of clicks was still there. It was more a slow demise over the next eight years.
How can we forget? Covid19 was the triple whammy for our industry.
First of all because workers were not in the office, printing in major market areas fell hard and fast. New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and other major markets had no one in the office. Thus no one was printing/copying or scanning which equals no clicks.
Second of all business owners and workers adapted, they quickly learned how to get their work down without printing pages (even old guys like me had to adapt or die). Many companies adopted technologies like DocuSign, Capture Software and Document Management Software.
Third of all Covid19 spawned the recession, not as bad as the Great Recession because Governments printed absurd amounts of cash to avoid a catastrophic financial crash. Thus technology developed over those COVID years of 2020, 2021 and 2020 further reduced the volume of printed pages in the modern office.
There's been some small gains in recent months with print because many of the major market areas are trying to get people back to work. Bad habits are hard to break and that's helped our industry somewhat. From what I've read the overall percentage drop of page volume is 25-35% from 2019. For those off us in secondary and rural markets many dealers claim that the drop is much lower than the major markets and that estimate is 10%-15%.
I've read that the supply chain might never go back to where it was in 2019. There's just too many variables in play with lingering COVID zero tolerance in China. Threatened rail strikes here in the US and the recent revolt of the Chinese people because of Covid lock downs can threaten the fragile supply chain yet again.
When was the last time we really factored in the cost for a sheet of paper? Cut sheet paper costs have been rising, thus the question becomes when will the cost for paper be higher than the cost per page? A quick review at Amazon puts the cost per page for standard letter paper at the cost of penny per page. Thus what happens when the cost per page rises to 2 cents per page or more?
Those of us in the industry today are possibly the last generation that will sell a digital copier. If you're the young of of 30, then by the time you're 50 copiers will have gone the way of the typewriter.
As I write this I also realize that businesses that offer print can still be profitable with the existing clicks. Of course with clicks eroding, the cost of producing prints will continue to go higher every year. It might be fair to say that low volume prints could start at 2 cents and rise to 3 cents per page in the next couple of years (office print). This might offset some of the losses with declining print volumes.
Will our industry die?
Nope, there is no chance of that happening. Our industry's core is technology. As users during COVID learned to adapt with not printing, our industry has already adapted to offering new technologies and services and we'll continue to evolve as events change the course of print.
In 2043 what's the next break and fix with planned obsolescence?

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
John F. Kennedy
As we begin our time together, please reread the opening quote, and as you're thinking about the quote, think about this word... congruency.
When it comes to gratitude, does the walk match the talk?
Reread the quote again, and now think about your clients.... When is the last time you truly and I mean truly complimented, sincerely thanked, and shared deep gratitude towards your clients for doing business with you?
And no, I do not mean just around the holiday season.
Now is the time to bring back compliments.
Now is the time to bring back appreciation.
Now is the time to dig in and have meaningful conversation.
Now is the time to show gratitude.
When it comes to describing gratitude, the Harvard Medical School provides more detail, writing that gratitude is:
“A thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives … As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals–whether to other people, nature, or a higher power”.
In a world full of technology, way too many of you are hiding behind your keyboards to communicate with your clients.
When was the last time you had a heartfelt and open conversation with one of your clients?
We live inside an extremely chaotic and digitally driven business world, however; I promise all of you this...
Your clients are starving for attention. They're starving for affection. They're starving for real human and heartfelt conversation.
We all have choices. I'm a firm believer that you are 100% responsible for how you show up.
How are you showing up for clients?
How are you showing up for your friends, family and even the company you work for?
Are you proactively leading your life with gratitude or reacting with gratitude? Stop for a moment and think about what I just said.
When you choose to plant the gratitude seed into your life, you are choosing to proactively commit to improving your health and well-being.
A study from the University of California Berkeley states,
“Research suggests that gratitude may be associated with many benefits for individuals, including better physical and psychological health, increased happiness and life satisfaction, decreased materialism, and more.”
The study went on to state that,
"Gratitude is also important to forming and maintaining social relationships. When you engage with someone and express gratitude for them, they are in turn more likely to express gratitude in return."
Are you starting to think about your clients in a different way?
Where would you be in sales without any clients?
Therefore, gratitude is the expression of appreciation for what one has. And in your case, this would be your clients. It is a recognition of value free from any monetary worth.
Being grateful is spontaneously generated from within, it is an affirmation of goodness and warmth.
Again, we all have choices. When it comes to your clients and your relationship with them, expressing gratitude builds relational strength.
Expressing gratitude shows you care. Here at Selling from the Heart, we refer to this as giving a rip.
Expressing gratitude reciprocates the kindness shared and felt in your relationship.
Expressing gratitude celebrates the positive in your relationship, bringing the both of you closer together.
Gratitude deepens connection.
Your attitude is always within your control, make it a grateful one.
“When gratitude becomes an essential foundation in our lives, miracles start to appear everywhere.”
Emmanuel Dagher
Imagine the impact gratitude can have on your client relationships and your sales revenue?
Right now, some of you might be saying, “Larry, come on man. Get real... this fluffy stuff... how can it drive hard dollars?"
Well, I ask you to think about your clients... what would you do and how would you act, if they decided to take their business elsewhere? How would you feel? How would this impact your thoughts, your actions and your sales results?
Soft skills yield hard dollars
Giving compliments from the heart, with sincerity and gratitude will strengthen the relationships with your clients.
Can gratitude close the relational gap with your clients? I believe it can.
Communication is the at the core. It becomes the key driver to gain and become connected to your clients for a long time.
I would like all of you to reflect upon these questions...
"Do not let arrogance go to your head and despair to your heart; do not let compliments go to your head and criticisms to your heart; do not let success go to your head and failure to your heart.”
Roy T. Bennett
Some of the very best people I know, have a healthy appreciation and an abundance of gratitude.
They practice gratitude daily. They communicate it daily. They live a thankful lifestyle.
Hang around me long enough and you will hear me drop a quote from Don Barden and his book, "The Perfect Plan".
The elite 1% lead themselves as servants. They know the answers to these three questions before they ever make a presentation to a client or those they lead...
"If I am to serve this person, will it be right for them personally, professionally, and in their spirit?"
Don goes onto say,
"If so, then and only then will I present myself to them with an attitude of gratitude, real education, and ease of doing business, because that is what servants do."
What is your attitude towards gratitude?
Whether you are a sales leader or a quota carrying salesperson... You must express gratitude to your clients because they have other choices. There is always someone out there trying to earn their attention and their business.
Are you grateful each time they choose you versus someone else? Do your clients know it?
Don't expect their business because you're not entitled to it. You must keep showing value and renewing their interest in you.
There is a crap-ton of competition out there. Your clients have choices.
You can’t afford to take for granted your clients. Show them love, do something special, tell them you appreciate that they chose you and then work your ass off to earn their loyalty.
A proactive approach to gratitude opens the referral door and drives sales growth.
Here is how this plays out... start with your top 10 clients, find 6 people inside of these accounts (key decision makers and influencers), this gives you 60 people to proactively show your gratitude towards.
The conversation goes something like this...
"(Insert name), this past year I appreciate the opportunity you have given me to serve you. This means a lot and I am so grateful to you and your company. In thinking about your circle of friends and associates, would you be open-minded to bridging an introduction to 2 or 3 of them. Just looking to have a conversation to share some ideas and insight, would this be alright?"
This will surely test your relational strength.
Let's just say your average sale is $30,000. From these asks you receive two names and introductions; this equates to 120 people (60 people inside your top 10 accounts x 2 names). For this example, we will use 25% - win ratio. In other words, 25% of these referrals lead to a sale.
Folks, this is 30 sales at an average of $30,000 and you have just increased your sales revenue by $900,000!
What would this mean to you, your career and your family?
I'm here to inform you... people crave a genuine, authentic, real-deal and selling from the heart professional. I encourage all of you to lead a sales life full of authenticity and integrity rather than the pursuit of lining your sales wallet.
Showing your emotion isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign of strength. It builds memorable bonds that transcend your business relationships.
I encourage all you, don't sit on your feelings. Take action. Gratitude felt but not expressed stunts relational growth with your clients.
Allow me to leave you all with this...
How much, in quantifiable numbers, remaining in a status quo mindset will cost you in your sales growth?
Would you like to increase your sales success and fulfillment?
This was my goal when recording all-new materials for the new Selling from the Heart Masterclass, to increasing your sales success and fulfillment in your business.
